Microsoft Releases Fix for Users Affected by Windows 10 Cumulative Update Issue

Last week, Microsoft released Cumulative Update KB3194496 for users running Windows 10 Anniversary Update (version 1067), and, this caused problems for some users – trapping them in a loop after the installation failed. The issue only affected those who were previously on the Windows Insider Program before migrating the the public branch earlier this year, as well as some users still on the Windows Insider Program , Microsoft has now come out with a fix.

ZDNet reports that an email statement from Microsoft confirms that the update released for Windows 10 version 1607 on September 29 failed to install and would roll back for many users. The company claimed that a small number of customers in the Windows Insider Program that were running a previous build of the OS were affected.

“We became aware of an issue with the recent Windows 10 cumulative update that impacted a small number of customers in the Windows Insider Program that were running a previous build of the OS. We have created a solution to resolve this issue, which is now live and can be accessed here.”

Users affected by the update reported that after the system reached the 100 percent mark, they would get a prompt saying the process could not be completed and thereby reverting the changes, resulting in a loop of failed attempts.

Microsoft has released a patch that fixes the issue. That link takes you to the Windows 10 1607 (RS1) Script fix to unblock update for Insider.

There is no clear indication as to how many users have been affected although Microsoft says it’s a “small number”. However, ZDNet’s Ed Bott claims “the number is probably in the hundreds of thousands, representing systems that were in the Windows Insider Program, receiving preview releases, during the first half of 2016 before switching to the public branch.”

LinkedIn:100 Million Now Affected by Release of Data from 2012 Breach

LinkedIn is advising some 100 million users reset their passwords after data from a 2012 breach of the social network surfaced earlier this week.

In 2012, the platform fell victim and LinkedIn was hacked in an attempt that compromised millions of accounts (6.5 million to be exact), exposing members’ passwords and publishing them online.

LinkedIn assured its members at that time the compromised passwords were not published with their corresponding email logins and that the vast majority of passwords remained encrypted, although a subset was decoded.

It also conducted a password reset campaign for the affected accounts and advised all members to change their passwords.

All was well — until this past Wednesday, May 18, when LinkedIn made thisannouncement on its official blog:

“Yesterday, we became aware of an additional set of data that had just been released that claims to be email and hashed password combinations of more than 100 million LinkedIn members from that same theft in 2012.”

According to the post, LinkedIn is taking “immediate steps” to invalidate the passwords of the impacted accounts. The company said it will contact users who need to reset their accounts. LinkedIn also affirmed that there was no indication that this was the result of a new security breach.

If your account was affected, you will need to reset your password. Also, it’s not a bad idea to enable a two-step verification, a feature that LinkedIn provides, to better ensure the safety of its members.

These are steps all LinkedIn members may care to take, regardless if they fell victim to the breach or not.

Tom Clancy’s The Division – Ubisoft’s newest and biggest open world role-playing game – got a huge update last week, as evinced by the list of changes. But it seems to have caused an issue for some players, and it’s big: their characters have gone missing.

“I’ve seen several reports of players’ character getting wiped out, including myself, after the patch,” a Reddit user said on the site. “My first login was fine, and I logged in briefly to check the update and everything seemed normal. The next login attempt, I received a delta or mike error while attempting to login, so I reset the game, and then my character is gone. I hard reset the X1 to clear the cache, but to no avail. I had 150 hours into that character. This is totally unacceptable.”

Ubisoft was quick to recognise the issue, and tweeted to say they were looking to it.

Soon after, Ubisoft put out a statement. “Our team has identified and fixed the source of this issue to ensure that your characters could be correctly restored,” Yannick Banchereau, community manager for Ubisoft, posted on the official forums. “The issue was caused by a malfunctioning server that couldn’t synchronize character data correctly and corrupted them instead. The game client was unable to read this corrupted data, and simply assumed that the character didn’t exist.”

“We are currently working on a fix that should make it available shortly. Implementing this fix will require a server downtime, and we will let you know when we are ready to perform it. Please note however that in order to make your character available, we will need to restore the latest uncorrupted save of your entire account, which happened during the server maintenance of April 12. In other words, your character will be back just as you left it on April 12 at 9am CEST | 3am EDT | 12am PDT. You will lose any progress made on this character or any other one from the same account between April 12 and the next maintenance. We apologise for the inconvenience and want to thank you for your understanding and your help in identifying this issue.”

It seems Ubisoft has managed to solve the problem, and the only harm caused will be the loss of any progress made after April 12. Were you affected by this issue? Let us know in the comments.
