Microsoft Forces Windows Defender on Users, Disables Third-Party Security Apps: Kaspersky
Kaspersky alleges Microsoft to force its own Windows Defender on users
Russia’s FAS has reportedly opened an investigation into Microsoft
Microsoft is yet to respond to the claims made by Kaspersky
Russia’s Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS) has reportedly opened an investigation into Microsoft on receiving a complaint from Internet security company, Kaspersky Lab. Microsoft is alleged to force its own Windows Defender on Windows 10 users while disabling third-party security software.

According to the security company, Microsoft is using its dominating position in the market of operating systems to give an upper hand to its own products over others. “The company is foisting its Defender on the user, which isn’t beneficial from the point of view of protection of a computer against cyber-attacks. The company is also creating obstacles for companies to access the market, and infringes upon the interests of independent developers of security products,” wrote Eugene Kaspersky in a blog post.

ZDNet points out that Microsoft is said to violating Part 1 Article 10 of the Federal Law “On Protection of Competition” which states, “the actions (omission to act) of an economic unit occupying a dominant position which result or can result in barring, restricting or eliminating competition and (or) infringe upon the interests of other persons shall be prohibited.”
Microsoft has been also alleged to “automatically and without any warning deactivate” the already installed security software on the system. “When you upgrade to Windows 10, Microsoft automatically and without any warning deactivates all ‘incompatible’ security software and in its place installs… you guessed it – its own Defender antivirus,” added Kaspersky in his post.
Further adding, the blog post gave several examples how Microsoft is pushing its users to use Windows Defender instead of third-party software.

Kaspersky adds that Microsoft has limited the possibility of “independent developers” to warn users about their licenses expiring in the first three days after expiration. “Actually, a warning is there, but it’s buried in a Windows Security Center notification, which hardly ever gets read,” notes the blog. Unfortunately, Microsoft is yet to respond to the claims made by Kaspersky.

In a statement, Deputy Head of FAS Anatoly Golomolzin (via SoftPedia) said, “Since Microsoft itself develops antivirus software – Windows Defender that switches on automatically if third-party software fails to adapt to Windows 10 in due time, such actions lead to unreasonable advantages for Microsoft on the software market. Our task is to ensure equal conditions for all participants on this market.”

2016 Is the Year Small Businesses Must Develop Mobile Apps

mobile phone using

Apps are no longer considered merely a “branding exercise” for small businesses. Business owners are becoming wise to the marketing power a well-designed, intuitive app can bring. From simplifying online purchases to providing easy-to-access information, the benefits are undeniable which is why small businesses must develop mobile apps to stay competitive.

Why Small Businesses Must Develop Mobile Apps

In previous years, the rising cost of custom app developers made apps an impossible expense for small businesses. The recent growth of software development kits that streamline the app development process and allow even non-coders to create a fully-functioning app have dramatically reduced the cost of creating an app.

The affordability and fast development times these kits allow has encouraged more businesses than ever to create their own apps.

As social media use continues to rise, consumers are becoming more open to engaging with brands on a day-to-day basis, even if they aren’t specifically loyal to or purchasers of that particular business. Business owners and marketers are capitalizing on consumers’ desires for interaction by producing entertaining mobile apps. While being fun to use, informational or inspirational, a common characteristic of these apps is that they feature a strong call-to-action to persuade the user to purchase a product or in some way benefit the company in question.

What Types of Small Businesses are Making Apps?

A 2015 analysis of 40,402 apps created with an app development platform found that while “expected” businesses such as restaurants and gyms were highly prevalent, others such as golf courses, hotels, politicians and plumbers were also on the rise.

But why are these industries building more apps? Well, as the ease of building apps increases, so does the amount of potential functionality. One-off investments in systems such as in-app payments or bookings can save businesses money in the long-term as they reduce the amount of time their staff needs to spend fulfilling orders, taking payments or completing bookings.

For businesses that meet potential clients at various locations, the ability to show data or portfolio pieces offline using an app can make the difference between closing the sale and losing the prospect to a competitor.

How are Small Businesses Benefiting from Mobile Apps?

A recent survey showed that 62 percent of the businesses asked already had apps or were in the process of building one. Of those, 20 percent used their apps purely for branding purposes, 30 percent have revenue generating apps and 50 percent use them for support and engagement.

