Amazon Partners VMware for Hybrid Cloud Services to Rival Microsoft

Amazon Partners VMware for Hybrid Cloud Services to Rival Microsoft

Amazon.com is teaming up with VMware to let customers combine VMware’s software for corporate networks with Amazon’s internet-based cloud-computing services, a bid by Amazon to better compete with rival Microsoft in hybrid cloud solutions.

VMware will deliver, sell and support a product that lets customers use their existing VMware software with access to Amazon’s cloud-based storage, database and analytic software, the companies said Thursday in a statement. Hybrid solutions allow customers to run applications on their own servers and through various remote cloud-based applications simultaneously.

Called VMware Cloud on AWS, the product will be available in mid-2017. Pricing will be disclosed closer to the release, the companies said. It will appeal to companies that want the flexibility and capacity of managing data via the cloud.

Amazon is trying to maintain its lead in the cloud-computing market over rivals Microsoft, Alphabet Inc.’s Google and IBM as more companies transition from using their servers to renting computing power and data space hosted remotely, which they access via the internet. Movie-service Netflix Inc. is a prominent example of a web company powered by Amazon Web Services.

VMware is shifting its cloud strategy to focus on selling products that work with existing leaders, rather than trying to establish itself as an alternative to the Amazons of the world. As more companies run applications on rented servers over the internet, providing services that link the different technologies customers use is a growing opportunity for VMware.

‘Powerful’ partnership
The alliance is a “very powerful collaboration” that gives companies flexibility in deciding whether to transition their data to the public cloud while maintaining investments they’ve made in on-premise data centers, said Tim Feeney, an analyst at Morningstar Inc.

“Essentially, the process of managing the hybrid cloud environment is significantly less of a hassle now,” Feeney said. “This is a very powerful move for VMware because IT managers are more likely to retain VMware’s services for longer.”

VMware CEO Pat Gelsinger said he sees hybrid solutions providing business opportunities for decades into the future while the on-premise data business slows.

The Amazon partnership could be a blow to International Business Machines Corp., which has its own deal with VMware. IBM, however, said in a statement that 1,000 clients are already using the IBM cloud with software from VMware and the partnership has created “significant momentum.”

Microsoft, responding to the Amazon-VMware agreement, said AWS is behind in offering hybrid cloud solutions.

“Microsoft Azure has always been hybrid by design, based on our decades of enterprise experience,” the company said in the statement. “True hybrid cloud isn’t just connectivity, it’s consistency — across development, management, and security.”

Global public cloud spending is expected to hit $204 billion (roughly Rs. 1,363,638 crores) this year, up 16.5 percent from a year ago, according to researcher Gartner Inc.

Apple Is Said to Plan Improved Cloud Services by Unifying Teams

Apple Is Said to Plan Improved Cloud Services by Unifying Teams

Apple Inc. plans to unify its separate Internet services groups into a single campus to better compete with Alphabet Inc.’s Google and Amazon.com Inc. in the cloud, according to people familiar with the plans.

Apple cloud services teams run by executive Eddy Cue, including Siri, Maps, iCloud, Apple Pay, Apple News and parts of iTunes and Apple Music, will move together into the company’s existing Infinite Loop campus in Cupertino, California, the people said. Currently, most Apple services are developed separately from each other in office parks rented out in other parts of Cupertino and Sunnyvale, California.

The current structure contributes to software bugs and slow product development, the people said. Bringing the teams together at a single, dedicated campus is designed to improve growth of the services business and fight competition from Google and Amazon, the people added. They did not want to be identified talking about private Apple plans. Apple declined to comment.

As iPhone growth slows and Apple goes behind the scenes to develop new hardware, the services business has been a bright spot. It grew almost 20 percent in the third quarter and may soon pass the Mac and iPad as Apple’s second-largest revenue source. Still, Apple’s cloud services have been criticized by users because of technical issues and a lack of new features. The company also stumbled in 2008 with MobileMe and in 2012 with Maps.

