Patch is part of monthly cumulative update for Windows

Microsoft identified Strontium as group that were targeting users
Microsoft has issued a patch for the critical Windows 10 system vulnerability brought to light by Google last week, it said in its security bulletin announcement on Tuesday. The Redmond-based software giant had expressed its displeasure with the disclosure by the search giant, which had cited the bug’s active targeting as its reasoning for going public.

The fix is available as part of Windows’ monthly updates. Microsoft claimed the vulnerability did not affect anyone using Microsoft Edge on Windows 10 Anniversary Update, and any attacks could also be detected using Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection. For everyone else, hackers who manage to successfully exploit the vulnerability “could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights”.

After Google’s Threat Analysis Group reported their findings, Microsoft traced the activity to a hacker group it calls Strontium, which mostly dabbles in “low-volume spear-phishing”. According to Microsoft, Strontium has been linked with more zero-day exploits to their name than any other group in 2016. The group mostly targets government agencies, diplomatic institutions, and military organisations, along with defence contractors and public policy research institutes.
And owing to the risk involved, Microsoft’s Windows and Devices Group VP Terry Myerson believes coordinated vulnerability disclosure is better for customers. “Google’s decision to disclose these vulnerabilities before patches are broadly available and tested is disappointing, and puts customers at increased risk,” he added.

Now that Microsoft has a patch out, you should check the updates section to ensure you’re in the clear. And if you’re yet to update Adobe Flash, get on that pronto.

Many iPhone 7 Users Reporting Bluetooth Connectivity Issues; iOS 10 May Be the Culprit

Many iPhone 7 Users Reporting Bluetooth Connectivity Issues; iOS 10 May Be the Culprit

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Spotty Bluetooth connectivity common among iPhone 7 users
  • Apple has been releasing updates in quick succession to fix issues
  • Apple has not yet officially acknowledged the Bluetooth issue

Since sales for Apple’s latest iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus began, users around the world have experienced a number of issues, bugs, and glitches with their devices. Earlier reports pertained to issues like a weird hissing noise, loss in cellular service and Lightning EarPod issues. Recently, two separate polls revealed that spotty Bluetooth connectivity was among the most common issues being faced by users.

The polls, conducted by popular tech sites Gizmodo and 9to5Mac, reveal that many users are unable to connect their iPhones to in-car entertainment systems. The problem, however, is not limited to iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus users. Those who have updated their iPhone units to the latest iOS 10 OS are also facing the issue.

Gizmodo has received 12 different email tips related to Bluetooth connectivity on the iPhone. One of the readers told the site that automatic Bluetooth connectivity failed with the iPhone 7 but worked seamlessly with older units like iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s.

Meanwhile, 9to5Mac has received complaints from BMW owners stating that their iPhone 7 device abruptly disconnects or stops working when connected to their car’s system.

Apple has been releasing updates in quick succession in its attempt to solve various bugs and issues. So far, none of the updates have resolved the Bluetooth connectivity issue and one can expect a third update to iOS 10 to roll out soon enough to address that. Notably however, Apple has not yet officially acknowledged the issue.

Spotty Bluetooth connectivity as an issue would not have garnered so much attention had Apple stayed with the headphone jack. However, with the Cupertino giant aiming for a wireless future, Bluetooth connectivity is now a major factor for Apple’s latest devices and the company needs to make sure that connectivity is seamless on this front.

The Enforcement Directorate today issued fresh summons to liquor baron Vijay Mallya to make a personal appearance before its investigating officer here on April 2 in connection with its money laundering probe in the over Rs 900 crore IDBI loan fraud case.

The new summons came after the United Breweries (UB) group Chairman had yesterday sought more time from the agency to present himself on a later date instead of the scheduled time for today.

Official sources said the agency accepted his plea and gave Mallya the new date of April 2 to “join investigations in person.”

The beleaguered businessman had informed the Investigating Officer (IO) of the case through email yesterday that he would not be able to keep the date of today even as he sought fresh time next month in this regard in a email communication.

They said after “studying the reply and reasons” cited by Mallya, including a communication he said he made to some agencies earlier that he would be out of India in March, the agency issued the fresh date.

The fresh summons to Mallya have been issued under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and it requires him to furnish documents related to his personal investments and finances, Income Tax Returns for the last five years and Passport.

ED Director Karnal Singh is camping here since yesterday to supervise the high profile probes being conducted by the agency including that of Mallya’s and the other related to former Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal, his family and others.

The ED had recently registered a money laundering case against Mallya and others based on a CBI FIR registered last year. The agency is also investigating the overall financial structure of the now defunct Kingfisher Airlines and will look into any payment of kickbacks to secure loan.
