What You Can Learn from One Fictional Movie Character – and Two Real Life Entrepreneurs

Despite all odds, Rocky Balboa believed in himself.

The fictional fighter in the Rocky movie series from the Philadelphia slums could have felt sorry for himself, given up and blamed others.

Did he? NO! As he says in Rocky III:

“Nobody owes nobody nothin’. You owe yourself.”

In other words, don’t think of all the things that can go wrong and then feel defeated because a problem arises. You owe it to yourself to give it your best … and make a grab for greatness.

Yet it’s hard to feel that way on days when it seems like everything that can go wrong, does.

I know. Sometimes as an entrepreneur it can feel like your dream is impossible.

Don’t give up!

It’s Not Just Movie Characters Who Achieve Against All Odds

While a multitude of quotes from the Rocky movies have inspired entrepreneurs, you don’t have to look to the movies for motivation.

Consider Mark Zuckerberg. A little more than a decade ago, he was a college student. He didn’t even graduate from college. Today, as co-founder of Facebook, he is the sixth richest person in the world on the Forbes 2016 billionaire list.

Rising from college student to CEO, Zuckerberg created a site that reaches over 1 billion daily active users — that’s nearly 15 percent of the world’s population!

Sounds impossible doesn’t it?

Or there’s Richard Branson, the iconic entrepreneur. He started with nothing and then built his own airline, Virgin Atlantic. He wasn’t from the airline industry. It wasn’t like he had a lot of money at the time, either. But somehow he started his own airline.

And today, he’s one of the handful of pioneers of private space flight with his company, Virgin Galactic.

Think about that a moment. Who starts their own space travel company? What could be more impossible than that?

Granted, those two people are unique. Few of us are going to become billionaires.

Get Motivated by People Who Reached for the Stars

So instead, draw inspiration from what they overcame to achieve a seemingly impossible thing. Being a billionaire is not the definition of success. No one is suggesting that just because you fall short of Zuckerberg’s net worth you can’t be successful.

Think about what it must have been like in the early days for Zuckerberg and Branson. Surely many things went wrong. Some people doubted them. They probably had trouble getting some of their calls returned. They likely worried about where they’d get the money to build their companies (even as they showed a confident face to the world). But somehow they kept on, driven by their dreams.

Whatever you are dreaming of in business, go for it.

Dream no small dreams. Don’t fixate on all the odds against you. Reach for the stars.

Xerox to Split Into Two, Icahn to Get Board Seats in One

Xerox to Split Into Two, Icahn to Get Board Seats in One

Xerox Corp said it would split into two companies, one holding its legacy hardware operations and the other its business process outsourcing unit, in which activist investor Carl Icahn will get three board seats.

Icahn, who first revealed a stake in Xerox in November, had said he would seek representation on the company’s board as well as pursue strategic alternatives. He later raised his stake to 8.13 percent.

Xerox shares rose 4.6 percent to $9.65 (roughly Rs. 655) in premarket trading on Friday.

The company, whose shares had fallen more than 30 percent in the past 12 months, has been trying to turn itself around by focusing on software and services as businesses cut costs and a switch to mobile devices hits demand for printers.

Larger rival Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co also split its computer and printer businesses from its faster-growing corporate hardware and services operations last year to adjust to the post-PC computing era.

Icahn has had considerable success with pushing companies to spin off their fast-growing businesses.

While eBay Inc split its payments business Paypal Holdings Inc, Manitowoc Co Inc separated its crane manufacturing business from its food service business.

Xerox said the separation would create a $11 billion (roughly Rs. 74,633 crores) document technology company and $7 billion (roughly Rs. 47,493 crores) business process outsourcing company.

Over 100,000 units Galaxy S7 series sold in first two days

Samsung Galaxy S7 edgeMore than 100,000 units of Samsung Electronics Co’sGalaxy S7 series smartphones were sold in South Koreawithin the first two days of its official launch, data showed on Sunday.

Sales of the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge reached a combined 60,000 on Friday and 40,000 on Saturday after the smartphones hit South Korean market on Friday,Yonhap cited the official data as showing.

The Galaxy S7 Edge accounted for some 40% of the two-day sales, the data added.

The initial pace of sales is roughly on par with demand generated when the Galaxy S6 series phones reached the market last year.

Samsung said sales for Saturday, which is usually a “slow day” when it comes to sales, fared pretty well.

The two latest high-end smartphone models, first showcased at a trade fair in Spain last month, came with much larger battery capacities and are water-proof and dust-resistant.

The phones also sport a much improved low-light camera with extremely fast auto focusing. The company, moreover, brought back an expandable memory option that was missing in the Galaxy S6 series.

Samsung expects the Galaxy S7 series to play a decisive role in revitalising sales as the company’s mobile business division has remained well below its heyday figures.