We spend 174 minutes on mobile devices every day. Mobile sales are estimated to have reached $74 billion in 2015 — up 32 percent from 2014. Thirty percent of all online purchases by Millennials are done on mobile devices. This jumps to 33 percent for moms and 43 percent for U.S. Hispanics.

However, apps aren’t just for commerce businesses. Push notifications can be used by any niche to put your brand name directly in front of the smartphone owner. Apps can be used for any type of activity: booking systems, file uploads, vouchers, newsletters, digital magazines, support, providing information, logging exercise or nutrition, showing videos and so much more.

Even businesses that you wouldn’t have thought would benefit from an app are proving critics wrong by producing innovative and engaging apps. For example, an independent pet food supplier could have an app that encourages users to upload comical photographs of their pets for a chance to win a prize. A product for new mothers could build a community of local mums and arrange meet-ups. A realtor could create an app that compares local house prices now to five years ago. The possibilities really are endless. All it takes is a little imagination to devise a system that consumers will enjoy engaging with.

What Does the Future Hold?

The projections around app driven revenue are staggering. Non-game app downloads are estimated to grow 23 percent in the next five years, exceeding $182 billion in 2020. Smartphone adoption in emerging markets should see mobile app store downloads more than double between 2015 and 2020.

Current data about mobile purchasing across the different age groups gives a strong indication that in 5-10 years, everyone is going to be a mobile shopper. Sixty-nine percent of millennials buy products on their smartphones, compared to 53 percent of Gen Xers and 16 percent of Boomers.

The increased market share and spending power this brings will make apps a necessity for B2C businesses in order to streamline a consumer’s journey from product browsing to payment.

The above statistics are also good news for digital agencies that offer mobile app development. As more businesses adopt apps, the demand for their services grows. The development of new ‘smart products’ such as virtual reality and wearable technology may compound this further as apps will need to be adapted to work on new online platforms.

Microsoft Build 2016 India: Bots, IoT, and Windows Apps

Microsoft Build 2016 India: Bots, IoT, and Windows Apps

Microsoft Build 2016 India: Bots, IoT, and Windows Apps
Build is Microsoft’s conference for Windows developers.
It was held in various parts of the world, including India.
Bots as a conversation platform was the big theme of the conference.
Bengaluru-based startup Yellow Messenger is one of the companies in India that’s exploring conversational commerce through bots. You tell the bot to show you shoes and then continue the conversation by asking for men’s shoes, or women’s, and so on. Yellow Messenger is just one of the startups in India that’s making use of Microsoft’s Cognitive Services.

These are a collection of APIs that allow systems to use natural language processing to hear, see, speak, understand and interpret the needs of users. Cognitive Services were one of the tools that Microsoft demonstrated in Pune, at its Build 2016 tour event on Friday.

Build is an event for Windows developers, where Microsoft showcases all the tools developers can use to make Windows apps. With over 40 percent of Microsoft’s cloud platform Azure’s revenue coming from ISVs (Independent Software Ventures) and startups, the focus of the keynote was naturally on reaching out to them.

“When developers want to do machine learning, when they want to use bots, we want them to think about us,” Jeffrey Burtoft, Senior Program Manager at Microsoft, said during the keynote. The purpose behind using bots is to have conversations without having a human on the other end. Microsoft’s Cognitive Services work on services such as Skype, Web, Slack, Facebook Messenger, among others.

Harish Vaidyanathan, Director of ISV Business at Microsoft, added to this, talking about the work Microsoft is doing to bring these tools to India. “Not all conversations are in English. This is India right? Being able to do multilingual conversations in one stroke [is one of Yellow Messenger’s key features],” he added. Vaidyanathan said Yellow Messenger can also do other things, like take a picture and say, ‘Show me something like this.’ “Those are some of the things that Yellow Messenger does. It’s already live on Facebook, Telegram, and Skype,” he said.

He also talked about how India can use the Internet of Things to address seasonal demand of resources. “If you think of Indians, we’re very aspirational. We want everything but we don’t want to buy everything we want,” Vaidyanathan said.
He explained this with the example of another company, called iBot. The minimum price of a Eureka Forbes Aquaguard water purifier is around Rs. 8,500, which is a bit too high for quite a few people. “What iBot enabled, is that you can take Aquaguard and use it on a prepaid basis. This is pure water, as a service. People pay for what they use,” he said, adding that the sensor is connected to Microsoft’s cloud platform.

