HIGHLIGHTS
According to the latest leak, the NX will be called the Nintendo Duo
Earlier this week specs, features, and price of the NX was leaked
Nintendo is yet to officially reveal the console
It appears that the Nintendo’s latest console, codenamed the NX may finally be named as Nintendo Duo at retail if the latest rumour surrounding the yet to be announced console is to be believed.

According to an image posted on Japanese forum 2Chan which allegedly stems from a software partner briefing, the device will be called the Nintendo Duo.

(Also see: Pokemon CEO Confirms Nintendo NX Is a Handheld and Home Console Hybrid)

This could make sense considering that past reports have suggested it would be a console and handheld hybrid. Nonetheless, 2Chan’s track record has been on the inconsistent side. But with an NX announcement in the offing, we won’t have to wait too long to find out.

Earlier in the week information on the NX’s price, features, and specifications found their way onto Reddit. For one, the games will be on cartridges. No surprise considering several sources have already confirmed this. 4K streaming for Netflix along with 1080p and 60fps for gaming have been talked about.

(Also see: Nintendo NX Price, Features, and Specs Leaked?)
“4k streaming has been mentioned. – What this likely means is playback of content such as Netflix, etc. Not gameplay,” the post reads. “1080p and 60fps are being used by the marketing teams in relation to gameplay on to the console portion. I’ve heard unconfirmed rumblings of 900p for the infamous hybrid part of the device.”

Furthermore, the post claims that price points of $299.99 (around Rs. 20,000) and $399.99 (roughly Rs. 27,000) will be present. The base price being the former and a bundle price being the latter. What comes in the bundle is at this point of time unknown.

(Also see: Nintendo to End Wii U Production. Possible Nintendo NX Release Date Soon?)

It seems that the console will launch with four games, and a strong co-branding effort with a Mario launch title. Further alluding to the possibility of it being a handheld console (as if we didn’t need yet another confirmation) is the phrase “Interact with your game on the go” being seen on marketing materials.

Although some of this would be in line with what’s been leaked in the past, we’d still recommend you take this with a grain of salt. Reason being, while the moderators on the NX subreddit have taken utmost care in confirming the source’s identity and veracity of information, in an age where elaborate 3D-printed controller hoaxes are rife, it’s always best to temper expectations.

Nonetheless, hopefully Nintendo decides to launch the NX or whatever its final name is in India. But if past experiences are to be believed, that seems unlikely.

Apple Is Said to Plan Improved Cloud Services by Unifying Teams

Apple Is Said to Plan Improved Cloud Services by Unifying Teams

Apple Inc. plans to unify its separate Internet services groups into a single campus to better compete with Alphabet Inc.’s Google and Amazon.com Inc. in the cloud, according to people familiar with the plans.

Apple cloud services teams run by executive Eddy Cue, including Siri, Maps, iCloud, Apple Pay, Apple News and parts of iTunes and Apple Music, will move together into the company’s existing Infinite Loop campus in Cupertino, California, the people said. Currently, most Apple services are developed separately from each other in office parks rented out in other parts of Cupertino and Sunnyvale, California.

The current structure contributes to software bugs and slow product development, the people said. Bringing the teams together at a single, dedicated campus is designed to improve growth of the services business and fight competition from Google and Amazon, the people added. They did not want to be identified talking about private Apple plans. Apple declined to comment.

As iPhone growth slows and Apple goes behind the scenes to develop new hardware, the services business has been a bright spot. It grew almost 20 percent in the third quarter and may soon pass the Mac and iPad as Apple’s second-largest revenue source. Still, Apple’s cloud services have been criticized by users because of technical issues and a lack of new features. The company also stumbled in 2008 with MobileMe and in 2012 with Maps.

Cloud Space
Space for the cloud teams at the current headquarters will begin to open as Apple inches toward the launch of Apple Campus 2, a futuristic, spherical structure with multiple floors of open work space. Apple will begin moving employees there in 2017, Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook said in March. Apple broke ground on the new campus in 2013, following a well-documented announcement by company co-founder Steve Jobs in 2011.

While many Apple executives want to relocate their teams to the new campus, Cue thinks unifying at the old campus is a suitable way to improve his organization, one of the people said.

A committee of Apple managers is working on the plan to reorganize Apple across its current and future locations. Recently that plan has changed, according to a person familiar with the discussions. Apple originally expected up to 13,000 employees at the new campus. Now that number will increase by thousands and Apple is adjusting internal office space accordingly, the person said.

