Google Brings Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them Features to Street View, Voice Commands, and More; Daydream Magic to Follow Soon

  • You can say the spell “lumos” to switch the flashlight on
  • ‘Fantastic Beasts’ sticker pack announced for Allo
  • VR game based on the spinoff movie announced

Harry Potter has been an integral part of an entire generation’s childhood and given that a spinoff movie, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, from the same franchise is about to release, the hype around wizards is at its peak. Google has tied up with Warner Bros. Pictures to bring some of the magic from Harry Potter universe to its services and the results are downright amazing.

The most impressive update has made way to the “OK Google” voice commands, which turn your smartphone into a magic wand. After saying “OK Google,” you can now use magic spell “lumos” to turn on the flashlight of your smartphone and say “nox” to switch it back off. If you want to put all the notifications and ringer to silent mode, you already know the spell, just say “silencio” and let the magic unfold by itself.

Google clearly didn’t want to stop there and has added the locations from New York in 1926, as recreated in the movie Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, to its Google Street View service. “Fans can visit MACUSA (Magical Congress of the USA); Steen National Bank, where Newt first meets Jacob Kowalski; the underground speakeasy The Blind Pig; and the magical apartment of Tina and Queenie Goldstein, two of the film’s key characters,” the search giant said in its blog post.

To make sure that the magical experience from Harry Potter doesn’t end there, the company has announced a VR game on “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” for its Daydream View headset, which will be available from later this month ( like it did with ‘Stranger Things’, Google has also announced a ‘Fantastic Beasts’ sticker pack for its chat application Google Allo, which will be made available for download soon.

If you haven’t tried out the spells for yourself yet, stop being a muggle and please go ahead to unleash the child in you.

Google Pixel, Pixel XL Leaked on Verizon Ahead of October 4 Event; Google Magic and Blue Colour Variant Revealed

  • Site suggests the Google Pixel and Pixel XL will be offered in Blue
  • Verizon also mentions ‘Google Magic’ as one of the highlights
  • The phones will be offered in 32GB and 128GB storage options

We’re just a few hours away from the launch of Google’s Pixel smartphones and the leaks continue to pour in. After pretty much revealing all there is to know about the devices on UK retailer Carphone Warehouse, we now have a little more from Verizon. The listing on Verizon’s site unofficially confirms a Blue model along with Black and White options that was previously leaked by Canadian carriers Bell and Telus.

(Also see: Everything You Can Expect From the Google Pixel Event Today)

The listing, spotted by Gizmodo, also shows some highlights about the devices, which includes what Verizon is calling ‘Google Magic’, which could just be the site’s own marketing ploy, but could also refer to a new, unknown feature. The site further reveals that the Google Pixel and Pixel XL will be offered in 32GB and 128GB storage options. Lastly and unsurprisingly, the devices come with 4G LTE support.

A separate reveal by TheTrademarkNinja shows an EU trademark application filed by the company with an official logo that reads “G Pixel Phone by Google”, which confirms that the devices are in fact going to be ‘Pixel’ smartphones.

Based on the Carphone Warehouse leak, the Google Pixel is said to feature a 5-inch full-HD (1080 x 1920 pixels) Amoled display with a pixel density of 441ppi and Gorilla Glass 4 on top. The device is powered by a 2.15GHz quad-core Snapdragon 821 processor with 4GB of RAM.

Meanwhile, the Google Pixel XL is listed with a 5.5-inch Quad HD (1440×2560 pixels) display sporting a pixel density of 534ppi and Gorilla Glass 4 on top. Other than the size and resolution of the display, the rest of the features are similar to the smaller Pixel. Both the devices also feature a 12-megapixel rear camera and 8-megapixel front.

The Pixel and Pixel XL will run on Android 7.1 Nougat with Pixel Launcher. The listings also mention both 32GB and 128GB inbuilt storage variants. Storage expansion via microSD card is also listed, but this seems unlikely considering Google’s entire previous Nexus lineup. The Pixel is listed to sport a 2770mAh battery, and the Pixel XL is listed with a bigger 3450mAh battery, both with fast charging capability.