Burtoft said Azure has 30 data centres around the world, which is more than both Amazon and Google. Three of these data centres are in India, one of which is in Pune. Highlighting the importance of Microsoft cloud in the Indian market, he said 50 percent of the top 100 companies listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) use Microsoft cloud services. Globally, he said, Azure gets over 120,000 new subscriptions every month, and over two trillion messages per week are processed by Azure IoT.

After holding the Build 2016 conference in San Francisco earlier this year, the company has been taking the conference to various parts of the world. The Pune leg of the Build 2016 tour was attended by over 600 developers from India.

On the consumer side, Burtoft said Windows 10 is Microsoft’s most successful version of Windows with over 300 million active users. He also showed Project Centennial, Microsoft’s bid to get more apps on its Windows Store. This makes it easy for developers to port their Win32 apps to the Windows Store and to monetise these apps through the store. Burtoft said the Windows 10 Store has had over 5 billion visits since its launch and Project Centennial will help users find safe (virus-free) copies of the apps they want to download. “It’s becoming harder and harder to get Win32 apps [to find a safe, malware-free download],” he said.

Disclosure: Microsoft India sponsored the correspondent’s travel for this event.

Windows 10 Preview Build 14936 Brings the Ability to Uninstall Preloaded Apps

Windows 10 Preview Build 14936 Brings the Ability to Uninstall Preloaded Apps

  • The feature is active only for a few apps
  • You still cannot uninstall Alarm & Clock, and Cortana
  • The feature is still in preview, and is expected to hit all users in 2017

Windows 10 comes with many preloaded apps that users may not be too keen on utilising. Now, Microsoft has introduced the ability to uninstall these apps in its latest preview build of Windows 10. With Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 14936, Microsoft has bought the ability to uninstall preloaded apps like Mail, Calendar, Calculator, Groove Music, Maps, and Weather.

In earlier versions, the uninstall button was not active against the above mentioned apps. Now, if you head to the Apps and Features section in the Settings app, you will find that the uninstall button is active, and that these apps can be removed easily.

This was first spotted by Ghacks, and the publication claims that the feature is expected to roll out commercially next year. Also Camera, Cortana, Alarm & Clock, Messaging, and many other apps are still difficult to remove, and the uninstall button remains inactive.

The reason for this distinction is unknown, and Microsoft could make the button active on all apps eventually, before releasing it on the stable version. Of course, the preview version is only available for Insider members, and if you want to use the latest build, you need to be a part of the Windows Insider Program. To register, head here.

Twitter tipster Core has also hinted that the upcoming build that Microsoft intends to release this week or next week, will be jam packed with features. Last month, Microsoft announced that Windows 10 is running on 400 million active devices as on September 26. To recall, Microsoft had announced Windows 10 was on 300 million active devices back in May.

How to Get Google Play and Android Apps on Your Chromebook Right Now

How to Get Google Play and Android Apps on Your Chromebook Right Now

  • This method requires users to switch to the Canary canal
  • Toshiba Chromebook 2015 can find it in the developer channel as well
  • This method is very unstable

Google announced the arrival of Android apps on Chromebooks at I/O this year. However months later, only a handful of Chromebooks have received Google Play support, and Google is taking rather slow steps to make it available to all the compatible Chromebooks. Luckily, there is another cheat way to get Play Store to work on Chromebooks, and start using Android apps immediately.

Of course, before we begin to tell you the way, it is important to warn you that the method is unsafe. It requires you to use the Canary canal, which is extremely unstable. If the method backfires, it could cause some damage to your machine, and we recommend you to move forward at your own risk.

This method won’t work on all models, but should at least work on the 50 models that Google listed earlier in the year. If you have one of these laptops, and want Google Play installed immediately, enable developer mode on your Chromebook by pressing Esc+F5+Power. Then Press Ctrl+D and follow the instructions.

After the Chromebook boots, press Ctrl+D again to jump verification. Switch to Canary Canal by pressing Ctrl+Alt+T, and type Shell in the command prompt. Then type ‘sudo su’ and then enter ‘update_engine_client -channel=canary-channel -update’ to switch to canary channel.

Again press Ctrl+Alt+T > Type Shell > Type sudo su > then ‘echo ‘-enable-arc’ > /usr/local/chrome_dev.conf > mount -o bind /usr/local/chrome_dev.conf /etc/chrome_dev.conf’. Now press Ctrl + Shift + Q two times to log out. After signing out, sign back in and restart your machine. After the reboot, the Chromebook should have the Google Play Store installed.