The new building features open floor plans and few traditional offices. While some of Apple’s senior vice presidents are expected to see their offices move over to the new campus – less than a five minute drive from the current headquarters – management must be at a vice president level or above to get a formal office, one of the people said. Previous plans included office space for senior directors, who report to vice presidents.

The new campus will be made up of bench seating, long work tables, and open cubicle spaces, potentially irking employees used to quiet office environments, two people briefed on the new campus’s plans said.

Apple’s Pie
Apple is also reorganizing its cloud computing resources to bolster its services business. The company is moving its infrastructure – things like software to process Siri queries and Apple Music downloads – onto a single, Apple-made system, according to people familiar with the matter. Code-named Pie, the platform gives Apple more control and may speed up load times.

Apple has begun moving over parts of Siri, the iTunes Store, and Apple News to the new platform, one of the people said. Apple plans to move other services, including Maps, to its new system over the next few years. Apple has also developed an internal photo storage system dubbed McQueen to gradually end its reliance on Google and Amazon servers, the people said.

The company recently indicated it is taking the cloud more seriously by hiring former Time Warner Cable executive Peter Stern as a vice president leading cloud services.

Is the Mobile App Already Dead? comScore Says We’re Nearing “Peak App” (INFOGRAPHIC)

Is the Mobile App Market Already Dead? comScore Says We’re Nearing “Peak App” MomentBarring Facebook, Messenger, Instagram and other hugely successful names, many apps are actually rarely used or even downloaded by mobile device owners. Yet many businesses spend considerable time and resources creating apps to engage customers.

A new study from comScore now says we’re nearing the “Peak App” moment, which suggests businesses should revisit their mobile app strategy.

Highlights of the comScore Report

Astonishingly, the comScore (NASDAQ:SCOR) study reveals 49 percent of smartphone users do not download any apps per month. About 24 percent of users install one or two apps over the same period.

Those who install more than five apps a month are more likely to be males aged between 18 and 44 years old, and they live in cities such as Los Angeles, Miami, San Francisco and Houston.

Interestingly, the comScore report isn’t the only recent study to highlight the declining popularity of mobile apps. Another study by app tracker SensorTower has also revealed an average 20 percent drop in downloads in the U.S.

What This Change in the Mobile App Market Means for Your Business

Declining popularity of mobile apps doesn’t come as a surprise. Think about it. How many apps do you install and actually use on your mobile device?

It’s also a choice that many users are making today because installing too many apps is inconvenient and unnecessary. So if you want to go ahead and build an app, you have to give your customers a very good reason to install it.

Vik Patel, CEO of Detroit-based Future Hosting says, “If we were to ask users to install an app, there would have to be a very good reason. Good reasons include a genuine need for access to on-device features like the camera or accelerometer, or a requirement for graphical capabilities available only to native applications.”

Building an app requires both time and money. It’s therefore important for you to explore all options before making a decision. Does your business really need an app? Is it enough for you to just optimize your website for mobile? Can you instead focus more on engaging customers on social media?

These are some questions that you must answer before making  a decision to invest in creating a mobile app.

At the same time, a mobile app can work really well for your business if you have the right strategy in place. If you are a small store owner, for instance, you can leverage your mobile app to implement loyalty programs or push notifications to drive footfalls.

“The total number of people using your apps and the time they are spending on average, those two combined is how you should measure the potential of an app to generate a lot of revenue down the line,”advises Fabien Pierre-Nicolas, VP of marketing at app analytics firm App Annie.

Small Business Apple Users, MacOS Sierra Is Here

Small Business Apple Users, MacOS Sierra Is Here

While Apple might not admit it, the company seems to have a clear preference for iOS, leaving macOS and its users a bit under appreciated. But the company is slowly adding new capabilities to its desktop operating system, making its latest major release, macOS Sierra, the closest it has come so far to an iPhone or iPad.

After the new iOS 10 was announced earlier this month, along with the new iPhone 7 and other products, it was finally the Mac’s turn. And just to make sure it didn’t feel left behind, Apple added some of the features you can now find on iOS to Sierra.

For business users, the new additions are incremental changes that will improve some of the tasks you perform on your PC, but there is nothing groundbreaking. Here are some of the features you will find in the new OS.

Key Business Features of MacOS Sierra

Siri

After some prodding and pressure from Microsoft’s Cortana in Windows, Apple has relented and Siri is now available on Sierra. If you haven’t used the current batch of AI assistants, you will find they can really make your workflow run much smoother.

In addition to asking Siri for directions, the time, and the weather, you can ask for help adjusting system preferences, finding documents, sending messages and email, looking up information, searching a user’s photo library, and more.

