Amazon Launches New Kindle Oasis, Most Expensive To Date

amazon kindle oasis0

Each new iteration of Amazon’s Kindle e-reader brings with it new innovations and price points that make these devices a great value. However, this time around, Amazon might have jacked up the price a bit too much for the Kindle Oasis.

Early reviews of the Kindle Oasis have been great, with virtually everyone agreeing on the functional improvements Amazon has made for this reader. But they also agree the $289.99 price tag is high, compared to the Kindle, Kindle Paperwhite and Kindle Voyage, which come in at $80, $120, and $200 respectively.

What the Amazon Oasis Gives You for $290

The Kindle Oasis is 30 percent thinner and 20 percent lighter than previous Kindles.  When portable gadgets lose size, it generally means the battery suffers, and this is the case with Oasis. However, Amazon has overcome this challenge with a frame and cover that doubles as a rechargeable battery. According to the company, you can expect a battery life of eight weeks with 30 minutes of daily reading or months on standby. If you don’t use the case, you can get more than 2 weeks of battery life.

The Kindle Oasis weighs in at only 4.6 ounces or 131 grams with a new 6-inch Paperwhite display. It has 60 percent more LEDs for better reading under all light conditions. It is made from chemically reinforced glass that is much stronger, but still maintains the same 300 ppi resolution and similar contrast of the Paperwhite and Voyage Kindles.

The brains and battery for the Oasis are housed on the right side of the device with a tapered design that doubles as grip (If you are a lefty, don’t worry, a built in accelerometer automatically changes the content when you hold it on your left hand).  This makes one handed operation of the Kindle much easier, letting you use your thumb to access the front bezel to turn pages.

  • Content Formats Supported: Kindle Format 8 (AZW3), Kindle (AZW), TXT, PDF, unprotected MOBI, PRC natively; HTML, DOC, DOCX, JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP through conversion.

Kindles are E-readers, and besides the connectivity they offer to download books, there is little else you can use the device for in business. But you can receive documents on it using WiFi or free 3G connectivity.

Unlike other mobile devices, e-readers and tablets have longer lives. This means the well-made Kindle readers of the past are still being used, and it will take real innovation for owners of these devices to buy another one. While the Kindle Oasis has some noteworthy improvements, it may not be enough for older Kindle owners to ditch their perfectly working readers for this version. When you add the higher price tag to the equation, it may be a deal breaker.

You can preorder the Kindle Oasis now, with shipping scheduled to start on April 27th.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The app lets you browse for happenings based location or interest
  • Events is a stand-alone spin on a section at Facebook
  • More than 100 million people daily use Facebook’s events section

Facebook on Friday released a mobile app for finding local happenings to enjoy with friends.

The Events app tailored for iPhones (not available in India yet) hit Apple’s App Store, with a version “coming soon” for smartphones powered by Google-backed Androidsoftware, Facebook product manager Aditya Koolwal said in an online post.

Events is a stand-alone spin on a section at the leading online social network that lets people share plans for concerts, poetry slams, plays or other types of events they are interested in attending.

“When you open Events, you can quickly catch up on new events your friends are interested in, recently-announced events by the Pages you like, and updates from events you’re already connected to,” Koolwal said.

More than 100 million people daily use Facebook’s events section to discover activities they can take part in with friends, according to Koolwal. The Events app lets people browse for happenings based on factors such as location or interest, and to explore potential outing options with the help of interactive maps.

Plans made in Events are organised on a calendar and shared back to Facebook friends.

California-based Facebook has been building a family of mobile applications to stay tuned into modern lifestyles in which smartphones are used to quickly connect and share with friends or colleagues.

Facebook has a mobile app for the social network, as well as Messenger and WhatsApp messaging programs that each claim more than a billion users.

Facebook also owns photo and video sharing app Instagram, which reported earlier this year that it topped 500 million users.

Govt launches ‘Hawa Badlo’ mobile app to monitor New Delhi’s pollution

A screen grab of Change the Air website

A screen grab of Change the Air website

New Delhi: The Indian capital, labouring under the label of being the world’s most polluted city, is trying something new to help clean up its air.

A smartphone application that allows citizens to report the presence of construction dust or the burning of leaves and garbage in public parks to authorities was launched on Friday.