On the software front, the Pixels is likely to come with Google’s latest Allo and Duo applications preloaded. Carphone Warehouse also revealed the two devices will offer unlimited storage for photos and videos at full resolution with Google Photos.

Along with the unveiling of the Pixel smartphones, the event on Tuesday is also expected to see the launch of the Google Home smart speaker, alongside other rumoured products like the Google Chromecast Ultra, and Google Wi-Fi smart router. The Daydream VR headset unveiled at at Google I/O this year is also expected to make an appearance.

Google’s event is set to start at 9:00am PT (9:30pm IST) on Tuesday, and Gadgets 360 will be covering the event live from San Francisco – so stay tuned.

Did Gartner get some aspects of Magic Quadrant analysis wrong?

Photo: Hindustan Times

Has Gartner Inc. got some aspects of its respected and influential Magic Quadrant analysis wrong?

Indeed, the research firm appears to have put out figures on the 2014 business analytics revenue of India’s top three technology firms that are far higher than actual numbers.

In its annual Gartner’s Magic Quadrant for Business Analytics report published on 22 September 2015, the technology research and advisory firm estimated 2014 (calendar year) business analytics revenue for Wipro Ltd at over $1 billion, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) at $2.1 billion and Infosys Ltd at $950 million. Revenue is one of the many metrics Gartner analysts are believed to use before giving their opinion in trademarked Magic Quadrant reports. Considered the world’s most influential report for enterprise technology, the Magic Quadrant serves as an important filter for chief information officers at companies to shortlist technology vendors. Magic Quadrant reports evaluate technology firms in over 60 areas.

Wipro, which started declaring analytics revenue from April 2015, generated about $500 million in 2014, while for TCS and Infosys, the four areas comprising digital technologies—cloud computing, analytics, mobile and social platforms—together brought $2 billion and $700 million in revenue, respectively.

Gartner analysts have clubbed the three homegrown information technology (IT) firms among the 18 technology vendors evaluated, in the “Challengers” quadrant, as it ranked suppliers based on their “ability to execute” and “completeness of vision” and placed them in one of four quadrants: “Leaders”, “Challengers”, “Visionaries” or “Niche Players”.

Since Gartner has overestimated analytics revenues, executives say it is unlikely any Indian firm will challenge these numbers. However, the discrepancy could become an embarrassment for Gartner Inc., which generated 73% of its total $2.16 billion annual revenue from research reports, which are subscribed by hundreds of thousands of enterprises and individuals across the world. It also questions the methodology of analysts at the Stamford, Connecticut-based Gartner for preparing these reports.

Gartner did not offer a comment on how it arrived at these numbers or the methodology deployed in preparing the report despite repeated requests.

Digital technologies is a fuzzy term. Most companies are coy about sharing actual revenue splits and even definitions. However, over the last 10 months, Indian technology companies have started sharing some insights on revenues from these technologies. “We do categorise digital what we call DIS differently, although even in digital, large percentage is maintenance. So I think everybody has a different definition for these terms. Our digital practice is about 8% of business,” Infosys chief executive Vishal Sikka said on 28 May 2015 at an analyst event sponsored by Cowen and Co., LLC. That suggests that Infosys generated $700 million business from cloud computing, analytics and social and mobile platforms for fiscal year ending 31 March 2015. In July last year, N. Chandrasekaran, chief executive officer of TCS, said that digital revenue was 12.5% of company’s $15.5 billion in revenue, implying about $2 billion in business, while a fortnight later, Wipro too for the first time declared revenues from analytics space.

“Gartner MQs (Magic Quadrants) are the most influential report in any sector,” said Richard Stiennon, a former vice-president at Gartner and currently running IT-Harvest, a US-based Internet security firm. “Buyers at large organizations use the MQ to scope the entire space and often shortlist the leaders. For a vendor to be in the Leaders Quadrant means instant recognition and an acceleration in deal opportunities.” Although Gartner did not share the methodology behind these reports, Stiennon and two other experts at homegrown IT firms said that Gartner analysis is based on a “questionnaire” sent to each of the technology vendors. However, Nasdaq-listed Cognizant Technology Solutions Corp. and Infosys toldMint that these revenue numbers are “Gartner’s estimates” as the companies do not share these numbers. TCS declined to comment if Gartner’s estimates are based on the company sharing its analytics revenue while Wipro said that it “publishes these numbers every quarter” and is “unable to comment on an external report”.

