Specifically, 55 percent of U.S.-based small businesses (59 percent, including all the various countries that participated in the research) don’t have a website, according to a GoDaddy-commissioned global survey.

That percentage stands to shrink, however, as 55 percent of these small businesses voiced an intent to launch an online presence for their small business within two years.

Of the small business owners that have a website up and running, 83 percent believe that they have a competitive advantage over those without an online presence.

Key perceived obstacles for companies that have not yet launched a website have to do with company size, as well as the expense and technical expertise believed to be related to the creation of  the website.

“Some said they believed they were too small for the Web, either in terms of employees or revenue,” Steven Aldrich, GoDaddy’s senior vice president of business applications, told Small Business Trends. None of these concerns holds much weight, Aldrich noted.

“You are never too small to be on the Web. And you don’t need technical expertise; that is no longer a barrier,” he said.

As for cost, Aldrich said that today a business can purchase a website, domain and email address for one year for $1 from GoDaddy.

Companies that plan to roll out an online presence in the next two years tend to be younger. In fact, newer small businesses are nearly twice as likely to have plans to create a website compared to their older counterparts.

Business that dedicate their websites to effectively explaining why they are unique are most likely to see benefits from an online presence, Aldrich said.

“Service businesses do well—such as accountants and consultants,” he said. “They use their websites to tell their story and specifically why they are the best solution for you.”

Focusing the site on telling the company’s story in a compelling way, including highlighting what is unique about the company’s offering, whether it’s a product or a service, is the key to creating an impactful website, Aldrich said.

“You don’t need a lot of widgets and gadgets,” Aldrich said. “Explain why your business is unique.” Businesses with sites that follow this guideline about highlighting differentiation tend to perform better, he added.

One promising statistic in the survey, Aldrich highlighted, is that 84 percent who plan to build a website will ensure its mobile optimized.

“They recognize the power of all those people carrying around smartphones,” he said. “It’s great to see that small businesses realize the importance of the mobile economy.”

GoDaddy commissioned RedShift Research to conduct the study, for which it surveyed 4,009 small businesses (meaning with one to five employees) in June and July of this year. Businesses located in Australia, Brazil, Canada, India, Mexico, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and the United States were part of the study. GoDaddy commissioned the research to look at how very small businesses utilize the Internet.

Make it work without colours

The principle “if it works without colours, it works anywhere”  is a good, plain old usability.

Colours can be used to emphasise information and that can be a really powerful design element. However, if it works without colours, that is even more robust.

Mind the contrast

Good contrast helps mild vision impairment and make things much easier to read for everyone.

Consider background colour

Dyslexic audiences may find it easier to read when the page doesn’t have the strong glare of a white background. A softer tone is easier to read from and it will help add a personality to your design. Added bonus.

Be different

Taking all these factors into account, you will end up with a clear, accessible, responsive website. And it doesn’t have to look like a wider, bigger version of mobile layout.

Push yourself to think differently – as long as you don’t forget the all important accessibility, your responsive website will work well and stand out from the crowd. Give it a go.

Over 300 Cybersecurity Incidents on US Healthcare.gov Website

The web portal used by millions of consumers to get health insurance under President Barack Obama’slaw has logged more than 300 cybersecurity incidents and remains vulnerable to hackers, nonpartisan congressional investigators said Wednesday.

The Government Accountability Office said none of the 316 security incidents appeared to have led to the release of sensitive data on HealthCare.gov, such as names, birth dates, addresses, Social Security numbers, financial information, or other personal information.

Most of the incidents over nearly 18 months seemed to have involved electronic probing by hackers. HealthCare.gov offers subsidized private health insurance for people who don’t have access to workplace coverage.

Although GAO said the administration is making progress, its report concluded that security flaws “will likely continue to jeopardize the confidentiality, integrity and availability of HealthCare.gov.”

Investigators identified weaknesses protecting sensitive information that flows through a key part of the system, called the data services hub. Operating behind the scenes, the hub pings federal agencies such as Social Security, IRS and Homeland Security to verify the personal details of consumers.

The report also found “significant weaknesses” in health insurance sites operated by states, which connect to the data hub. Currently, 12 states and Washington, D.C., run their own websites.

Federal computer systems – from the Defense Department to the White House – are frequent targets for hackers. The HealthCare.gov incidents took place between October 2013 and March 2015.

HealthCare.gov’s data hub is one of the administration’s major technology projects, and has generally been regarded as successful. Even as the consumer-facing part of the system crashed during the botched rollout of the health care law in 2013, the hub continued to operate smoothly.

However, GAO said it found shortcomings, including insufficiently tight restrictions on “administrator privileges” that allow a user broad access throughout the system, inconsistent use of security fixes, and an administrative network that was not properly secured.

Overall, 41 of the security incidents involved personal information that was either not properly secured or was exposed to someone who wasn’t authorized to see it. Nearly all of those were classified as having a moderately serious impact.

In another type of incident, a list of government-employee account IDs, including passwords, was transmitted to staffers in an unencrypted email. That prompted a crash effort to create new passwords.

The report was released by Republican committee chairmen in the House and Senate on the sixth anniversary of the Affordable Care Act, even as the administration was talking up the achievements of the law, which has extended coverage to millions previously uninsured. Lawmakers asked the administration for more detail on security issues.

In a formal response to GAO, the Health and Human Services department said the security and privacy of consumer data is a top priority. The administration accepted the agency’s recommendations for improvements.

Separately, GAO said it also submitted 27 cybersecurity recommendations in a report that isn’t being made public due to its sensitive nature.
