Nexus 6 Users Start Receiving Android 7.0 Nougat Update, October Android Security Update Released

Nexus 6 Users Start Receiving Android 7.0 Nougat Update, October Android Security Update Released

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The October security update resolves more than 40 issues
  • This security bulletin has two security patch level strings
  • Factory Images and OTA images are live

After promising the Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 LTE devices would get the Android 7.0 Nougat update in “the coming weeks” in the middle of September, Google has finally made good on its promise – at least for the Nexus 6. The update was released alongside the monthly Android security update for Nexus and Pixel devices. According to the security bulletin, Google has released two security patch level strings, one on October 1 and the other on October 5. The first one is partial patch with few bug fixes, while the October 5 patch brings crucial fixes and is the final version.

In August, the Android 7.0 Nougat update was first released to Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Nexus 9, Nexus Player, Pixel C tablet, and Android One General Mobile 4G devices only; while the Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 LTE were left out. However, Google has finally started rolling the Android Nougat update out to Nexus 6 users as well. The factory image and the OTA build are available on Google’s developer pages, while the OTA update should be rolling out soon. The update is about 860MB in size, and has the build number NBD90Z. The update carries the October security patch as well, reports Android Police.

This comes just hours before the big Google event. The tech giant is expected to unveil two new Pixel smartphones, alongside the first Android Nougat maintenance release. We expect the Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones to run on Android Nougat 7.1 out-of-the-box, and this update will bring significant improvements along with it.

For now, we have the security patch releasing to all compatible Nexus and Pixel devices, and factory images and OTA images have gone live as well. Between the two patches Google has fixed more than 40 issues including over two-dozen high severity issues and five critical problems.

The security bulletin assures that OEM partners were notified about the issues, and source code patches for these issues will be released to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) repository in the next 48 hours.

Google Project Fi’s Wi-Fi Assistant Feature Now Available to Nexus Users

Google Project Fi's Wi-Fi Assistant Feature Now Available to Nexus Users

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Wi-Fi Assistant feature was first exclusive to Project Fi users
  • The feature can now be used on all Nexus smartphones
  • Project Fi is active only on Nexus 6P, Nexus 6 and Nexus 5X smartphones

Google is introducing a nifty feature for all Nexus users to help them save precious data. The company is releasing a feature called Wi-Fi Assistant that will enable users to connect to open and free Wi-Fi networks in their area automatically. The Wi-Fi Assistant feature will be made available to Nexus users in United States, Canada, Mexico, UK, and Nordic countries only. Also, only those Nexus smartphones that are running on Android 5.1 Lollipop will see this feature.

In order to enable Wi-Fi Assistant, head to Settings > Google > Networking > Wi-Fi Assistant. Switch the toggle on and off to set your preferred settings. Once Wi-Fi Assistant is enabled, a small key will show up in the top corner. This feature will let your smartphone automatically connect to open and free Wi-Fi networks in the vicinity, thereby saving your data whenever it can. It will automatically adjust to optimal connections and switch from one network to another without interrupting service. If you wish to opt out of a specific open Wi-Fi network, then just select ‘forget this network’ against the particular network in the Wi-Fi settings panel.

The Wi-Fi Assistant feature was earlier exclusive to Project Fi-enabled devices earlier, but Google has now made it available to all Nexus users. Google unveiled Project Fi mobile telephone network in April last year in a bid to curb use of expensive roaming data and keep phone bills low. After ten months of testing, it opened the service up for all users in March this year, and launched in partnerships with Sprint and T-Mobile. Just last month, it also announced a partnership with telecom giant Three. Project Fi is active only on Nexus 6P, Nexus 6 and Nexus 5X smartphones.

2016 Nexus Phones Tipped to Get Animated Home Button, Night Light, and More

2016 Nexus Phones Tipped to Get Animated Home Button, Night Light, and More

HIGHLIGHTS

  • New animation tipped to be associated with Google Assistant
  • The home button turns into four coloured dots in animation
  • Animation reported to stop working when Google Now is turned off

According to leaks, Google will be introducing a ‘flowery’ new animation to the home button on the onscreen navigation keys with the rumoured new launcher it will ship with the 2016 Nexus phones – something that may make its way to other Android 7.0 Nougat phones as a launcher.
As per the leaked gif image when you long press the home button, it turns into four small dots with the same colours that are associated with Google’s Assistant with a swift animation (seen below), reports Android Police. To further clear any doubts, the site says that its source has confirmed that when the Google Now feature is turned off for the smartphone, the animation goes away.googleassistant_homeanimation_1.gif

Currently the animation makes Google Now on Tap launch, but with Google Assistant still in development and only expected to be launched alongside the new Nexus phones, it remains possible the animation will give you options that tap into Google Assistant instead.

The reports of customisations for the Nexus series (in this case, via the launcher) is in line with Google CEO Sundar Pichai’s statement that the company was planning on getting more opinionated with is Nexus offerings.

There remains the possibility that these changes will make their way to Android 7.0 Nougat, or, that the launcher will work on non-Nexus smartphones. As with any other Nougat 7.0 leak, we can’t say for sure whether this will make Google’s final cut or not but if the company has indeed gone ahead with the development of this animation and wants to promote its Google Assistant feature further.

In other leaks, the search giant is tipped to have changed the colour theme for its ‘settings’ menu to a UI that is dark grey, blue, and white in colour. The night mode has also been suggested to come under the name ‘Night Light’.

The settings tab is suggested to be divided into two sections ‘All’ and ‘Support’ in the latest leaks. This particular change has been suggested to be exclusive to the upcoming Nexus devices.

Another feature “Quick Screen Check”, that has surfaced, will allow the users to check their notifications without waking the phone up fully.
