Oculus Rift Will Get Xbox One Game Streaming Support on December 12

Oculus Rift Will Get Xbox One Game Streaming Support on December 12

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Xbox One Streaming to Oculus Rift app available December 12
  • While Rift works on Windows 7 and above, the app is for Windows 10 only
  • Titles include Forza Horizon 3 and Gears of War 4

Microsoft has announced that you will soon be able to stream Xbox One games from your console to Oculus Rift on Windows 10 PCs with the help of a new app – Xbox One Streaming to Oculus Rift app.

“The new Xbox One Streaming to Oculus Rift app connects to your Xbox One via your home network,” Kevin Unangst, senior director of global marketing at Xbox, said in an official blog post. “Once connected, your console’s video output is streamed to your Rift headset and projected onto a massive screen in your choice of one of three immersive VR environments: ‘Citadel’, ‘Retreat’ and ‘Dome’.”

If you’re wondering what’s the need for “immersive VR environments”, that’s because your Xbox One games aren’t capable of naturally adapting to Rift’s 360-degree view. Project Scorpio, the confirmed 4K-and-high-end-VR upgrade to the Xbox One, isn’t out until fall 2017, so you’ll have to wait a bit to see if your Rift is supported by Project Scorpio, or Microsoft chooses to build its own native VR hardware. The latter approach would be a shift in how the company is approaching VR headsets for Windows 10, but then again the Xbox division has always built its own hardware.

While a full list of games isn’t available, Microsoft said that you’ll be able to stream the likes of Forza Horizon 3, Gears of War 4, Halo 5: Guardians, “biggest sports games”, “indie darlings”, and even some backward compatible Xbox 360 titles. Microsoft also wants potential Rift buyers to know that every Rift purchase comes with a free Xbox wireless controller – a nudge of sorts towards consumers to pick up an Xbox One S during the holidays if they are jumping onto the VR bandwagon – unlike the Oculus Touch controllers that cost $199 (about Rs. 13,600) on top of the Rift’s own $599 (about Rs. 41,000) price point. The Xbox One Streaming to Oculus Rift app will be available for free in the Oculus Store on December 12, Microsoft said, and more titles will be added in the coming year. Hopefully, someone at Microsoft can use the next two weeks to come up with a better name for the app.

Forza Horizon 3 Demo Now Available on Windows 10; HDR Support for Xbox One Demo Added
HIGHLIGHTS
Demo requires 21GB of disk space to install
HDR support for demo on Xbox One S added
Game can be downloaded from Windows Store
Beta and demo versions of most games are released well ahead of their full release in order to build the hype around the launch of the game and let the players test their machines with the game’s requirements. The latter reason has become increasingly important as the games have become more demanding than ever. Disregarding the usual trend, Microsoft has now released a demo version of its racing game Forza Horizon 3 on Windows, more than a month after its official release.
Forza Horizon 3 has been received extremely well by the critics since its release and in our review of the game, we specifically pointed out the brilliant visuals and the wide range of the car roster available in the game. The demo version of the game on Xbox One was made available ahead of its official release but for some reason, Microsoft decided to hold back the PC version up until now.

(Also Read: Forza Horizon 3 Review)
The demo for the off-road racing game by Microsoft Studios can be downloaded from Windows Store here. The demo version of the game requires disk space of around 21GB.
It should be noted that even the minimum requirements necessary to play the game are demanding than some of the other titles on PC. As per the game’s listing, your setup requires at least 8GB of RAM and an equally or more capable processor than 3.4GHz i5 3570. In terms of graphic cards, your setup should have a graphic card equally or more capable than NVIDIA GTX 750 Ti or AMD R7 250X.

Apart from releasing the demo version of the Forza Horizon 3 for PC, the company has also introduced HDR support – which has been present on the full game from day one – to the Xbox One demo version of the game, meant for players on the Xbox One S and those using an HDR display.

Forza Horizon 3 received 9 out of a possible 10 rating in our review and we termed it as “vastly improved and polished instalment in the Forza Horizon series.” Given that the PC version also supports resolutions up to 4K, it might be the best time to check if your system is ready for this monster of a game before spending your hard earned money on it.