Apple Pay

If you want to pay for something on a website with Apple Pay, there are around 300,000 participating websites that will let you complete your purchase with Touch ID on iPhone 6 or newer devices and Apple Watch.

Apple says it doesn’t share your credit or debit card information with online merchants and it uses strong encryption to protect all communication between your device and Apple Pay servers.

This can really simplify the way you pay for the supply and services for your small business.

Picture in Picture

The PIP feature, which has been available on the iPad previously, lets you watch a video from a Web page by extracting it and placing it on your desktop without the other content of the website. If you switch to other desktop applications, the video continues to play.

Continuity

Even the smallest businesses may have more than one device, and with the continuity feature Apple introduced last year, your files can now be synced across your phone, tablet, laptop and desktop with the help of iCloud. So if you make an update on your iPhone, when you go home and use your Mac, you will have the latest changes.

This is a great feature for any business, because it simplifies your workflow by not having to go over any changes you make at your office or home.

Photos

The feature that is getting the most attention in Photos is Memories. It can group pictures and videos from your library based on times, locations and people, and create short slide shows based on the selections.

MacOS Sierra - Photos

It uses advanced computer vision to identify faces, objects and scenes in images so you can search by who or what is in it.

Mail

Mail has a new quick filter that lets you look at messages that you haven’t read, as well as messages with attachments, flagged messages, and messages that you have been CC’d on, are addressed to you specifically or are from VIPs.

If your business email address is out of control, this is one way to ensure you get the most relevant emails.

Notes

Collaboration is on everyone’s list of options when it comes to functionality, and Notes has a real-time collaboration feature that lets you invite a user with Apple ID so you can view and edit the document together. You can send the invite using Twitter, Facebook, Mail, Messages, AirDrop, and more.

Optimized Storage

Optimized storage can detect when your hard drive is running out of room and it automatically frees up space on your computer by sending the files to the cloud if they haven’t been used in some time. The feature also gets rid of junk files.

Universal Clipboard

You can now copy content from an app on your iPhone or iPad and paste it into another app on another Apple device, which in this case would be a desktop or laptop. And with iCloud Desktop and Documents, you can access files on your Desktop from an iPhone and iPad.

MacOS Sierra - Universal Clipboard

More Control for Autocorrect

You now have more granular control when it comes to autocorrect. Whether it is correcting spelling, capitalizing words or adding a period at the end of a sentence you can keep or disable the behavior you want.

More Choices for Encryption

The Apple File System (APFS) encryption on Sierra uses AES-XTS and AES-CBC ciphers for three kinds of native encryption, including no encryption, single-key file and metadata encryption, and multi-key encryption. The multi-key encryption can perform metadata, per-file and per-extent encryption.

With security a persistent problem for anyone with a digital presence, this is a great way to make sure the information on your Mac is protected at all times.

Auto Unlock

This is a security feature which according to Apple will make Macs more secure for users that have an iPhone or Apple Watch. It pairs your Mac computer with your mobile device using Bluetooth and whenever you are nearby, it detects your presence and unlocks your computer.

MacOS Sierra - Auto Unlock

If you are tired of passwords, and who isn’t these days, this is another option.

Availability

The new operating system is available as a free update from the Mac App Store, and it supports all Macs introduced since late 2009. However, Apple has warned some features may not be available in all regions or languages. You can go here to find out more.

7 Ways Perfection is Killing Your Business – or Is It 6?

Problems with Perfection: 7 Ways Perfection is Killing Your Business

Can we ever truly be perfect, in anything?  Possibly, but that perfection is often short-lived.  As a society, we are always seeking ‘perfection’, and as such, we are often quick to label something as perfect, even when it is not.  A perfect stranger, a perfect storm, a perfect match or a perfect crime perhaps.

But if striving for perfection is part of your business personality, it could be damaging your ability to reach the point of product or solution launch; therefore your problems with perfection could be harming your ability to innovate.

Heck, when I launched most of my blogs or businesses, they were a mess, but they got out there and generated the buzz and citations needed to succeed. SEJ, which after three years became a six figure blog, had a disastrous template design upon launch, but I needed to get it out there at the right time, and then be flexible and nimble enough to make changes. Now, it’s a leading influencer in the world of digital marketing.

If you are running your business trying to adhere to this impossible standard, then you may be in trouble.

Here are seven problems with perfection that are killing your business.

Beware these Problems with Perfection

Makes You Slow to Market

In marketing strategy, there is an advantage known as FMA or first-mover advantage, where the first to market often gains a great initial advantage over competitors. Recent literature has suggested that that first-movers may be at a disadvantage, failing around 47 percent of the time, with ‘fast-followers’ (8 percent failure rate) being the real market winners because they can improve on newly launched products or services and reduce cost and inefficiencies.