Since Gartner Magic Quadrant is highly influential and because it does not fully disclose its “opinion” when evaluating technology firms, the report has over the last few years faced criticism, from analysts to even technology firms. In 2014, NetScout Systems Inc., a US-based firm which helps companies better manage their IT networks, filed a lawsuit against Gartner, questioning how the research firm placed NetScout in one of the quadrants in Network Performance Monitoring and Diagnostics Magic Quadrant report. “When a company is publicly disclosing numbers, then it’s pretty pointless to do your own analysis and come with your own numbers,” said a CEO of another research firm, which competes with Gartner, referring to Wipro’s example. “So these kind of things obviously erodes or say dents the respect you have built and questions the whole model, based on which you write these reports.”

However, Stiennon said that it is tedious to get revenues from software sales, when compared to car sales, and as long as Gartner analysts maintain consistency in their reports, this should not be much of a challenge.

“Absolute revenue is not as important as changes in revenue. As long as the analysts are consistent in their methodology from year to year, there is value in their reported numbers regardless of the overall accuracy,” said Stiennon.

“Keep in mind that tracking software sales is much harder than say automobiles where there are multiple ways to check a vendor’s claims. You can poll dealerships, vehicle registration numbers, etc. A large vendor such as Wipro can decide what proportion of a bundled sale they will assign to BA (business analytics) for instance, even though they may have discounted that portion of the sale significantly. I have seen vendors report sales figure to Gartner based on “list” prices instead of actual prices for instance”.

Dartmouth’s ‘Magic Wand’ Pairs Medical Devices to Wi-Fi

Dartmouth's 'Magic Wand' Pairs Medical Devices to Wi-Fi

Doctors could keep better tabs on their patients between visits with a simple wave of a magic wand-like device being developed at Dartmouth College.

The prototype, dubbed “Wanda,” is part of a multi-university project to develop ways to protect patient confidentiality as health care increasingly moves out of hospitals and doctors’ offices and into the home. But beyond safety, simplicity also is a key goal, said doctoral student Tim Pierson, Wanda’s creator.

“Quite frequently in the computer security business, we invent things that are super-secure but hard to use, and people don’t understand them,” he said. “We set out to make something that my parents and in-laws could use.”

Here’s how Wanda could work: A doctor sends a patient home with a Wi-Fi-enabled blood pressure cuff. Instead of having to type in a passcode to connect the monitor to a home Wi-Fi network, the patient just points the wand at the device.

Once that connection is made, blood pressure readings can be transmitted back to the doctor’s office.

“In a hospital you tend to have trained people who can configure medical devices, and set them up and monitor them to make sure they’re working,” Pierson said. “If we’re going to move into a world where sensors are outside of the hospital, we started wondering what are the challenges to configuring these devices in the home where there is no IT team, or in a small clinic with a couple of doctors and nurses?”

The prototype consists of a ruler with two antennas attached to it. It can acquire a network name and password by being plugged into a Wi-Fi router, and is then detached and pointed at the medical device to connect it to the network. The password information is converted into binary code – ones and zeroes – with one antenna transmitting information packets containing the “ones” and while the other sends the “zeroes.”

Because the medical device is close to the wand, it can tell which packet came from which antenna based on the signal strength and can reconstruct the information. But a hacker farther away couldn’t tell the difference.

“One of the good things about this system is that the user doesn’t even have to know that information. The wand can get it from your Wi-Fi router and impart it on the device,” he said. “We talked to a lot of people who have Wi-Fi in their homes and have no idea what their password is.”

Researchers elsewhere have tried similar approaches using sound to transmit a secret key that allows devices to be paired, or accelerometers that pair devices if they are shaken, said Pierson. One drawback of those approaches is that they require some kind of extra sensor or equipment to be included in the medical device.

Pierson’s project is part a $10-million, five-year grant from the National Science Foundation to Dartmouth, Johns Hopkins University, the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, the University of Michigan and Vanderbilt University.