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare Now Available Worldwide for Windows, PS4, and Xbox One

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare Now Available Worldwide for Windows, PS4, and Xbox OneCall of Duty: Infinite Warfare Now Available Worldwide for Windows, PS4, and Xbox One
HIGHLIGHTS
Game available in retail stores as well as for digital download
Available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One
Gameplay trailer received flak on YouTube
Call of Duty is one of those game franchises that churns out annual editions of its game but still captivates the interest of video-game enthusiasts around the world with its releases. Now, the series has come up with its latest entry – Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, which is now available for retail worldwide in stores as well as digitally.

(Also See: Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare Review)

The game has been released on Windows PC, PS4, and Xbox One. In terms of storage size, users will need between 44.6GB to 53.6GB of free on the PS4 to install the game while on the Xbox One, they’ll need 52.1GB of free space to install Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare. A day one patch to fix stability issues is out as well, weighing in at roughly 6GB. Though there were no perceptible changes on the PS4 version we played.
In our review of the game, we found the single-player campaign to be “entertaining enough to keep well worn gameplay mechanics from getting stale,” while we found that the multiplayer component of the game and its monetisation model to be glaring points of concern.

If you purchase the Legacy, Legacy Pro or Digital Deluxe Edition you will also receive a copy of remastered version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.
“We began three years ago with the goal to push ourselves in an all-new direction and take players to places they’ve never been before. In Infinite Warfare, we’re telling a classic war story of good vs. evil, and adding an epic backdrop that lets us introduce a ton of innovative gameplay,” Studio Head of game’s developer Infinity Ward Dave Stohl was quoted as saying in company’s release.
Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare might prove to be one of the most crucial entries for the game series in recent times, as the Activision franchise has been facing serious competition from Battlefield One, the latest instalment of the rival game franchise from EA. The war, in figurative terms, between the latest entries from both franchises started right from the time when gameplay trailers for both games came out. The Infinite Warfare trailer received highly negative feedback from fans as it was downvoted in huge numbers on YouTube.

Contrastingly, Battlefield One created a positive buzz for its gameplay and was upvoted in large numbers. As the two franchises have been facing-off against each other for a long time, comparisons were drawn almost immediately. However, the game should not be discarded as we have earlier pointed out that single-player campaign shows promise with space combat, elements of exploration, and some interesting set-pieces.

“Infinite Warfare is hands-down the best story campaign we’ve had in years and is a leap forward in the fluid, fast-paced action that Call of Duty fans know and love,” CEO of Activision Eric Hirshberg was quoted as saying in company’s release.

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare game has been available for pre-order in India since September and can be bought from websites like Amazon and Flipkart as well.

You can check out the PC system requirements for Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare over here.

With Xbox Scorpio, Microsoft Does Not Want to Turn Consoles into the Graphics Card Market

With Xbox Scorpio, Microsoft Does Not Want to Turn Consoles into the Graphics Card Market

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Phil Spencer claims that Xbox Scorpio will not see an immediate successor
  • He does not want the console market to emulate the PC space
  • Xbox Scorpio is out in the holiday season of 2017

With the PS4 Pro hitting the shelves in less than 10 days, the age of iterative consoles, whether we like it or not, begins. And while Sony has kept its cards close to its chest on what to expect next, Xbox boss Phil Spencer says that you won’t see a successor to Xbox Scorpio – it’s souped up Xbox One due next year, any time soon.

“I don’t have this desire to every two years have a new console on the shelf”, he explained to Game Informer. “That’s not part of the console business model, and it doesn’t actually help us. The best customer I have is somebody who buys the original Xbox and just buys all the games. That’s the best customer for us in terms of the pure financials of it […]I’m not trying to turn consoles into the graphics card market.

(Also see:Xbox Scorpio Games to Run in Native 4K Resolution: Microsoft)

While it’s heartening to know that at least one console maker isn’t interested in turning the console space into something akin to the graphics card or smartphone markets with new models released frequently, Spencer claims he has no idea on what after Scorpio:

(Also see:Xbox Scorpio has an Obvious Power Advantage over PS4 Pro: Microsoft)

“To be completely honest, I don’t know what the next console is past Scorpio. We’re thinking about it. We’re looking at consumer trends and what the right performance spec and price would be, and [asking ourselves], ‘Can we hit something that has a meaningful performance characteristic that a gamer would care about?'”

