How Often Should You Update Your Small Business Blog?

how often should you update your blog

Running a small business blog makes a lot of sense, marketing-wise. It’s great for SEO (search engine optimization), because search engines love websites with a steady stream of fresh, quality content. It’s great for engagement because visitors enjoy looking forward to new articles, resources and information on a regular basis.

So How Often Should You Update Your Blog?

You’ll find all sorts of advice out there on this topic. Some experts advocate quality over quantity, and say you can post to your blog once a week, or even once a month, as long as it’s consistently high-quality material – long, well-written posts with authoritative links and statistics and research.

Others adhere to the idea that it’s imperative to update your blog every day, even if you just throw up a dashed-off post that consists of a link and a few sentences of commentary. Frequent posting, they say, drives search engines more impressively than quality.

So, who’s right?

What’s the magic number for updating your blog that will give you the right balance between quality and quantity, keeping both search engines and visitors happy and returning to you again and again?

The unfortunate truth is there’s no magic number. But there are some updating frequencies that are better than others, and there is a right number of posts per week for you and your particular small business.

Here’s What You Shouldn’t Do

Don’t Post Less Frequently Than Once Per Week

Even if you have the most amazing quality blog posts ever written, if you’re not updating at least once a week, you’re losing momentum. Search engines crawl your website less often. Visitors and potential customers forget that your blog exists.

If your updates are more than a week apart, it’s about as effective as not blogging at all.

Don’t Set a Schedule That You Can’t Adhere To

While it’s true that daily content can give your small business blog a great boost, it’s equally true that a sudden drop in publishing frequency can damage your efforts.

Burnout can be a serious problem for bloggers. If you’re trying to write fresh content every single day, you’re probably on a fast track to running out of steam.

Unless you have someone whose only job is to write daily blog posts, or you’re planning to supplement original content with guest posts, reprints and material, you don’t have to write fresh. A daily post schedule probably isn’t the best choice for your small business blog. After all, you’ve got a business to run.

Here’s What You Should Do

Realize Blogging Done Right is Good for Business

When you have a regularly updated and engaging blog, you’re positioned for more website traffic and increased lead generation. According to recent data from marketing company Hubspot:

  • Companies that blog 3 to 5 times a month, or around once a week, have more than twice the traffic of companies that don’t.
  • Company blogs with 15 or more posts per month see more than five times the traffic of non-blogging companies.
  • Small businesses have the most significant results and the greatest traffic gains when they update blogs more often.
  • Increasing your publishing frequency from 3-5 times per month, to 6-8 times per month, can nearly double your inbound sales leads.

Set a Realistic Schedule and Stick to It

Consistency is the most important aspect of small business blogging. Once you have a regular schedule, your visitors will know to expect new material at those intervals. They’ll come back to look for your latest post. Search engines also give higher preference to regularly updated websites over those that update sporadically or infrequently.

For most small businesses, updating your blog one to three times per week is a realistic and effective schedule. Make your blog updates a priority, continue to provide quality posts and resources, and you’ll see returns in the form of more traffic and increased sales through your small business website.

Dell, Lenovo, HP to Launch ‘Affordable’ VR Headsets Alongside Windows 10 Creators Update

Dell, Lenovo, HP to Launch 'Affordable' VR Headsets Alongside Windows 10 Creators Update

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Headsets to come with support for ‘Creators Update’
  • Company showcased its Holographic UI during its Surface event
  • Update to roll out in early 2017

Microsoft showcased its Holographic UI in its full glory during its Surface event on Wednesday and from the looks of it, the company might have given us a glimpse of our ‘mixed reality’ computing future. The demonstrations given by the company were quite impressive but more importantly, the Redmond-based company announced that it has partnered with companies like Dell, Lenovo, Acer, Asus and HP to make affordable VR headsets that are capable of mixed reality and will launch alongside the Windows 10 Creators Update in Spring 2017.

The Redmond giant says the new VR headsets will have a starting price of around $300 (roughly Rs. 20,100). In a blog post, the company added, “And these accessories will be the first and only with inside-out, six-degrees of freedom. Unlike every other virtual reality headset in the market today, there will be zero need for a separate room and complicated setup.” The company says the headsets, apart from being affordable compared to the $500 headsets in the market today, will be designed to work with affordable laptops and PCs.

In order to produce content for these VR headsets, Microsoft announced the Windows 10 Creators Update, which will include a 3D framework designed around Microsoft’s HoloLens and other VR experiences. The Creators Update will allow developers to create content for VR with ease, and will be available in early 2017.The company also showcased its Microsoft new, revamped Paint 3D app, which was leaked recently. The revamped app includes tools for importing and handling 3D artwork, as well as integration with a new online community–Remix3D that allows users to share their creations or search other people’s creations. As reported by us earlier, the community is integrated with the massive 3D Warehouse, a repository for Trimble’s popular SketchUp software, and already contains millions of 3D objects.

Holographic UI was first unveiled by Microsoft last year in January and was presented as a device that allows users to enter a virtual world, through a headgear, and interact with the virtual objects present in it.