If you do not see it immediately, browse through the Settings menu to see if there is an option to enable Google Play. This process was posted by Google Plus users, and was first spotted by Chrome Story.

Justin Slatten on Google Plus also notes that Toshiba Chromebook 2015 users need not switch to the Canary canal, and can find Google Play on the developer channel as well. 9to5Google has done a full video with step by step instructions as well.

User can switch back to the stable Chrome OS channel anytime, by hitting Ctrl+Alt+T > Type Shell > Type sudo su > Enter following command: update_engine_client -channel=stable-channel -update > and then press space bar at boot.

BlackBerry Hub+ Suite of Apps Now Available for Android Marshmallow Devices

BlackBerry Hub+ Suite of Apps Now Available for Android Marshmallow Devices

  • BlackBerry Hub+ now available on Android Marshmallow devices
  • After free trial, you can pay $0.99 for ad-free version
  • Services might soon come to Android Lollipop and iOS devices

In the tech industry, companies that have failed to adapt quickly to changes have often seen their fortunes change in no time. Nokia, for example, was once the biggest name in mobile phone industry, but has seen its depletion in last decade. BlackBerry has faced a similar downfall due to the dominance of Apple and Google in the smartphone market, however, the company now wants to make certain amends in its strategy and be more adaptive.

As part of this strategy change, the company has now made its BlackBerry Hub+ suite available to the Android devices that are running on Android 6.0 Marshmallow. BlackBerry Hub+ consists of various apps by BlackBerry like Calendar, Password Keeper, Contacts, Tasks, Device Search, Notes, and Launcher.

All you need to do to avail BlackBerry’s services on Android is download the app from Google Play, and install the services you need on an individual basis.

You will get a free trial period of 30-days initially, after which you can either pay $0.99 per month to use the ad-free version of the services or continue using the services loaded with ads but without any payment.

“We’re looking to expand access to Hub+ to customers running Android 5.0 Lollipop, and also investigating how best to deliver the BlackBerry experience on iOS devices, too,” the company said in itsofficial blog.

Even though this move cannot be seen as a positive for the mobile devices developed by the company, as it was sort of a strong selling point for many of them till date, the software offered by BlackBerry is likely to get a much wider audience as a result of this change.

Share a screenshot and win Samsung smartphones worth Rs. 90,000 by participating in the #BrowseFaster contest.

Pokemon Go Clones, Fake Apps Dominate Charts on iOS App Store

Pokemon Go Clones, Fake Apps Dominate Charts on iOS App Store

  • Pokemon Go is a new game for Android and iOS.
  • It is available in US, Australia, Japan, and New Zealand.
  • iOS users in other regions are downloading clone apps.

If you have an Android phone, there’s a good chance you’ve read our piece on how to download Pokemon Go. If you have an iPhone or an iPad unless you have an App Store account in US, Japan, Australia, or New Zealand, there’s no way to play Pokemon Go.

There is always an opportunity for clones and fake apps where the demand is high and supply low. Pokemon Go is no exception. We checked the top free apps charts on various App Store regions and it appears that several clones are rising up the ranks.

(Also see: Why Nintendo Making Mobile Games Is Great News for Everyone)

Pokemon Go appears to have caught on Android phones in India, judging only on how many people in India have shared their experiences via comments on Gadgets 360 and emails. In the meanwhile, several iPhone users seem to be downloading a fake app called Go Catch Em All. It’s among the top 10 free iOS apps on the Indian App Store. We’re not sure how Apple even approved this game as it uses a screenshot from Pokemon Go. That said, if you’re among those playing Pokemon Go in India, be sure to read our handy guide.

Most reviews of the game say that the game forces them to post a review to progress and that it looks nothing like what the screenshots suggest. This fake game is the most popular free app in Singapore, Germany, United Kingdom, among many other regions.

(Also see: Swing Copters the Latest to Get Lost in a Sea of Clones in App Stores)

China is one of the biggest markets for Apple and the iPhone is very popular there. The top free app in China is called City Elf Go. While it was released in March 2016, a few months before Pokemon Go, the concept – capturing elves in various locations – seems similar, even though this game doesn’t appear to have an augmented reality mode.

Several other clones such as Pocket Go Poke Evolution and Poke Poke Go are among top-ranked free apps across the world.

This shows that Nintendo, and the studio that developed this Pokemon – Niantic – didn’t anticipate just how popular this game would be. Come on Nintendo, just release it across the world already.
