Top 7 Web Design Tips to Help Your Website Load Faster

web design tips

When it comes to business marketing, it is important to ensure these days to have a prominent online presence. And for that, having a website is a must. It can be a great marketing tool for your business. But what’s the use of owning a business website if it has no visitors? For your business to perform properly, you need to ensure that people are attracted to your website on a regular basis. There might be several ways to ensure this. And one of the most important among them is surely how you have designed your website.

The primary aim of a well-planned web design strategy is to create a unique user experience. It must be an experience that’s unparalleled and that will make the visitors return to your website time and again. And for that, it’s essential to have a website that loads fast. But how can you alter your Web design to get the best results in terms of speed of your website?

Here’s a quick look.

Make the Website Lighter

That’s the first thing you need to do. One of the major reasons behind long loading time is a heavy Web page. You have to get rid of all that’s trash. Remember, the smaller a Web page is, the faster it will load. If there are images and videos that are absolutely not relevant to your content, delete them immediately.

Getting rid of something that’s not needed is surely the hardest thing. So, take your time. Find out which components are actually adding value to your website. But ensure that you remove from your Web page everything that’s not necessary or does not add any value to you or to the visitors.

Compress the Web Page

A full size Web page is sure to take a lot of time to load. A compressed website, on the other hand, is faster. Which compression algorithm do you want to use? You can have multiple options, such as:

  • Deflate
  • Gzip

Compressing the Web page ensures that the server does not need to send a lot of data to the page while it’s loading. So, it is going to take shorter time to load.

Split Large Pages into Shorter, Multiple Ones

Why have websites become slower these days? One of the primary reasons is the increase in the size of the Web pages. Are most of the pages of your website too long? Then they are sure to take a bit of time to load. There’s no way you can help it, except one. Just split the long Web pages into multiple pages that are shorter in length.

Doing this will help you get rid of that long scroll bar on the side of the page. Moreover, the attention span of most people these days is pretty short. Having multiple pages with less information on each will help significantly to cater to these people perfectly.

Use Single Code Source for All Web Pages

Have the same script on a number of pages of your website? Just wait before you create separate scripts for each page. Once you use separate scripts, the website will have to read them every time the pages are loaded. That will take a lot of time. Instead, use an external code, that is, you should use a single code source for all the pages. It will ensure that the code remains in the cache. Thus, the time taken for loading the scripts won’t be necessary anymore. This will help the page to load faster. And more so for pages with larger codes.

Keep the Coding Clean for Google

When it comes to coding, you will have to keep it clean. It is essential to write the JavaScript properly. Moreover, you will need to avoid using a lot of external resources. Ensure that the images are not too large. You should pay proper attention to the different attributes of Web design for your page. This is because, Google likes cleaner coding.

By following these steps, you will be able to help your website in terms of SEO. It will rank high with Google’s search engine results for relevant keywords and thus, generate more traffic. It is also important to make the codes smarter to ensure they can be easily read by the search engines. The HTML should also be simple enough. It is also essential to remove the duplicate scripts to make the Web page load faster.

Reduce the Extra White Space

White space is one of the most important components of Web design these days. It can give your website a unique look. It can also form different shapes on it. But are you using too much white space? This can also have a negative impact in terms of the page load time. Remember, the white space also adds up to at least a few bytes in terms of size. Hence, reducing this space means you can cut down on that size. So, it will be less for the server to load. The result: the pages of your website will load faster.

Optimize the Images

When you are creating a website, it is essential to include images there. It helps to enhance user experience. But make sure you use the right format for the image. There might be multiple options, such as:

  • Scaleable Vector Graphics (.SVG)
  • Portable Network Graphics (.PNG)
  • Graphic Interchange Format (.GIF)
  • Weppy (.WEBP)
  • Joint Photographic Experts Group (.JPEG or .JPG)

No matter which format you use, you will need to optimize the image for the web and compress it to ensure that it loads properly and fast.

A web page that takes a long time to load usually results in reduced user interest. It is essential for the Web page to load fast, so that the visitors remain interested in the topic.

9 Offers That Can Help You Boost Sales This Tax Season

040615 tax time

Tax season isn’t just about getting your return in time and all the commotion that goes with it; it’s also a great opportunity to boost sales. Tax-time promotions, offers and tie-ins can add some fun to this busy time of year and hopefully make you some money too!