No matter if you are first to market, or join slightly after, being one of the first is crucial to business success.  Unless you do something significantly different than any major competitor, and these are few and far between, then you must launch products or services effectively and efficiently.

Perfectionists often obsess over every minute detail, often delaying products and/or launches, which ultimately cause decreases in success metrics.

Founder of Linkedin, Reid Hoffman, said “If you are not embarrassed by the first version of your product, you’ve launched too late.”

Obviously, your products and strategies should be well vetted and tested, but lack of speed kills.  Accept that perfection is unobtainable and set realistic launch goals.  Pick a small group of trusted associates or customers to test new products, and provide feedback.  You can always make adjustments and improvements along the way.  Remember the first cars weren’t even sold with windshield wipers because no one ever thought people would take them out in the rain.  As your customers inform you what changes or improvements need to be made, you can address them. Proving your use and delivering on your promises are more important to customers than perfection.

Robs Your Project of its Dynamism

Sometimes, trying to make something perfect can remove the energy and desire.  Think about the best presentation you have ever seen, or maybe just one with 28 million views.

You can practice a presentation 100 times, and still not be prepared for a question, or something that happens in that room, up at that table or podium.  So why stress over it?  Giving a presentation is as much about presenting yourself as it is content or facts.

People want to see someone they can relate to, and as it is often said, no one is perfect.  You should always properly prepare for a presentation, but don’t sit in the back of the room tinkering for perfection, walk around and introduce yourself.  Start a few conversations to see if you can find some interesting details to include in your presentation.

Show your audience that you are aware of them, that you can relate to them, and that you are just like them, a normal non-perfect individual that has something extremely important to convey to them.  That will go much further than an extra bullet point on a screen full of text that no one will read.

Keeps You Waiting for that Perfect Opportunity

Are you the kind of person that is always looking for the perfect opportunity?  You’ve probably noticed a running theme by now, but no opportunity is perfect.  It is generally more a matter of pros and cons.  If you gain more pros by engaging in a new opportunity, you should generally go for it.  Always be on the lookout for new opportunities for your business.  Come up with a uniform system of evaluating each one.

Select the ones that make the most sense, and tackle any hurdles as they come along.  Not every opportunity is going to work out, but some of them will, and when you look back you’ll see how imperfect the situation was at the beginning and the steps you took to improve it.

This strategy will also help you evolve as a business person as you learn what works and what doesn’t.  As Wayne Gretzky said, “you miss 100 percent of the shots you don’t take.”

Sabotages Confidence and Self-Belief

One of the most encompassing deficiencies of perfection is that it can sabotage confidence and self-belief.  If you are afraid to launch a product or service, or pitch a new strategy until you think it is perfect, and then when you do, it is criticized, it can be crushing.  I’m sure you’ve probably been on social media lately, and if so, you know that someone has a comment for everything.  If you own or run a business, commenting is what you hire people to do, and if you are an employee, it is what you get paid for.  However, if you think something is perfect, and are told it is not, it can ruin your confidence, and this can stifle productivity.

Remember, innovations are built by teams, and no success has been free from criticism.  Use it to constantly improve.  Perfection can be something that is striven for, but rarely obtained.  Don’t dwell on criticism, use it to refine and enhance.

Prevets Your Getting From Start to Finish

In many phases of business, things are constantly evolving and never actually finished.  Think about a business plan, or target customers.  You should always be updating plans and trying to obtain new customers, but it is important to set milestones and plans that can actually be finished.  It will give you a sense of accomplishment and vigor and inspire your next cycle of innovation.

Perfectionists are often cited as not being able to finish anything because there is always something that can be changed to try and reach that unobtainable level of perfection.  Think about how this article started. Speed is an asset that perfection doesn’t allow.

Your milestones should be realistic times or events that allow you to move to the next step.  Be sure to evaluate and address areas for improvement in each subsequent step, as you try to achieve a more perfect outcome.

Destroys Vital Conditions for Creativity

Creativity and curiosity are born from chaos.  Always trying to be perfect eliminates your inclination to take risks and innovate.  You need to be creative to thrive in business.  There was a time when people said selling books online was crazy because users were scared to use credit cards on the web, the shipping costs would eat up any money that was saved and people would have to wait a week for a book that they could have today at any store or public library.

You probably already know where this is going, but today Amazon is rated as the tenth most profitable brand in the world.  They certainly had their growing pains, but used feedback from mistakes to grow into the behemoth they are today.