The “Hawa Badlo,” or “Change the Air,” app has two versions. One allows citizens to take pictures of likely pollutants. The other allows authorities to investigate and act on valid complaints.

Over the last few years, New Delhi has struggled with ways to handle the pollution, which becomes especially obvious during the colder winter months as the city’s air turns to a grey haze.

The newest measure, the phone app, was launched by the Environmental Pollution (Prevention and Control) Authority, a monitoring group set up on the order of India’s Supreme Court in April.

Over the last decade or so, India, like neighbouring China, has seen pollution spiral as its economy has boomed and it has continued to rely on burning coal to generate electricity. The number of vehicles on the road has skyrocketed, while hundreds of millions of impoverished people still use wood, kerosene or whatever they can grab at the garbage dump to build fires for cooking or keeping warm on winter nights.

Over the last two years, the government has tried a slew of measures to control the air pollution. These include stricter emission norms for cars and a tax on diesel-fueled trucks that enter the city.

The city has also attempted to limit the number of cars on the roads during the winter months, when the air quality is at its worst. The city authorities twice ordered cars with odd and even numbered license plates to ply on alternate days for a period of two weeks each.

Candy Crush Creator Launches Live Multiplayer Card Game ‘Shuffle Cats’ for Android, iOS

Candy Crush Creator Launches Live Multiplayer Card Game 'Shuffle Cats' for Android, iOSCandy Crush Creator Launches Live Multiplayer Card Game ‘Shuffle Cats’ for Android, iOS
HIGHLIGHTS
Shuffle Cats allows you to play rummy on mobile
It enables you to play with other players across the world in real-time
The game is created by Candy Crush maker King
King.com, the company behind the famous Candy Crush game on mobile, has now released a new game for Android and iOS users. Shuffle Cats is a live multiplayer card game that allows you to play rummy real-time with other players across regions.

Shuffle Cats brings the traditional card game rummy on smartphones. It allows players from across borders to play with each other (this means that the app will use data), and compete in the game of cards.

As the name suggests, the characters in the game are all inspired by the feline species, with names like ‘Montie’ to boast. Just like rummy, you’ve got to meld pairs or runs to win the game, and earn points to level up. Each player is rewarded with 1000 gems at first, and to go up each level, a player has to give up a stack of his gem treasure. Whichever player wins, takes the gems along with them, while the other loses his stack. Just like all games, as you level up, the game keeps getting harder and more competitive.

Each player also has a set of Lucky Charms that he can use to boost his chances against an opponent while playing a crucial game. Users can even interact with players using the live chat option inside the game.
Apart from this new Shuffle Cats game, the Candy Crush creator is also reportedly working on a mobile shooter game, and was even looking for employing people for the same.

Shuffle Cats is available for download for free on the App Store and Google Play. The game is 109MB in size on the App Store, and 61MB on Google Play. Shuffle Cats includes in-app purchases.

Apple Launches 2TB iCloud Storage Plan Ahead of iPhone 7 Event

Apple Launches 2TB iCloud Storage Plan Ahead of iPhone 7 Event
HIGHLIGHTS
It costs $19.99 in the US
50GB, 200GB, 1TB iCloud storage options still available
The iPhone 7 is set to launch on September 7
Apple has introduced a new tier in its iCloud storage plans. Alongside the 1TB plan, the Cupertino giant has now introduced a 2TB plan for $19.99 per month as well. For Indian users, the new plan costs Rs. 1,300 per month.

This move comes just a week before the iPhone 7 launch event on September 7. Apple is heavily rumoured to unveil the new 256GB storage variant, and upping the iCloud storage plan seems certainly seems to be an associated strategic move.

Expanding to 2TB would follow the current iCloud storage pattern, as 9to5Mac notes. The former largest tier, 1TB, was roughly eight times as large as the top storage model – 128GB. With the bump up to 2TB of iCloud storage available to users, Apple appears to want to maintain the same ratio for the anticipated 256GB storage variant.

