Apple Unveils LG UltraFine 5K Display, Developed for the New MacBook Pro

Apple Unveils LG UltraFine 5K Display, Developed for the New MacBook Pro

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The display sports a resolution of 2880×5120 pixels
  • Affordable option LG UltraFine 4K Display launched at $700
  • Displays available for purchase on Apple store

On Thursday, in one of the rare occurrences at Apple’s event, company’s Senior Vice President of Marketing Phil Schiller unveiled a 5K display made by LG, not by Apple, while showcasing the capabilities of company’s new MacBook Pro. Apple usually doesn’t advertise other company’s products at its launch events but Schiller explained the reason for this particular aberration. Schiller said that the 5K display by LG was designed in collaboration with Apple, and keeping the new MacBook Pro in mind. The company also revealed just how many 4K and 5K external displays the new MacBook Pro models could support simultaneously.

The 27-inch LG UltraFine 5K Display, as the name suggests, comes with a screen resolution of 2880×5120 pixels, sports an IPS panel, and has been priced by the company at $1,300 (roughly Rs. 86,900).

Apart from the impressive screen resolution, the LG UltraFine 5K Display comes with one Thunderbolt 3 port and three regular USB Type-C ports. The Thunderbolt 3 cable, which comes with the display, is capable of not just displaying the content from MacBook Pro to the screen, but also charging the laptop simultaneously with 85W of charging power. The display comes with inbuilt stereo speakers, camera, and microphone to provide extra utility options to the user.

People who are interested in a more affordable option can instead opt for LG UltraFine 4K Display, which has been priced at $700 (Rs. 46,800) and was launched by the company on Thursday. Both displays have been made available for purchase on Apple’s own website. As for support for multiple displays, Apple revealed the number of simultaneous external displays the new MacBook Pro models can support. Due to the presence of Thunderbolt 3 ports with DisplayPort interface, the 15-inch new MacBook Pro supports up to four 4K external displays at the same time. Further, the laptop is capable of supporting up to two 5K displays simultaneously. Due to the hardware limitations, the 13-inch version of the MacBook will not be able to support the same number of displays as the 15-inch version of the laptop – it can support up to two 4K displays simultaneously, and one 5K display.

The new 13-inch MacBook Pro comes with an Intel Iris GPU, compared with the Radeon Pro 400 Series Graphics present on the 15-inch version of the laptop.

Of course, one of the most crucial features when it comes to connection with multiple displays, is that in addition to the external displays, the MacBook Pro provides simultaneous support for the full native resolution of the inbuilt display.

Bengaluru: Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd is in talks with LG Chem Ltd to supply batteries for its new smartphones, the Nikkei newspaper reported, said people familiar with the matter.

Samsung, the world’s biggest smartphone maker, scrapped production of the their flagship device Galaxy Note 7 and said the decision would take a hit to its operating profit of about $3 billion over the next two quarters.

The company had blamed faulty batteries for the original problem in its flagship device, but has given no indication about the cause of the overheating seen in the replacements.

The companies are discussing ways to supply batteries to Samsung’s new smartphones starting next year, the report said.

Samsung’s subsidiary, Samsung SDI Co. Ltd, is the dominant battery supplier for the Note 7, supplying around 70% of the batteries globally, according to analyst estimates.

LG Mocks Samsung, Takes a Jab at Galaxy Note 7 Recall in SMS Blast

LG Mocks Samsung, Takes a Jab at Galaxy Note 7 Recall in SMS Blast

While Samsung is busy putting out fires (literally) on the Galaxy Note 7 recall, other smartphone makers are getting the most out of Samsung’s misery. The latest to take a dig at the South Korean giant is LG. The company’s customer care department seems to be randomly sending messages to users ahead of the Diwali festival with a friendly, yet mocking message.

The message – “Heard the news of exploding products? At LG, our products go through multiple tests to ensure safety of our most valuable asset – YOU. Have a safe Diwali with LG.” – is a clear jab at the recent news of exploding Galaxy Note 7 devices from Samsung.