Don’t be afraid to embrace chaos.  Again, striving for perfection can certainly be a goal, but it is often created from bedlam.  Make sure you get uncomfortable from time to time; it can help you create something you can’t yet fathom, but could fundamentally improve your business.

Nothing’s Perfect

Especially this posting.  The title stated you were going to get 7 ways perfection is killing your business, but there were only 6.  I just wanted to leave some room for improvement, as you should too, because nothing is perfect, or more perfect.

Strive for consistency, not perfection and your business will thrive no matter the environment, product or competitor.

Have some more ways that perfection could be killing your business? Please feel free to leave them in the comments below.

What is Amazon Launchpad and How Can I Use It for My Startup?

What is Amazon Launchpad and How Can I Use It for My Startup?

When it comes to eCommerce, Amazon is the undisputed king. The sprawling digital marketplace sells over 200 million products per year in America alone, and it’s consequently evolved into a crucial sales platform for businesses of all shapes and sizes.

But it can be understandably difficult for tiny startups to stand out and prosper on Amazon. That’s why last year the company decided to introduce a pioneering platform to help showcase ambitious startups and their innovative products.

Dubbed Amazon Launchpad, the service also provides a wide array of useful tools for small businesses, and pairs them with like-minded organisations in order to foster growth and collaboration. Launchpad relies upon partners like Kickstarter, Indiegogo and Y Combinator to help identify potential — and although the platform may not be right for everyone, the benefits are worth considering.

What is Amazon Launchpad?

Amazon Launchpad is a unique platform that serves two core purposes. On one hand, it’s a marketplace within a marketplace that enables customers to sift through a range of cutting-edge and innovative items produced by vetted startups. On the other hand, Launchpad is an incredibly useful service point for small businesses in need of a helping hand.

Although Amazon provides a marketplace for scores of companies, Launchpad vendors are given a bit of special treatment. Launchpad product listings are inherently more user-friendly, and allow startups to weave all-encompassing, custom narratives surrounding their products with the help of larger images, videos and more space to write. Launchpad vendors also enjoy more opportunities to get noticed through in-house advertising and a special widget on Amazon’s storefront landing page.

Elsewhere, Launchpad offers fledgling startups plenty of logistical support via its Services Hub. The hub is essentially a space for participating vendors to seek out help from colleagues and more established service providers in order to bolster productivity. Help categories range from prototyping and manufacturing to funding and sales, and all participating service providers are guaranteed to respond to startup queries within seven days.

How Can I Get Involved?

Launchpad is admittedly a little bit selective in terms of who it takes on. At present, Amazon prioritizes startups funded by crowdfunding platforms, venture capital firms and other startup accelerators that are already part of the company’s existing network — which includes names like Kickstarter, Andreesen Horowitz and Hardware Club. That said, Amazon has said it is willing to consider startups supported by companies outside the network on a case-by-case basis. Existing Amazon sellers can also apply for the program.

In order to apply for Launchpad, you must first register as an Amazon vendor and upload some basic product information onto the site. You’ll then be asked to confirm an initial order and ship an initial load of products to Amazon’s fulfillment centers. That order will essentially be used by the site to evaluate whether there’s a genuine demand for your company’s products.

If approved to join Launchpad, vendors won’t be getting a free ride. They will be expected to pay Amazon an incremental referral fee at five percent on top of the site’s standard referral fee on each item sold. That additional fee applies to all seller selections, and is charged on the total sum paid for the item by the buyer — including taxes.

Is Launchpad Right for My Business?

Amazon Launchpad provides a unique set of benefits for budding startups. Not only does the program drastically bolster a company’s visibility on the world’s best known eCommerce marketplace, but it also helps connect startups with all of the resources and service providers they’ll need in order to establish themselves. That saves small business owners a whole lot of time and hassle.

But that’s not to say the platform is without its own set of drawbacks. First and foremost, as a Launchpad vendor you’ll be expected to take part in the eCommerce giant’s ‘Fulfillment by Amazon’ service — which essentially means risking shipping all of your inventory off to Amazon wholesale before a customer has even had a chance to buy anything. That’s pretty standard practice for larger, more established companies; however, it could potentially cut a slice out of a startup’s initial profit margin.

That being said, a vast majority of startups would likely argue this is a small price to pay for the all-encompassing support that Launchpad and Amazon’s global fulfillment network provide. At the end of the day, no two businesses are alike — so you’ll have to look at the pros and cons to figure out whether Launchpad is right for your startup.