Samsung Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 Edge Update Reportedly Brings Select Note 7 Features

Samsung Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 Edge Update Reportedly Brings Select Note 7 Features
HIGHLIGHTS
Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge said to be receiving software update
Update brings change to Always-On Display feature
Changes make the smartphones more like the Galaxy Note 7
With the Galaxy Note 7 production suspended, Samsung’s biggest hope of surviving in the premium smartphone segment is its flagship Galaxy S7 series. Now, several Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge users are reporting that they are receiving a software update that adds Galaxy Note 7-note like features to their smartphone, specifically adding new functionality to the always-on display feature, among other features.

XDA Developer forum member first posted details of the update and wrote in a post, “Everything now is like Galaxy Note 7 AOD (always-on display) except the AOD notes feature and third party including the stock email app notifications is strangely not working!!” The firmware update for the Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge is also said to add the new Clock to the always-on display.

(Also see: Google Pixel Phones Are Here to Fill the Gap Left by the Samsung Galaxy Note 7)

The new Always-On Display version 1.4.02 will set Clock, Calendar, and Image setting as default digital clock, and a new Calendar app replaces the old version. The Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge users will be able to add their signature to Always-On Display. After the update, the Always-On Display will also show information about the music being played on the device.

The XDA Developer forum member however points that the new features aren’t fully functional on the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge. Some of the issues reported include the fact that the selected layout wouldn’t apply to the S View Cover, and the display won’t show the count for messages/ calls received.

Release notes posted by a XDA Developer user shows that the Samsung is highlighting the fact that the new features will consume less than 1 percent of whole battery amount per hour.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 has no doubt become one of the biggest debacles in the company’s history, and if a new survey is to be believed, the fire incidents have made a major dent in Samsung’s brand image. According to a recent survey conducted in the US, 40 percent of existing Samsung smartphone users “won’t buy another phone from the brand.”

Microsoft Releases Fix for Users Affected by Windows 10 Cumulative Update Issue

Microsoft Releases Fix for Users Affected by Windows 10 Cumulative Update Issue

Last week, Microsoft released Cumulative Update KB3194496 for users running Windows 10 Anniversary Update (version 1067), and, this caused problems for some users – trapping them in a loop after the installation failed. The issue only affected those who were previously on the Windows Insider Program before migrating the the public branch earlier this year, as well as some users still on the Windows Insider Program , Microsoft has now come out with a fix.

ZDNet reports that an email statement from Microsoft confirms that the update released for Windows 10 version 1607 on September 29 failed to install and would roll back for many users. The company claimed that a small number of customers in the Windows Insider Program that were running a previous build of the OS were affected.

(Also see: Windows 10 Now Running on 400 Million Active Devices, Says Microsoft)

“We became aware of an issue with the recent Windows 10 cumulative update that impacted a small number of customers in the Windows Insider Program that were running a previous build of the OS. We have created a solution to resolve this issue, which is now live and can be accessed here.”

Users affected by the update reported that after the system reached the 100 percent mark, they would get a prompt saying the process could not be completed and thereby reverting the changes, resulting in a loop of failed attempts.

Microsoft has released a patch that fixes the issue. That link takes you to the Windows 10 1607 (RS1) Script fix to unblock update for Insider.

There is no clear indication as to how many users have been affected although Microsoft says it’s a “small number”. However, ZDNet’s Ed Bott claims “the number is probably in the hundreds of thousands, representing systems that were in the Windows Insider Program, receiving preview releases, during the first half of 2016 before switching to the public branch.”

Nexus 6 Users Start Receiving Android 7.0 Nougat Update, October Android Security Update Released

Nexus 6 Users Start Receiving Android 7.0 Nougat Update, October Android Security Update Released

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The October security update resolves more than 40 issues
  • This security bulletin has two security patch level strings
  • Factory Images and OTA images are live

After promising the Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 LTE devices would get the Android 7.0 Nougat update in “the coming weeks” in the middle of September, Google has finally made good on its promise – at least for the Nexus 6. The update was released alongside the monthly Android security update for Nexus and Pixel devices. According to the security bulletin, Google has released two security patch level strings, one on October 1 and the other on October 5. The first one is partial patch with few bug fixes, while the October 5 patch brings crucial fixes and is the final version.

In August, the Android 7.0 Nougat update was first released to Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Nexus 9, Nexus Player, Pixel C tablet, and Android One General Mobile 4G devices only; while the Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 LTE were left out. However, Google has finally started rolling the Android Nougat update out to Nexus 6 users as well. The factory image and the OTA build are available on Google’s developer pages, while the OTA update should be rolling out soon. The update is about 860MB in size, and has the build number NBD90Z. The update carries the October security patch as well, reports Android Police.

This comes just hours before the big Google event. The tech giant is expected to unveil two new Pixel smartphones, alongside the first Android Nougat maintenance release. We expect the Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones to run on Android Nougat 7.1 out-of-the-box, and this update will bring significant improvements along with it.

For now, we have the security patch releasing to all compatible Nexus and Pixel devices, and factory images and OTA images have gone live as well. Between the two patches Google has fixed more than 40 issues including over two-dozen high severity issues and five critical problems.

The security bulletin assures that OEM partners were notified about the issues, and source code patches for these issues will be released to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) repository in the next 48 hours.