Here are some ideas that you might want to use for your small business.

Use the Number “1040”

No one enjoys filling in Form 1040, but as a small business, the number has infinite promotional possibilities.

For example, if you own a restaurant or bar you could offer two dishes, meals, or drinks for $10.40. Retailers could mark down items to $10.40. Or online stores could offer a special promotion that starts at 10:40 or can only be redeemed with coupon code “1040.”

There are probably 1,040 other things small businesses could do along the same line.

Offer a Unique Product in Honor of Tax Day!

Whether it’s the “Tax Man Martini” or the “Uncle Sam Sandwich,” think of ways to offer unique, one-off items that have a tax day tie-in and charge $10.40 or $15 for it (as a nod to April 15).

Come Up With a “Taxing” Catchphrase

Last year, California Tortilla came up with the tagline “Queso Makes Life Less Taxing” and offered free chips and queso with any purchase on April 15.

Get the word out a few days ahead of time on social media and to your email subscribers. Line up some memes, images, and product photos to accompany the catchphrase and let customers know what’s being offered.

Offer a Tax-Free Service

Offer a tax-free dining or shopping experience for one-day only on April 15.

Position Your Offer as a Refund

We’re all hoping for a tax refund, so why not offer your customers one. Instead of the traditional “BOGO” offer, give them a refund when they buy two items in a certain range.

Help Your Customers Relax After Tax Season

Preparing taxes is complicated and stressful. Could your business offer something that can help customers wind down and relax after tax season? B and Bs and hotels could offer a “Tax-Free, Stress-Free Weekend Special.” Spa owners could offer a “Tax Day De-Stress Package.”

Offer an in-room credit (aka refund) or a special service for soothing “taxed” nerves.

Set Up a Pop-up Shop

Get out there among your taxpaying customers and hand out free samples of your products or services. Throw in a free shoulder massage, just for fun.

Run an Early Bird Campaign for Early Filers

Run a promo or special the morning of tax day and position it as a special promotion for those who already have their refunds.

Offer Tax Tips for Next Year

If you’re in the financial services industry, now is the time to start marketing your services. Offer customers a free consultation or product trial and tout how you can help them do a better job of filing next year.

The opportunities are endless. For more inspiration, check out this roundup of Tax Day Freebies, Promotions, Deals and Specials from Forbes, which features a selection of the best promos offered by businesses last year.

Facebook Messenger App Adds Data Saver Option to Help You Save Mobile Data

Facebook Messenger App Adds Data Saver Option to Help You Save Mobile Data

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The feature is currently available only on Android
  • Data Saver allows you to manually download images and videos
  • App automatically downloads images and videos on Wi-Fi

Following the lead of many other apps, Facebook’s Messenger app has now been updated to include the data saver options to help users save cellular data. Many browsers have had these options for a while, and recently, companies like Google and Shazam announced several optimisations to their apps to provide improved services in countries where connectivity is an issue.

As of now, the data saver option seems to have been just added to the Android version of the Facebook Messenger. However, as the feature is in a testing phase, we will have to wait and see if it eventually makes way to iOS or not.

The data saver option, as implemented by Facebook Messenger, essentially allows the users to manually download the images and videos that are sent to the users instead of the app downloading them automatically. In order to enable the option, you need to head to the account settings menu of the Messenger app and tap on Data Saver. Then you need to toggle-on the option with the same name. The app also updates you about the estimated mobile data saved from the feature.

When you are connected to a Wi-Fi network, the app will automatically download videos and pictures. The data saver option will help users use their cellular data more effectively and will likely prove to be cost-efficient.Earlier this month, Facebook rolled out option to enable end-to-end encryption on Messenger conversations. This update provides similar user privacy as available on company’s WhatsApp messaging service and was introduced to provide additional privacy to Messenger users. However, unlike WhatsApp, Messenger users are required to manually choose end-to-end encryption for every new conversation.

Can Fidgeting Help When Sitting Long Hours at Your Desk?

office space

Small business owners tend to be desk jockeys, what with all the paper (or computer) work associated with running the business.

Studies show that even the recommended cardio exercise for a half-hour two or three times a week may not sufficiently offset hours of sitting. Something about being motionless seems to increase problems with metabolism of glucose, which leads to Metabolic Syndrome and Diabetes.