Gears of War 4 to Get Special Edition Xbox One S Console

Gears of War 4 to Get Special Edition Xbox One S Console

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Gears of War 4 will get a special editon Xbox One S
  • It will sport the same design as the controller shown at E3 2016
  • Gears of War 4’s release date is October 11 this year

Gears of War 4 is possibly the biggest Xbox One and Windows 10 game this year what with Microsoft making it available to both via the Xbox Play Anywhere program for digital copies. However it seems that aside from having the option of buying the game on disc, Xbox One fans have something else to look forward to – a special edition console.

According to NeoGAF user ekim, who has a solid track record on Microsoft related leaks, you can expect a limited edition Xbox One S console for Gears of War 4.

“So you guys remember the Gears Of War Elite Controller that was announced at E3?,” he askedfollowing up with:

“If you like that design, you might like the Xbox One S GoW [Gears of War] Limited Edition. :)”

This should come as no surprise considering that previous entries in the series have received their own console variants. And while ekim has no concrete idea as to when it would be officially announced, hebelieves there’s a good chance it could be revealed in August.

An Xbox One S for Gears of War 4 is apt, what with the game’s studio head Rod Fergusson stating you can expect improved visuals and a more consistent frame rate on the Xbox One S over the Xbox One. And while Xbox boss Phil Spencer has flip flopped on this, multiple sources have confirmed that this is indeed the case.

Don’t expect Gears of War 4 to be in native 4K for Project Scorpio though. “We have to look at what the engine can do with the power that Scorpio has,” said Fergusson to Polygon. “Because we’re mastering at 4K, it’s not about assets or art. It’s about getting the milliseconds down in terms of getting the game to 4K at 60 or 30 [fps]depending on single-player or multiplayer.”

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Game of the Year Edition for PC, PS4, and Xbox One Confirmed

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Game of the Year Edition for PC, PS4, and Xbox One Confirmed

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Popular and critically acclaimed RPG The Witcher 3 will be re-released
  • This has been confirmed by developer CD Projekt RED
  • It should include all DLC, post-game content, and sport the same price

After a listing on the German age-ratings board USK revealed the existence of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt- Game of the Year Edition for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, developer CD Projekt RED has confirmed it is indeed in the works.

“The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was a gigantic effort for the entire studio, and both the team and me were amazed by the good reception of Geralt’s adventures. Since launch, we’ve released two expansions, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, which added a lot of new adventures to the already potent mix,”said Game director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz to Eurogamer.

(Also see: The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Review – Game of Thrones Meets Skyrim)

“With all the free DLC and updates the game received so far, including significant changes to the game’s interface and mechanics, many gamers have asked us if we’re working on some sort of a Game of the Year Edition. I’m happy to confirm – yes, plans are in motion to release such an edition. We’ll release more details, including the release date, in the future. In the meantime, I’d like to thank every fan of the game for their support – you’re really amazing!”

This should come as no surprise considering that the last two games in the trilogy received enhanced editions a year or so after release. While no price has been mentioned, we won’t be surprised to see it maintain the same Rs. 3,499 price on the PS4 and Xbox One and Rs. 1,499 on the PC – akin to what the base game launched at last year.

No release date has been either, although sources speaking to Eurogamer claim it will be out in August. Makes sense considering the September to November release window is filled to the brim with new games such as Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, FIFA 17, Gears of War 4, and Titfanfall 2.

Xbox Store Ultimate Game Sale Discounts Call of Duty, GTA 5, Red Dead Redemption, and More

Xbox Store Ultimate Game Sale Discounts Call of Duty, GTA 5, Red Dead Redemption, and More

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Xbox Store will have deep discounts on games from July 5 to July 11
  • This will include PC and Xbox 360 titles as well as Xbox One games
  • You can save between 40 to 60 percent and over 60 percent for some games

With the Steam Summer Sale over, Microsoft has decided to discount a ton of games for Windows 10 PC, Xbox One, and Xbox 360. Dubbed the Xbox Ultimate Game Sale, it takes place from July 5 to July 11.

“The Ultimate Game Sale features over 250 deals on Xbox One and Xbox 360 titles, and for the first time ever the sale will include discounts on Windows 10 games and special pricing for Xbox One consoles. Save up to 40 to 60 percent on Xbox games, with some titles at more than 60 percent off. If you’re an Xbox Live Gold member, you can save up to an additional 10 percent. Discounts are valid from 05 July through 11 July 2016,” writes Larry “Major Nelson” Hryb, Microsoft’s Director of Programming.