Apple Is Sued Over Unresponsive iPhone 6 Touchscreens

Apple Is Sued Over Unresponsive iPhone 6 Touchscreens

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Design defect causes the phones’ touchscreens to become unresponsive
  • Apple has long been aware of the defect but has refused to fix it
  • Apple accused of fraud and violating California consumer protection laws

Apple has been sued by owners of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus smartphones who say a design defect causes the phones’ touchscreens to become unresponsive, making them unusable.

According to a proposed nationwide class-action lawsuit filed on Saturday, Apple has long been aware of the defect, which often surfaces after a flickering gray bar appears atop the touchscreens, but has refused to fix it.

The plaintiffs linked the problem to Apple’s decision not to use a metal “shield” or “underfill” to protect the relevant parts, as it did on versions of the iPhone 5.

“The iPhones are not fit for the purpose of use as smartphones because of the touchscreen defect,” according to the complaint filed in federal court in San Jose, California.

Todd Cleary of California, Jun Bai of Delaware and Thomas Davidson of Pennsylvania are the named plaintiffs in the lawsuit, which accuses Apple of fraud and violating California consumer protection laws. They seek unspecified damages.

Apple did not immediately respond on Monday to a request for comment.

Problems with iPhone 6 touchscreens were described online last week by iFixit, which labeled the issue “Touch Disease”.

That company sells repair parts and has previously analyzed other Apple products.

Apple, based in Cupertino, California, sold 166.4 million iPhones, generating $108.5 billion (roughly Rs. 728,089 crores) of net sales, in the first nine months of its current fiscal year.

The case is Davidson et al v. Apple Inc, U.S. District Court, Northern District of California, No. 16-04942.

A few devices will receive the update over-the-air (OTA) gradually over the coming week, while some are set to receive it in the ‘near future.’ In any case, all eligible devices can install MIUI 8 right now, byfollowing the steps here.

x

MIUI 8 was unveiled alongside the Xiaomi Mi Max in India, and the company had then promised for the stable build to release in August. Keeping its promise, the MIUI 8 with all of its new features is rolling out, and here is everything new that is arriving with the MIUI 8 Global Stable ROM.

1) Photos
The MIUI 8 brings in a host of new improvements to the Gallery like the introduction of Mi Cloud Photo sync. It keeps low resolution images locally, and uploads the original full size image to the cloud. Xiaomi also tweaked the way panorama shots are seen on the smartphone, and instead of the cropped square version, MIUI 8 displays them horizontally across the screen. It has also introduced a new video editing option where users can trim videos easily and add video effects. MIUI 8 brings quick sharing to the Gallery app, where the user can share a picture on different platforms by just swiping up.

(Also see: Xiaomi India on the Redmi 3s, MIUI 8, and Mi VR India Launch)

2) Quick Ball
The Quick Ball is nothing but a hovering button that stays on the display screen at all times. Users can customise five shortcuts into the ball, and it reminds you very much of Apple’s Assistive Touch. The Quick Ball button also shows up on the lock screen, enabling users to use to shortcuts even on a locked smartphone.

3) Dual apps
Dual apps is a very nifty feature as it brings the ability to have two instances of any app running on the smartphone – such as two instances of WhatsApp. This essentially means you can run two separate WhatsApp accounts on one smartphone.

miui8_dualapps.jpg4) Second Space
The Second Space feature lets you do the work of two smartphones on one. It lets you have two Google accounts that you can switch whenever you please. By switching on the Second Space feature, and setting up a new account, users can keep their business and personal accounts separate, but on one smartphone. It allows users to switch between accounts through a Switch app, that shows up once the Second Space feature is enabled.

5) Scrolling screenshots
This should come in really handy for all the screenshot lovers out there. A screenshot is typically restricted to capture what is visible on the screen at that particular time, cropping out all the other content on a webpage. With MIUI 8, an entire webpage, no matter the length can be taken as a screenshot. To use this feature, press the Volume down and the power key at the same time. An animated icon pops up on the top right for five seconds. Click it immediately, and options to expand, edit or share show up. Click on expand, scroll up the space you want to screenshot, and press stop when you’re done.

miui8_screenshots.jpg(Also see: How to Manually Download and Install MIUI 8 Right Now)

6) Caller ID and Dialler
With MIUI 8, Xiaomi has integrated caller ID into the system, thereby eliminating the need for third-party apps to perform the function. The dialler now lets you type in T9 Hindi directly from the dial pad, and it even enables T9 Business Search. This feature shows contact information of popular businesses around the area, irrespective if the number is stored or not.