Samsung officially announced a recall of its Galaxy Note 7 on September 2. Reports of Galaxy Note 7 smartphones catching fire has resulted in an unprecedented recall, costing the company billions of dollars. Samsung has been slowly replacing affected Galaxy Note 7 devices and said on Thursday more than 1 million people globally are now using Galaxy Note 7 smartphones with batteries that are not vulnerable to overheating and catching fire.

In September, Lenovo-owned Motorola also took a jab at Samsung when it offered free Incipio offGRID Power Pack with every Moto Z Droid purchase with a quote that read “At Moto, our priority is safety first. Unlike some manufacturers, we adhere to the highest standards in quality and testing of all our batteries.”

The LG V20 is ready to go on sale this month and it looks like the company is hoping Samsung’s recent tragedy will attract customers over to its side. LG India’s Managing Director, Kim Ki-Wan, confirmed to Gadgets 360 that the company plans to bring the LG V20 smartphone to India soon, perhaps just in time for the Diwali festival.

The wireless headset comes with a rechargeable battery that claims to give you 13 hours of talk time (speaker mode up to 9.5 hours) and up to 17.9 days of standby time.

Alongside the LG Tone Active+, the company is also going to demo many other accessories. LG V20 With Android 7.0 Nougat to Launch in September

LG V20 With Android 7.0 Nougat to Launch in September

South Korea’s LG Electronics Inc said on Monday it plans to start selling a new premium smartphone from September, hoping the device will help its struggling mobile business recover from disappointing sales.

LG said its V20 device, successor to the V10 that went on sale in October last year, will be the first product to run on Google’s latest version of its Android mobile operating system called Nougat at launch. The company did not disclose further details on the V20.

The firm has two main premium phone series and its G5 phone, launched in March, has had weaker-than-expected sales following initial production difficulties. As a result, the South Korean firm’s mobile business reported its fifth straight quarter of operating loss for April-June.

The company said last week the launch of new products, including a successor to the V10, will help its performance improve in the third quarter. Rivals are also pushing new devices to market soon, however: Samsung Electronics Co Ltd will unveil its next Galaxy Note smartphone on Wednesday, while Apple Inc is expected to launch new iPhones in September.

LG Appliances and TV Earnings at Record Levels but No G5 Boost for Mobile Division

LG Appliances and TV Earnings at Record Levels but No G5 Boost for Mobile Division

South Korea’s LG Electronics Inc on Thursday posted its highest quarterly operating profit in two years, thanks to record appliances and television earnings that offset another loss for the mobile division.

The world’s second-largest TV maker behind SamsungElectronics Co Ltd said in a regulatory filing its April-June profit more than doubled from a year earlier to KRW 585 billion ($521 million), matching its earlier guidance.

LG said it expected July-September operating profit to be higher than the KRW 294 billion profit it reported a year earlier, while revenue would be similar to the 14 trillion won recorded in the third quarter of 2015.

Operating profit for the appliances division jumped 49 percent from a year earlier to a quarterly record of KRW 433.7 billion, the company’s top earner for the seventh straight quarter as sales of premium products continued to support margins.

LG’s TV division swung to a profit of 356.7 billion won, also a quarterly record, boosted by sales of high-end televisions and improved cost structure amid declining panel prices.

The mobile business continued to struggle, however, reporting a KRW 153.5 billion operating loss, the fifth straight quarter in the red as sales of the flagship G5 fell short of expectations.

The company in April guided for a sharp second-quarter rebound in mobile earnings on G5 sales. The phone was received positively by critics for allowing users to upgrade functions such as the camera through attachable modules.

But initial manufacturing problems undermined early momentum for the G5, analysts said, leading to disappointing sales.

The firm said the third quarter would remain difficult for the business though its performance would improve as new products launched.

LG’s second-quarter revenue rose 0.6 percent to KRW 14 trillion, matching its guidance for earlier this month.