For users who are unaware, when you first sign up for iCloud storage, the first 5GB is free. After that, Apple offers plans for 50GB, 200GB, 1TB, and now 2TB as well. In the US, these plans cost $0.99, $2.99, $9.99, and $19.99 per month respectively. In India, these plans cost Rs. 65, Rs. 190, Rs. 650, and Rs. 1,300 per month respectively. For other countries, check the price list here.
In any case, Apple is going to unveil the iPhone 7 with its new storage options next week. This year, Apple is sticking with minor changes and looks to break its tick-tock cycle. The camera on the 4.7-inch variant is pegged to get OIS, while the 5.5-inch variant is said to sport a new dual camera module. The company is ditching the 16GB base storage variant, in favour of 32GB. There’s also a Space Black variant that is expected to be introduced.

Google Launches Android Game That Lets You Explore the Himalayas in 3D

Google Launches Android Game That Lets You Explore the Himalayas in 3D

HIGHLIGHTS

  • It allows users to visit the Himalayan region
  • The app is built using Google’s 3D Maps imagery
  • It works only on smartphones running on Android 4.4 KitKat and above

Niantic, when it was a startup within Google, leveraged Google Maps as well as crowdsourced data to build the location-based app Field Trip and augmented reality game Ingress, before being spun off last year. Since then, the company has become a household name thanks to the runaway success of Pokemon Go, another location-based AR game. Now Google, leveraging its 3D mapping data, has launched its own experimental location-based game for children called Verne: The Himalayas.

The game essentially lets users roam about the Himalayas alongside a 500-foot Yeti called Verne. The game is only released for Android users, and is now available on Google Play for free. Built using Google’s 3D Maps imagery, the game lets users explore the Himalayas as the character Verne, run atop Mt. Everest, hang glide, ride a jetpack, skate across icy lakes, chase an argali goat, and even bang a gong.

As Verne moves along; famous points, landmarks and regions are highlighted within the app educating users about the geography. Very few get the privilege to explore the Himalayas, and with this app, Google looks to bring that exploration experience to the smartphone in an interactive manner.

In its blog post introducing the game, the Google Maps team said, “For years, Google Maps has been adding 3D imagery from all over the world – New York City, the Grand Canyon, Mont Blanc, and more. A few of us started wondering if this 3D imagery could make learning about the world a bit more fun for kids. We started playing with quick prototypes, and even brainstormed with our own kids to get inspired by their sense of curiosity. Our idea became a new, experimental app called Verne: The Himalayas. [..] We’re excited to share it today as a fun way for anyone to take a summer trip to the tallest mountain range in the world.”

For now, the game only focuses on visiting the Himalayan region and learning more about it, but we expect Google to release more games highlighting other famous regions across the globe in the future. Verne: The Himalyas app is 213MB in size and works only on smartphones running on Android 4.4 KitKat and above. There is no word on availability for iOS devices.

The Pokemon Go game managed to become an instant success because of its recall value of the famous Pokemon series, and its interactive gameplay. The game was downloaded more than 10 million times within a week of its release in July, becoming the fastest such app to do so.

Nintendo Launches NES Classic Edition With 30 Built-In Games Like Mario, Pac-Man

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Nintendo’s next console is a revamped NES
  • It will be available in November
  • Don’t expect an official India release

Hot on the heels of what seems to be a bonafide hit inPokemon Go, Nintendo has announced that its iconic home console, the NES or Nintendo Entertainment System will be reintroduced for sale this year. Dubbed as The Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition it comes with 30 games, HDMI support, and a controller. It will cost $59.99 (around Rs. 4,000) and will be available from November 11 in the US. An international release date has not been announced.

What’s interesting is its games can be played with a second player by attaching a controller. There will be a standalone NES Classic Controller for sale at $9.99 (approximately Rs. 620). You can also use the Wii’s Classic Controller or the Wii U’s Classic Controller Pro. When a Wii Remote is attached, the NES Classic Controller can also be used to play Virtual Console NES games on a Wii U or Wii system. In a welcome addition, each game has multiple suspend points unlike their initial releases, allowing you to come back at a later time.

The Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition appears to be the company’s much delayed reaction to emulators on Android and PC and with a slew of classic games for it already available on the Wii and Wii U, many hardcore gamers would simply not see the appeal. However the larger, mainstream audience would as the entry barrier towards experiencing some of Nintendo’s greatest hits will be significantly reduced.