7) Calculator
The Calculator app also sees a major redesign. Apart from doing the math, the app now will even convert weight, currency, and temperature.

miui8_calculator.jpg8) Messages
The caller ID integration expands into text messaging as well. MIUI 8 will detect a message, and if a text arrives from your bank (for example), it will show the name of the bank with a profile photo to make it look prettier. For example, HDFC Bank’s SMS won’t show up as VM-HDFC, but will instead show up automatically as just HDFC complete with a contact photo icon. The Messages app also introduced third-party integration, which means it will prompt users to do various functions depending on the message. A movie ticket confirmation from BookMyShow will allow users to add a reminder, and a low data alert from a carrier should prompt the user to recharge using one of the installed recharge apps. For this to work, Xiaomi has currently partnered with MobiKwik in India.

9) Notes app
The new Notes app in MIUI 8 sees a slight change in design, and can be seen in a grid format. It has a new Memo template feature that gives you a better design to work with, and even allows you to share on micro-blogging sites as is. It also allows users to set a password, or fingerprint access to a note for better privacy.

Xiaomi has partnered with Hungama to introduce latest soundtracks as ringtones for users. The ringtones will be made available free of cost. The company has also partnered with many other companies to provide many new wallpaper options, and because of its Theme Contest held in India, MIUI 8 will also see many new themes as well.

Reliance Jio SIM Is the New iPhone, WhatsApp-Facebook Integration, and More News This Week

Reliance Jio SIM Is the New iPhone, WhatsApp-Facebook Integration, and More News This Week

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Reliance Jio SIM became the most-sought after item
  • The year-old iPhone 6s beat the Galaxy Note 7 in speed tests
  • Many Dropbox users’ passwords were leaked

Missed out on any tech news this week? You’ve come to the right place, as we’ve picked out the top stories we read over the entire week. First up – a word of warning to all Dropbox users. You might need to change your password – a leaked credential cache means that at least some users’ passwords were compromised. And if you use the same password on other sites too – which you should never, ever do – then change those as well.

The big story of the week was the mad rush for Reliance Jio SIM cards, which have probably become the most sought-after tech-related item in the country. First, there were reports that anyone with a 4G phone can now get their hands on Jio SIM, though not every Reliance store seems to be honouring the offer. Then, Reliance officially extended the offer to owners of Asus and Panasonic smartphones, followed by four more OEMs later in the week. All this just seem to heighten demand for the Reliance Jio SIM, as evident by queues in retail stores across the country, reminiscent of iPhone launches in other countries.

The Reliance Jio rollout continues to bounce along merrily with no real visibility – apparently Mukesh Ambani met the telecom secretary to discuss Jio’s rollout plans, but details are unclear. Other telcos are not happy, and are alleging that the tests Reliance Jio is running are just commercial operations to scoop up useres.

Also, while Reliance started off by offering SIM cards to its employees, RIL is apparently now asking staff to stop using other telcos – Airtel is said to be the most affected by this decision.

The controversy of the week was probably the results of a test comparing the real world speed difference between the iPhone 6s and the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 – Samsung’s new phone was bestedby the year-old iPhone 6s. Interestingly, another study showed that the iPhone and iPad had higher failure rates than Android counterparts. But the coolest news of the week might be that the world’s first self driving taxis have started operations in Singapore.

Right at the start of the week, the Gionee S6s was launched. Samsung launched the Tizen-basedSamsung Z2. It is the first Tizen smartphone with 4G LTE support, and was wholly developed in Bengaluru.

Also launched this week were the Meizu U10 and Meizu U20 budget Android smartphones, which come with fingerprint scanners. There was also the Intex Cloud Tread, with 2GB of RAM and a hexa-core SoC,launched at Rs. 4,999, and the Vivo Y21L with 4G VoLTE at Rs. 7,490.

Xiaomi closed out the week in launches, with the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 in China, which comes with a 4100mAh battery, and runs on a Helio X20 SoC.

Meanwhile, if you’re in the market for a flagship, then Samsung has an offer for you – it’s cut the prices for the Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge. The phones are now cheaper by Rs. 5,000 each. Xiaomi also took a cue from Samsung, and has cut the price of the Xiaomi Mi 5 by Rs. 2,000, down to Rs. 22,999.

In case you’re using a Nexus device, good news – the Android 7.0 Nougat rollout has started for Nexus devices. Unlike Apple’s iOS, which is released to all users in a single release, Android has a much slower rollout – which is why the biggest chunk of users is still on version 4.4, KitKat, and only 15.2 percent of users are on the previous version of Android, version 6.0 or Marshmallow. Apart from the Nexus phones, the update is now also headed to some Sony phones so far.

It was also revealed that Google’s new VR platform, Daydream, is going to launch soon.

