Mumbai to Have 1,200 Wi-Fi Hotspots by May 2017: Fadnavis

  • Out of 1,200 hotspots, 500 will be operational in the first phase by this November
  • Fadnavis had encountered other issues related to Mumbai
  • This is a part of the Smart City plan by Indian government

As part of transforming Mumbai into a Smart City, the state government will provide as many as 1,200 Wi-Fi hotspots in the megapolis, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said Friday.

“We are making Mumbai a Wi-Fi city by May 2017 with 1,200 hotspots at important places,” Fadnavis said during a debate on issues related to urban development in the state Assembly.

This was another important step after the CCTV project towards making Mumbai a Smart City, he said.

Of the total of 1,200 hotspots, 500 will be operational in the first phase by November 2016, Fadnavis said.

Talking about other Mumbai-related issues, he said BMC (municipal corporation) will treat all the sewage water before it flows into the sea.

A project to generate electricity from the waste was being set up, Fadnavis said.

The Union Government had sanctioned affordable housing projects under which 1,01,701 houses would be constructed in the state. Centre had allocated Rs. 1,513 crores and the state Government Rs. 967 crores, Fadnavis said.

“We have taken a decision to allow cluster development (of residential buildings) in suburban areas too. We are waiting for impact assessment report,” he said.

Saying that his government had not spared anyone found guilty of corruption, Fadnavis said many corrective steps on waste management were taken after the Deonar (garbage) dumping ground fire incident in Mumbai.

Maharashtra had signed an MoU with HP for creating IT infrastructure in three Smart Cities, and was going to invest Rs. 1,800 crores for this, he said. Rs. 4,000 crores had been made available for the development works in 44 AMRUT cities, Fadnavis said.

BJP MLA from Mumbai Ashish Shelar sought a probe into the alleged grant of excess FSI to 24 IT parks in Mumbai during the Congress-NCP regime. Fadnavis promised an inquiry.

Shelar also claimed that Rs. 1,200 crores were collected in excess from residents of Mumbai towards the property tax.

Echoing many BlackBerry devotees, he says iPhones and Androids simply can’t suitwireless BlackBerry’s voice sound wiwireless, centralized notiwi-fication hub and physical keyboard. “i’d rather use my antique BlackBerry than a moderncellphone,” he said.

To outsiders, it’s an increasingly perverse way of life choice. in any case, BlackBerry Ltd. has devoted to updating the BB10 running gadget most effective via the quit of the year. It has no stated plans foranother BB10 phone and is accelerating a pivot to handsets jogging Google’s Android. Even President Barack Obama, who famously fought to preserve his BlackBerry despite protection objections from the secret provider, instructed Jimmy Fallon remaining week he in the end ditched his Berry earlier this 12 months (reportedly for a Samsung).

a few voices on Wall avenue would really like BlackBerry to transport on, as properly. Macquarie analyst Gus Papageorgiou, who is covered the Canadian agency on and stale because 2002, stated in can alsothat ditching hardware altogether would without a doubt assist the lowest line and cheer themarketplace. leader government Ofwirelesscer John Chen has said he will try this if he cannot make the handset unit wi-fitable by means of September.

He can likely expect renewed pressure while BlackBerry reviews income on Thursday. On common, 21 analysts surveyed by using Bloomberg assume the business enterprise to put up a lack of 7 cents and pull in $471 million in sales. BlackBerry reported just $2.2 billion in sales wi-fi financial yr, its lowestdisplaying on the grounds that 2006. The shares have fallen about 20 percent inside the ultimate 12 months.

on the give up of March, about 23 million humans around the sector were the usage of BlackBerrys, inclusive of the Priv Android telephone, in keeping with a agency wi-fiwiwireless. three times as manyhumans were using the handsets years earlier, but the endured loyalty is putting all of the same. Getting non-BlackBerry programs onto a BB10 smartphone requires endurance and some technical ability. palsand family regularly wi-fiwiwireless themselves adding BlackBerry Messenger to their roster of messaging apps to keep in contact with the few closingwireless BlackBerry customers of their life.