Can fidgeting — a kind of tiny, but more frequent, exercise — help?

Leeds University in the U.K. has been studying associations between diet and cancer in the U.K. Women’s Cohort Study. This is a study of 12,778 women, ages 37-78 years old, which looks for all kinds of data on the health of women. Also gathered were averages of sitting time and overall fidgeting.

The women were followed for 12 years with routine health checks. The results of the fidgeting study werepublished in the September 23, 2015 online American Journal of Preventive Medicine.

To study the effects of fidgeting on sedentary people, the women were divided into groups with regard to fidgeting levels, time spent sitting, age, and education. Other things were factored in such as smoking, eating habits, and exercise, to single out the effect the single factor of fidgeting might have on mortality.

The results showed a significant decrease in mortality among those who were moderate to high-level fidgeters. Thin people tend to fidget much more than obese people and women with more education placed higher on the fidgeting index. In the discussion part of the paper, researchers revealed:

“We found that fidgeting modified the association between sitting time and mortality, independently of a range of covariates including physical activity level. We replicated existing findings that longer sitting times were associated with increased risk of all-cause mortality, even among those meeting physical activity recommendations, but did not see this association in medium and high fidgeting groups.”

This is good news for the millions who feel chained to their desks. Getting exercise while working on spreadsheets and emails, what could be easier? No sweating, no pounding heart, no need for a shower or special exercise monitors. It would just be a matter of building a habit.

Everybody has their own style of fidgeting: be it wiggling their feet, wringing their hands, or kicking their legs. Perhaps adding shoulder shrugs can help with the neck pain that frequently bothers computer users.

The mechanism by which fidgeting helps combat the effects of being sedentary is still unknown but the overall impact seems clear. So fidget away.

Dealing With Employee Procrastination: Can Science Help?

daydreaming

Scientific studies have indicated that procrastination seems to be a conflict between two parts of the brain: the fun loving limbic system and the sensible prefrontal cortex. In a choice of after work activities, kicking back with a beer and TV usually wins out over going to the gym. Or you get on the computer to work on the budget, but think, “Hmm, I’ll just check my twitter account.”

“We all do it; it’s part of our nature,”  Piers Steel, a psychologist at the University of Calgary and a leading researcher in procrastination, says in an article in Discover Magazine. “You never want the same cues for play and for work,” because when it comes to a choice, work will lose almost every time. Steel also adds, “Sometimes just a minute or two delay of the temptation makes you far more likely to make a rational choice.” He’s designing programs that put in a delay of 20 seconds before accessing such distractions as email or Twitter.

Banks have taken notice of this research. An article published in the Journal of Marketing Research, “Increasing Saving Behavior Through Age-Progressed Renderings of the Future Self” has inspired the use of that very tactic to motivate people to save more in their retirement accounts which benefits that business.

So, how can small businesses take advantage of this concept?

There are websites designed to help the average person or business to make use of these motivational techniques to improve employee procrastination. Strategies range from charging money for failures to cheers and encouragement for success. These businesses also help organize a plan to increase work productivity.

Resources to Help With Employee Procrastination

Beeminder.com

Beeminder ‘stings’ when you go off the rails. This site asks you to set up goals for yourself. This might be exercise 3Xweek, or work on spreadsheet every weekday. Beeminder will send an email asking you to verify the meeting of the goal. Missing it will cost you whatever you’ve pledged, e.g. five dollars.

Beeminder plots the optimal results of your goals on a chart, colored in yellow, calling it the ‘Yellow Brick Road’. Your true path is colored in turquoise making it easy to compare your progress.

StickK.com

The website states, “Your company can design unique Commitment Contracts, aimed at improving the health or performance of your employees. From losing weight to smoking cessation, or meeting deadlines to exceeding sales targets, any goal can be made into a Commitment Contract. To improve success rates, employers can assign referees and reward participants.”

It utilizes both monetary penalties and supervisory oversight as in a referee that verifies your reports. Access can be granted to friends and family who may want to cheer you on.

StickK has a section committed to giving corporate and institutional entities tools to help their employees be more productive.

Habitica.com

This website also caters to the need of businesses, but takes a unique approach. Habitica uses a computer game technique. Your goals are ‘monsters’ to be defeated and, like most computer games, you build your avatar and acquire weapons. You can compete with friends or join an interest group.

