Nokia Invests In Camera Technology to Compete with Apple and Android

Nokia camera in smartphone

Nokia, the Finnish smartphone company, wants better cameras in its smartphones. Nokia Growth Partners, the manufacturer’s venture arm, is investing $20 million with other partners in California-based startup Pelican Images, which commercializes technology that improves on conventional camera technology including pixel size.

Bloomberg reported recently that Nokia hopes better cameras will help the competitively priced Lumia compete with rivals from Apple Inc. and those using the Android operating system.  Nokia shares have fallen more than 80 percent since the iPhone was introduced in 2007.  Nokia was once at or near the top of lists of most popular phones but now has just 3 percent market share.

Pelican Images offers thinner hardware, better image quality and more editing capabilities, according to the company. Here’s how the company describes its camera technology in a prepared release:

“Pelican Imaging’s computational camera technology provides depth mapping at every pixel, enabling ‘the perfect picture’ every time and allowing users to perform an unprecedented range of selective focus and edits, both pre- and post-capture. The camera itself is about 50% thinner than existing mobile cameras.”

Pelican’s technology is “at the cutting edge of mobile camera technologies,” asserts a spokesman for Nokia Growth Partners.  Nokia has bought or invested in other image-related technology companies in the past year. Those include  Sweden-based Scalado, as well as California-based InVisage Technologies Inc. and Singapore-based Heptagon.

Why small businesses should care about cameras

Small business owners and their teams are using cameras in phones for all sorts of things these days: customer service calls, impromptu shots to share on Facebook, and even marketing images of products for your online store or blog posts.

With the Web becoming more visual today, most of us need more images than ever.   Quality, cost and speed all have to be balanced when it comes to photography.  Images taken by a professional photographer are still going to be used for some purposes. For other purposes, an impromptu and informal shot taken by one of the team — perhaps at a customer site or in the field — may be in order.  For those kinds of shots, you want high quality images and practically-speaking, that requires a high-quality camera in a smartphone.

The Nokia Lumia line runs on Windows software, which also tends to be used in laptops and desktop computer systems used by small businesses.  Nokia often touts its cameras in its Lumia marketing materials today.

Camera review: Coolpad Note 5

Coolpad Note 5Coolpad Note 5

Camera is often the key talking point in smartphones made by Chinese companies. Some impress with their picture quality, while some offer interesting modes and filters which are not available on phones of Indian makers. Priced at Rs.10,999, Coolpad’s new budget smartphone Note 5 offers a mix of both.

The smartphone comes with a 13-megapixel camera with aperture f/2.2 and can record videos at 1,080p @ 30 fps. It also supports touch to focus and has a LED flash for low-light shots. There is also a low-light mode which can light up darker areas and deliver slightly better results in low light. The camera app shows a few modes on the home screen itself, while a few are hidden away and can be accessed by tapping on a few screen buttons. One of the on screen-buttons takes you to the various live filters, where you can see what the final shot will be like. The other button takes you to camera modes such as Long exposure, Watermark and Panorama. The modes on the screen include night, beauty and professional.

Landscape

This is a long shot of the top few storeys of a building with the sky in the background. The sky in the background shows a dull shade of blue, which is what it actually looked like to the bare eyes. It hasn’t tried to enhance colours for effect, which suggests you will get mostly accurate shots out of this camera, at least under natural light. Though detailing is good as we could see the windows and balcony of the top storeys clearly, the image loses its crispness.

Food

This is an indoor shot taken under yellow light, yet the white colour on the sugar particles and the brown of the donut looks affected. This shows that the camera can handle reflections well, but struggles when it comes to getting the focus right. There is no macro mode which could improve things.

Flower

In another close-up but under natural light, the camera has captured the pink in the flower very accurately. The darker shade within the pink colour in the flower petals stands out from the lighter shades clearly. The background looks well-illuminated. As a result, the fine lines on the leaves are clearly visible.

Street view

Darker colours look a bit hard to decipher here. The green colour in the trees looks a little too bright, for example. Lighter colours such as the colour of the sky and that of the buildings look near-real, though. We could read the text in shops clearly but as we zoomed in, the level of noise increased significantly.

Low light

Like most budget smartphones, low-light photography is not one of the strong points of the Coolpad Note 5. While colours look realistic to a great extent, the lack of sharpness was visible on the phone’s screen itself. On a bigger screen, the amount of noise becomes clearer.

Moto Z Tipped to Get Hasselblad Camera Mod Soon

Moto Z Tipped to Get Hasselblad Camera Mod Soon

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Leak suggests module will carry a Hasselblad branding
  • Camera module expected to be launched next week at IFA
  • Camera module tipped to have a 10X optical zoom

When Moto Z was about to be launched, there was an excitement around the smartphone less because of the actual hardware specifications on it and more because of the swappable mods that could enhance the utility of the device manifolds. As the various mods were introduced, the anticipated camera module was found missing. If we go by the latest leaks, it seems like the module might finally be coming to Moto Z- that too in partnership with one of the most legendary professional camera makers in the world, Hasselblad.