Kao, an IT representative who runs a cell software program startup in Ottawa, maintains the c084d04ddacadd4b971ae3d98fecfb2a hotspot of his BlackBerry on always to permit WeChat to feature on his Android. He refuses to message along with his wife and buddies thru some thing apart fromBlackBerry Messenger. he is currently the usage of a classic, an updated version of the legendaryBlackBerry formidable. Kim Kardashian has stated she buys antique BlackBerrys on eBay to make certain a consistent deliver.other participants of the tribe painstakingly follow on-line tutorials on work-arounds with a view to makepopular apps like Snapchat and Instagram work on BB10. The results are frequently glitchy, says Howard Mesharer, a 23-12 monthsvintage BlackBerry fan from Columbus, Ohio.

whilst Chen chose to make phones going for walks Android rather than BB10 closingwireless 12 months, it opened a rift within the BlackBerry network, consistent with Chris Parsons, editor in chief of, BlackBerry fandom’s principal amassing place. “It prompted a touch bit of chaosbecause they essentially made people make a preference at that point, are you a BlackBerry person or are you basically an Android user,” said Parsons, who is known as Bla1ze on-line.

One CrackBerry person, recognized best as Cobalt232, determined a manner to re-paintings Android’ssupply code, stripping out sure elements that prevent Android apps from working on BB10. he’s allowed the diehards to download apps from Google’s store that don’t in any other case paintings on BB10, Parsons said.

Mesharer, who works as a server at a eating place, used Cobalt’s hack so he may want to Snapchat with his friends, up till approximately a month in the past, while he ultimately caved and bought an LGtelephone going for walks Android.

“Why do you want to do so a good deal just to get an app that anyone can get in wireless seconds? you have to work for forty wiwireless mins to hold Snapchat,” he said. “No developer wants to increase for BlackBerry. it is over.”

Mesharer, who used the square-screened BlackBerry Passport earlier than he made the transfer, statedpeople occasionally mistook the smartphone for a Nintendo Gameboy. Ask him which BlackBerrys he isused over time and he launches right into a litany of names and numbers: “Curve 8520, Curve 8900, bold9900, formidable 9700, Curve 8320, Z10, conventional, Q10, Passport.”

Kao does the same. He got his wi-first one in 2003, while he landed his wi-first process out of college at IBM. He recalls being the envy of all his buddies. “It used to be a badge of honor if you want to bringBlackBerrys and now it’s nearly a disgrace,” he stated. “human beings take a look at it like it is a dinosaur, a museum piece.”

Dartmouth’s ‘Magic Wand’ Pairs Medical Devices to Wi-Fi

Dartmouth's 'Magic Wand' Pairs Medical Devices to Wi-Fi

Doctors could keep better tabs on their patients between visits with a simple wave of a magic wand-like device being developed at Dartmouth College.

The prototype, dubbed “Wanda,” is part of a multi-university project to develop ways to protect patient confidentiality as health care increasingly moves out of hospitals and doctors’ offices and into the home. But beyond safety, simplicity also is a key goal, said doctoral student Tim Pierson, Wanda’s creator.

“Quite frequently in the computer security business, we invent things that are super-secure but hard to use, and people don’t understand them,” he said. “We set out to make something that my parents and in-laws could use.”

Here’s how Wanda could work: A doctor sends a patient home with a Wi-Fi-enabled blood pressure cuff. Instead of having to type in a passcode to connect the monitor to a home Wi-Fi network, the patient just points the wand at the device.

Once that connection is made, blood pressure readings can be transmitted back to the doctor’s office.

“In a hospital you tend to have trained people who can configure medical devices, and set them up and monitor them to make sure they’re working,” Pierson said. “If we’re going to move into a world where sensors are outside of the hospital, we started wondering what are the challenges to configuring these devices in the home where there is no IT team, or in a small clinic with a couple of doctors and nurses?”

The prototype consists of a ruler with two antennas attached to it. It can acquire a network name and password by being plugged into a Wi-Fi router, and is then detached and pointed at the medical device to connect it to the network. The password information is converted into binary code – ones and zeroes – with one antenna transmitting information packets containing the “ones” and while the other sends the “zeroes.”

Because the medical device is close to the wand, it can tell which packet came from which antenna based on the signal strength and can reconstruct the information. But a hacker farther away couldn’t tell the difference.

“One of the good things about this system is that the user doesn’t even have to know that information. The wand can get it from your Wi-Fi router and impart it on the device,” he said. “We talked to a lot of people who have Wi-Fi in their homes and have no idea what their password is.”

Researchers elsewhere have tried similar approaches using sound to transmit a secret key that allows devices to be paired, or accelerometers that pair devices if they are shaken, said Pierson. One drawback of those approaches is that they require some kind of extra sensor or equipment to be included in the medical device.

Pierson’s project is part a $10-million, five-year grant from the National Science Foundation to Dartmouth, Johns Hopkins University, the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, the University of Michigan and Vanderbilt University.