The corporate plan allows for a special site to be built for the company’s employees independent of Habitica’s site and give controls to the employers.

Rescuetime.com

While this website gives out good tips to deal with procrastination, it also gives a hand by blocking access to distracting websites during a set time designated to work on a project.

Coffitivity.com

Coffitivity.com, as the name suggests gives gives out the sound and ambience of a coffee shop. The website claims scientific backing for this service. The idea seems to be that if you are working alone, the illusion of other people working away is inspiring to the work process.

Writeordie.com

Now this site is hard core. It keeps tabs on how steady you are writing and if the flow stops for too long the punishment steps in. The more mellow of these are the taking away of pleasant background sound or beautiful background. The harsher consequence might be an ugly popup to scare you or even worse, it’ll take out all the vowels of part of your work. You set up your choice and then experiment with works best for you.

In the end, building good habits depends on the determination and need of the individual. Goals are good, rewards and punishments can help, but it all depends on truthfulness and cooperation.

How Does Closing 300 Stores Help Office Depot Grow? (Watch)

Image result for How Does Closing 300 Stores Help Office Depot Grow? (Watch)Office Depot is closing 300 retail stores in an attempt to save its overall business. The closing of those retail locations shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, since the whole retail office supply industry has been struggling to keep up with online retailers like Amazon for years.

But while closing hundreds of stores might not seem like the sign of a business moving forward, in this case Office Depot is actually using this opportunity to build a better shopping experience for modern consumers. Instead of using all of its resources trying to maintain retail locations, the company is reallocating those resources onto things like mobile apps and online stores, while maintaining a smaller brick and mortar retail presence.

The industry is still in a state of flux, like many other markets that have been impacted by the changing online business landscape. But these store closures could potentially lead to a better outlook for Office Depot, if the company is able to cut costs enough to compete with Amazon and similar retailers.

Do You Run an Agile Organization?

Running any sort of business means needing to adapt from time to time, even when those changes don’t seem ideal. But for those who try to hang onto outdated models and practices, it could be too late to make changes when you realize they’ve become necessary.

Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 Edge Help Samsung Extend Lead Over Apple: IDC, Strategy Analytics

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Samsung got a lift from the March launch of its Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge
  • 77 million Samsung smartphones were sold in the quarter: IDC
  • According to Strategy Analytics, Samsung had 22.8 percent marketshare

Samsung extended its lead in the global smartphone market over Apple in the second quarter, gaining from the launch of its updated flagship handsets, surveys showed Thursday.

The South Korean giant delivered 77 million smartphones in the quarter, up 5.5 percent from a year ago, for a market share of 22.4 percent, research firm IDC said.

That compared with a 15 percent drop in sales for Apple’s iPhones, which accounted for 11.8 percent, IDC said.

Samsung got a lift from the March launch of its Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge flagship models, with an upgraded processor, waterproofing and other features, IDC noted.

Apple, despite the launch of its more affordable iPhone SE, failed to keep pace and reported weaker sales compared to a year ago.

A separate survey by Strategy Analytics had a similar estimate, with Samsung at 22.8 percent to 11.9 percent for Apple.

Neil Mawston, executive director at Strategy Analytics, said he sees Samsung making further gains this year.

“With a new Galaxy Note 7 flagship model rumored to be on the way, Samsung will be able to strengthen its smartphone leadership into the second half of the year,” Mawston said.

“Apple continues to face iPhone fatigue among consumers and the new iPhone SE model has not been able to stem that trend.”

IDC’s Ryan Reith said the saturation of many markets has forced makers to rethink their strategy. “Apple is beginning to put more emphasis on ‘device as a service’ to try to prevent lengthening replacement cycles,” he said.

“This is a growing theme we have heard more about from PCs to smartphones. Additionally, the overall China market slowdown continues to ramp up competition in other high growth markets like India, Indonesia, and Middle East.”

Both surveys showed China’s Huawei the number three vendor with a 9.4 percent market share.

Other Chinese vendors were in the top five.

According to IDC, Oppo and Vivo were fourth and fifth with 6.6 and 4.8 percent respectively.

The Strategy Analytics report showed Oppo with 5.3 percent and Xiaomi fifth with 4.3 percent.

IDC said overall smartphone sales rose 0.3 percent to 343.3 million units, while the second survey showed a one percent rise to 340 million.