Leaked images posted by fan site Moto G3 suggest that the much awaited camera module will not only come with a Hasselblad branding, but will also feature a powerful 10X optical zoom lens that will ensure that your images look sharp despite zooming in from a long range.

Even though there is no information regarding the sensor on the camera mod, because of its small size, the Hasselblad’s signature medium format sensor probably won’t make it to the Moto Mod. The images include promotional material, which point to a Xenon flash, Raw format option, and automatic backup feature. A live photo shows f/3.5-f/6.5 aperture range, and a 4.5-45mm focal range.

According to the report, the module can be expected to be launched at IFA event in Germany, which starts September 2. Despite no leak regarding the price of the camera module, the Hasselblad branding suggests that the addition might not come in cheap.

x

Based on the focal length, the report speculates the use of a 1/1.7 to 1/2-inch sensor like in some of the premium compact cameras, giving a field of view close to a 21mm to 24mm lens on a full-frame camera. As with every other leak, we will have to wait till the actual announcement by the company for an official confirmation.

Xiaomi Mi Note 2 Leak Tips Dual-Edge Curved Display, Dual Camera Setup

Xiaomi Mi Note 2 Leak Tips Dual-Edge Curved Display, Dual Camera Setup

HIGHLIGHTS

  • It is expected to support a USB Type-C port
  • The Mi Note 2 is pegged to be powered by a Snapdragon 821 SoC
  • Xiaomi will offer 64GB and 128GB inbuilt storage options

The Xiaomi Mi Note 2 is expected to launch on Friday, but before that happens, we already know quite a bit about the smartphone. The Mi Note 2 has been subjected tovarious leaks, and the latest comes in the form of more images. These new images testify to the old rumours of a dual camera setup, and the dual-edge curved display.

The latest Mi Note 2 images were leaked by tipster @kjuma (and were picked up by Gizmochina). The images aren’t as clear as the render images we were treated to a while back, but they still clearly show the much talked about dual-edge display. In the meanwhile, Xiaomi has taken inspiration from Huawei, LG and HTC to introduce the dual camera setup in the Mi Note 2. However, this isn’t the first smartphone that Xiaomi has introduced with two cameras at the back. TheXiaomi Redmi Pro launched in July also sported the dual camera module.

x

One of the images also give away some of the specification details, and the Mi Note 2 is expected to feature an all metal body, a 5.5-inch Oled screen, 6GB RAM, 128GB inbuilt storage offering, and a Snapdragon 821 chipset.

Past leaks suggest that the Mi Note 2 will come with a USB Type-C port, 3600mAh battery, two speaker grilles, and a fingerprint sensor at the front. There’s another 6GB RAM/64GB storage bundle expected alongside the above mentioned configurations. The 64GB is expected to be priced at CNY 2,499 (roughly Rs. 25,000) and the 128GB variant should be priced at CNY 2,799 (roughly Rs. 28,000).

iPhone 7 Rear Panel Leak Shows Design Changes; iPhone 7 Plus Dual Camera Spotted

HIGHLIGHTS
The leaks show no sign of the Smart Connector.
The iPhone 7 to sport a new arch-shaped camera.
Apple has ordered for around 72 to 78 million iPhone 7 devices this year.
Leaks surrounding the iPhone 7 have picked up pace, and now several reports and images of Apple’s upcoming smartphone have surfaced online revealing more crucial details.

What is claimed to be the actual rear panel of the iPhone 7 is seen in photos, revealing design tweaks. The Weibo image, retrieved by 9to5Mac, reiterates previous reports, and shows that the antenna bands are shifted to the top and bottom edges. The camera lens continues to protrude, but seems to be a bit closer to the sides. The lens is more arched-shape with smooth edges, and a protective circumference around it. Even though the camera continues to jut out, the design is tweaked so that the lens stays protected even without a rear casing.

iphone 7_leak1_weibo.jpg
In the meanwhile, HDBlog leaked images of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus moulds, along with the schematics of the two smartphones. These images further testify that the iPhone 7 Plus will come with the dual camera setup, but there is no trace of the Smart Connector to be seen. This is in contrast with previous reports that point towards an iPad Pro-like Smart Connector at the back of the new iPhone 7 Plus or iPhone 7 Pro devices.

iphone 7_leak_baidu.jpg
Apple is also said to be very optimistic about its upcoming iPhone devices, and has ordered for a large number to be produced. Economic Daily News reports that Apple has asked its manufacturers Foxconn and Pegatron to produce as many as 72 to 78 million devices this year. There have been reports of slow growth in sales in the past year, but it looks like the company is betting big with the iPhone 7.

The iPhone 7 is expected to launch in three variants – iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 7 Pro/Plus Premium. It should come with Apple’s new A10 processor, and run iOS 10. The larger variant is expected to see a bump in RAM to 3GB to support the dual camera setup, while it is expected to come with a possible 256GB option. There have also long been rumours for the removal of the 3.5mm headphone jack in this generation.

According to a Bloomberg report, Apple has already planned for mass production of Oled displays for next year’s iPhone. Applied Materials hinted at these huge demands, and said that there has been a fourfold increase in orders. Notably, Apple has also been rumoured to switch to an all-glass enclosure with the iPhone 7s aka iPhone 8,