“There are also over 30 offers for all of the PC gamers out there, including deals on Quantum Break,Rise of the Tomb Raider, and Gears of War: Ultimate Edition,” his post continues.

Standout offers include last generation classic Red Dead Redemption at Rs. 524.65 (Rs. 374.75 if you have an Xbox Live Gold subscription). Well worth the price of admission considering a physical copy is hard to come by and the game will eventually be playable on the Xbox One via backwards compatibility.

x

On Microsoft’s current generation console, Grand Theft Auto V is Rs. 2,450 (Rs. 2,100 if you have an Xbox Live Gold subscription) instead of Rs. 3,500. Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 is Rs. 2,793 (Rs. 2,394 if you have an Xbox Live Gold subscription) rather than Rs. 3,990.

But one of the better deals seems to be for Wolfenstein: The New Order. It usually retails for an absurd Rs. 5,500 digitally. However the Ultimate Game Sale pegs it at Rs. 1,815. An Xbox Gold subscription drops it further to Rs. 1,375.

Although getting games cheap is always better for consumers, keep in mind that most Xbox One games are around a 30GB to 40GB download while games like Quantum Break and Halo 5 are in excess of 120GB and 80GB respectively. For some, with slow Internet speeds or small data caps, it could work out to be a whole lot more expensive than ordering a physical copy from websites like Amazon or walking down to a store and buying an Xbox One game on a disc.

Xbox Play Anwhere Restricted to E3 2016 Xbox One Games Only

Xbox Play Anwhere Restricted to E3 2016 Xbox One Games Only

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Every game in development at Microsoft will work on PC and Xbox One.
  • This is due to the company’s Xbox Play Anywhere program.
  • This includes Xbox mainstays like Halo.

Microsoft has confirmed that any game developed by its own studios going forward will work with itsXbox Play Anywhere program.

“Every new title published from Microsoft Studios will support Xbox Play Anywhere and will be easily accessible in the Windows Store,” a post from the company detailing its Windows 10 Anniversary Update plans reads.

What this means is, you can expect the next mainline entry in the Halo series to be on PC as well as the Xbox One. When Microsoft first entered console gaming back in 2001, it launched the original Xbox with Halo: Combat Evolved. Two years later, the game made it to PC and Mac OS X. Similar treatment was meted out for Halo 2, hitting the original Xbox in 2004 but only arriving on PC in 2007.

While the likes of Gears of War and Forza have already made the jump to PC, Halo is perceived as the biggest exclusive and one of the reasons to own Xbox hardware. It’s a massive indication that Microsoft is more interested in prioritising games over hardware.

x

Perhaps, it also falls in line with the thinking at Redmond, if those close to Microsoft are to be believed.

“What if Xbox just becomes software?” asked Windows insider Brad Sams a couple of months back, during a podcast. “If your system [a PC] meets the specs, your PC can be an Xbox. Don’t get me wrong Microsoft will still build a dedicated box. But eventually it becomes software.”

It also harks back to the words of irate ex-employees last month.

“First-party studios isn’t doing so well. Halo 5 is a big miss, versus projections. Minecraft is a big miss, versus projections. Compared to either one of those,” sources said to Kotaku UK,”Lionhead is practically a rounding error. But I think if your division is under-performing, you have to go to your boss with something on the altar.” Considering how Halo 5’s price dropped barely a week post-release it would appear that sales targets were missed on the latest entry in the sci-fi FPS series. However in the case of Minecraft it seems odd. This is because the game is selling around 50,000 units a day.

In the past, Microsoft has been quiet on downloads or any form of metrics related to the Windows Store, preferring to talk up the number of users on Windows 10 and Xbox. This could explain why and furthermore, shed light on this move. Nonetheless, the Windows 10 Anniversary Update is available from August 2 while Xbox Play Anywhere is out on September 13.

Update, July 6, 2016: Microsoft has updated its blog post to specify that the only Xbox One games from the company that you can play on a Windows 10 PC are those shown off at E3 2016.

“Every new title published from Microsoft Studios that we showed onstage at E3 this year will support Xbox Play Anywhere and will be easily accessible in the Windows Store,” the post now reads. Perhaps the company isn’t ready to give its biggest exclusive a wider audience? Only time will tell.