While it’s been a good week for launches, other news from around the world and India had its ups and downs. At a company townhall, Flipkart’s Executive Chairman Sachin Bansal addressed employees to reassure them about layoffs – hundreds were fired in one swoop – and admitted that his removal from the CEO position was also performance related.

Speaking of CEOs, Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg started his week by giving away $95 million in Facebook shares to charity. Zuckerberg plans to donate 99 percent of his Facebook shares to the Chang Zuckerberg Initiative which will focus on charitable causes around the world, similar to the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation. At the same time, Facebook launched the Lifestage app, targeted at video loving teenagers. This iPhone app allows teens to watch clips about the life of their classmates, or make short clips themselves.

But not all is good in the house of Facebook this week. WhatsApp – which Facebook bought two years ago, updated its terms of service for the first time since 2012, to say that it’s now going to share your phone numbers with the social network, though you can opt-out of this.

Meanwhile, in case you’re wondering how successful Edge, Microsoft’s replacement for Internet Explorer, has been… well, the company is now offering people money to use the browser. Opera was also in the news this week with the launch of Opera VPN for Android that gives free, ad-supported, unlimited VPN access to users.

One interesting piece of news from the telecom world – Trai has now permitted the validity of mobile data packs to be for one year. This is a pretty big step because earlier the longest validity you could get was 90 days, limiting a customer’s options. Airtel and Vodafone also introduced e-KYC for SIM activation with Aadhar verification, which could lead to instant verification of SIM cards. And BSNL has added an unlimited 3G plan for Rs. 1,099. You can also get a 10GB plan for Rs. 549 now.

Speaking of news from India, the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) rollout has now started, and bank-enabled apps are arriving in the Play Store. This could have major impact on e-commerce, and mobile wallets, as the UPI basically allows you to make a bank transfer as easily as you’d send an SMS.

There were also some leaks at Sony that tell us more about how the video games giant is moving forward. A PlayStation Europe leak revealed PlayStation Now for PC – it’s Sony’s game streaming service, and if you have a 5Mbps Internet connection, you’ll be able to play PS4 games without a PS4. The leak was confirmed later in the week.

There was also a leak of the PS4 Slim that shows an all-matte finish. With the Slim and the Neo, Sony will be refreshing with two consoles, an interesting move that shows how the console industry has changed with this generation.

On the other side of things, Halo 5: Forge for Windows has a release date now – the map editor for Halo 5 will arrive on Windows 10 PC on September 8, with new content from the Xbox One version.

We also heard from Titanfall’s developer – who addressed the beta test that we described as’disappointing’. The developers say it’s slower to make the game more accessible, and easier to learn as you play.

Pokemon Go Now Available to Download in UK, Germany – When is India?

Pokemon Go Now Available to Download in UK, Germany - When is India?

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Pokemon Go is now available in Germany
  • This should result in an international release soon
  • Some speculate a Thursday release for the game worldwide

Earlier in the week we reported that Pokemon Go was slated for a worldwide release soon. It seems that Niantic and The Pokemon Company are sticking to this. Reason being, the game is finally available in the UK and Germany. This is in addition to Australia, New Zealand, and the US which got it last week. This means we should see a roll out to other regions like India, China, and Japan soon enough.

“UK Trainers, the wait is over. #PokemonGO is now officially available to be installed from Google Play or iTunes,” tweeted the official Pokemon Go account. The version available is the name out in other markets such as Germany, Australia, New Zealand, and the US, version 1.02 on iOS and version 0.29.2 on Android.

According to the Pokemon Go subreddit, users in Germany are able to access the game officially.

“You can now download Pokemon Go in Germany from the App Store. First you have to uninstall your current Version then reinstall it from the AppStore and use the same Login as before to continue with everything that you already got,” the post reads before explaining how eager fans can bypass potential issues if they obtained the game earlier.

“You can either just use the version you already have and just update it from the App Store without reinstalling OR you have to uninstall it because the App Store will tell you that it is still “not available in your country” after you uninstalled it you can refresh the Store and it should be available.”

Some speculate a Thursday launch the world over is in the offing given Apple’s App Store policies.

“The App Store usually refreshes with new releases and big updates on Thursday to enable users the entire weekend to browse and purchase,” a developer tells Gadgets 360.

As per The Wall Street Journal, you can expect it in your country soon. It claims that “people familiar with plans for the game said it would likely be available in other regions, including Europe, Japan, and other Asian nations within a few days.”

This bodes well for an official Indian release. Even more so when you consider that previous Nintendo efforts such as Miitomo have ignored the country altogether.
