Playing Action Video Games May Boost Driving Skills: Study

Playing Action Video Games May Boost Driving Skills: Study

Playing action-based video games may boost the players’ ability to coordinate visual information with their motor control – a skill critical to many real-world behaviours including driving, says new research.

The findings showed that playing some types of video games can confer benefits for specific visual abilities such as sensitivity to contrast and visuo-spatial attention.

“The research shows that playing easily accessible action video games can be a cost-effective tool to help people improve essential visuomotor-control skills used for driving,” said lead researcher Li Li, Associate Professor at New York University in Shanghai, China.

Experienced action gamers showed much greater precision in keeping to their lane and showed less deviation from centre in the face of increasing headwinds, when compared to the participants with little to no action video game experience.

To establish a causal link between action video games and visuomotor control skills, the team recruited participants who had no action video gaming experience to take part in a training study.

They then compared the visuomotor abilities of players who had played at least 5 hours per week over the previous 6 months to participants who had negligible action video game experience.

The participants were randomly assigned to either an action video game group or a control group, and they completed a total of 10 1-hour training sessions.

The data showed that playing “Mario Kart,” a fast-paced action video game, improved participants’ visuomotor control skills on the target dot task after five hours of training.

Those who played “Roller Coaster Tycoon”, a non-action strategy game, showed no such improvement over time.

For novice drivers, training with driving video games may be more helpful, the researchers suggested in the work published in the journal Psychological Science.

LG Appliances and TV Earnings at Record Levels but No G5 Boost for Mobile Division

LG Appliances and TV Earnings at Record Levels but No G5 Boost for Mobile Division

South Korea’s LG Electronics Inc on Thursday posted its highest quarterly operating profit in two years, thanks to record appliances and television earnings that offset another loss for the mobile division.

The world’s second-largest TV maker behind SamsungElectronics Co Ltd said in a regulatory filing its April-June profit more than doubled from a year earlier to KRW 585 billion ($521 million), matching its earlier guidance.

LG said it expected July-September operating profit to be higher than the KRW 294 billion profit it reported a year earlier, while revenue would be similar to the 14 trillion won recorded in the third quarter of 2015.

Operating profit for the appliances division jumped 49 percent from a year earlier to a quarterly record of KRW 433.7 billion, the company’s top earner for the seventh straight quarter as sales of premium products continued to support margins.

LG’s TV division swung to a profit of 356.7 billion won, also a quarterly record, boosted by sales of high-end televisions and improved cost structure amid declining panel prices.

The mobile business continued to struggle, however, reporting a KRW 153.5 billion operating loss, the fifth straight quarter in the red as sales of the flagship G5 fell short of expectations.

The company in April guided for a sharp second-quarter rebound in mobile earnings on G5 sales. The phone was received positively by critics for allowing users to upgrade functions such as the camera through attachable modules.

But initial manufacturing problems undermined early momentum for the G5, analysts said, leading to disappointing sales.

The firm said the third quarter would remain difficult for the business though its performance would improve as new products launched.

LG’s second-quarter revenue rose 0.6 percent to KRW 14 trillion, matching its guidance for earlier this month.

Opera Mini for Android Gets Video Boost, Save to SD Card, and More

Opera Mini for Android Gets Video Boost, Save to SD Card, and More

Opera has started rolling out an update for its Opera Mini for Android browser application. The highlight of the update is the new Video Boost feature. As the name suggests, the Video Boost feature would help Opera Mini users “see less of the video-buffering wheel,” the company said.

Users after updating to Opera Mini 15 for Android can tap the savings summary to change to high-savings mode under the “O” menu and check the Video Boost box at the bottom. The feature also shows number of videos that have been optimised. Opera said its new feature shrinks the size of the video data to lessen buffering delays. The company also claimed that it was “the first company to integrate video optimisation into a web browser.”

Some of the other features included in the latest version of Opera Mini for Android app are ‘Save to SD card’ feature on handsets with Android 4.4.4 KitKat or higher OS versions, SD-card file access when uploading on the Web, updated high data-savings mode, improved fast scrolling, option to shrink photos before uploading, and automatic status bar colour change. The updated app is available to download from Google Play.

“In India alone, 70 percent of smartphone users stream video on their phones. Unfortunately, this eats up data plans quickly, and stalled videos waste time and create frustration. Opera Mini for Android comes to the rescue with video boost. It works to make the video sizes smaller serving up slimmer mobile videos and keeping data plans in check. If you love to watch videos on your Android device, but hate getting surprises on your data bill, it’s time to switch browsers,” said Sunil Kamath, Vice President – South Asia & South East Asia at Opera.