Cloud Space
Space for the cloud teams at the current headquarters will begin to open as Apple inches toward the launch of Apple Campus 2, a futuristic, spherical structure with multiple floors of open work space. Apple will begin moving employees there in 2017, Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook said in March. Apple broke ground on the new campus in 2013, following a well-documented announcement by company co-founder Steve Jobs in 2011.

While many Apple executives want to relocate their teams to the new campus, Cue thinks unifying at the old campus is a suitable way to improve his organization, one of the people said.

A committee of Apple managers is working on the plan to reorganize Apple across its current and future locations. Recently that plan has changed, according to a person familiar with the discussions. Apple originally expected up to 13,000 employees at the new campus. Now that number will increase by thousands and Apple is adjusting internal office space accordingly, the person said.

The new building features open floor plans and few traditional offices. While some of Apple’s senior vice presidents are expected to see their offices move over to the new campus – less than a five minute drive from the current headquarters – management must be at a vice president level or above to get a formal office, one of the people said. Previous plans included office space for senior directors, who report to vice presidents.

The new campus will be made up of bench seating, long work tables, and open cubicle spaces, potentially irking employees used to quiet office environments, two people briefed on the new campus’s plans said.

Apple’s Pie
Apple is also reorganizing its cloud computing resources to bolster its services business. The company is moving its infrastructure – things like software to process Siri queries and Apple Music downloads – onto a single, Apple-made system, according to people familiar with the matter. Code-named Pie, the platform gives Apple more control and may speed up load times.

Apple has begun moving over parts of Siri, the iTunes Store, and Apple News to the new platform, one of the people said. Apple plans to move other services, including Maps, to its new system over the next few years. Apple has also developed an internal photo storage system dubbed McQueen to gradually end its reliance on Google and Amazon servers, the people said.

The company recently indicated it is taking the cloud more seriously by hiring former Time Warner Cable executive Peter Stern as a vice president leading cloud services.

Snapdeal Now a Services Marketplace Too, With Flights, Food, Bus Tickets, and More

Snapdeal Now a Services Marketplace Too, With Flights, Food, Bus Tickets, and More

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Snapdeal on Monday announced its services marketplace
  • Previously, it already offered recharges as a service
  • It will add more services over time from different categories

From an e-commerce marketplace, Snapdeal is evolving into a larger online marketplace. The company announced on Monday it is entering into the “$100 billion” (roughly Rs. 671954 crore) market for online services starting with flight and bus ticket bookings.

Snapdeal says that it has partnered with Cleartrip, redBus, UrbanClap, and Zomato, and will be providing flight tickets, bus bookings, personal services, and food ordering through its platform.

Although Snapdeal is increasingly sidelined by most people analysing the e-commerce space in India, who focus on Flipkart, Amazon, and the spectre of China’s Alibaba, Snapdeal remains one of the biggest online companies in India, and it has reinvented itself in the past, transforming from a Groupon-type of couponing service, into one of the first e-commerce marketplaces in India.

“Online services is an industry potentially worth $100 billion by 2020, and is poised to play a huge role in driving habit commerce in India,” says Snapdeal co-founder Rohit Bansal. “The introduction of services on Snapdeal is a big leap forward in catering to nearly all the consumption needs of our customers. We are thrilled to partner with Zomato, Cleartrip, UrbanClap and redBus to bring to our users the best of choices for food, travel and personal services. We will continue to add leading service providers from other categories in our journey to offer a single point access to the widest range of services.”

“We are confident that the introduction of services on Snapdeal will bring us closer to our goal of 20 million daily transacting users by 2020,” he adds.

At a time when common wisdom is that companies are finding it harder to get funded, Snapdeal is trying to create a something-for-everything platform that will appeal to the maximum number of users. At the same time, Snapdeal’s former Chief Product Office Anand Chandrasekaran had described a “string of pearls” strategy within the company, to create a numer of businesses that would supplement each other and help drive traffic between different platforms, such as Freecharge, Shopo, or Exclusively.

Does Snapdeal’s increased focus on a wide platform mean that the string of pearls strategy wasn’t working out? The announcement came soon after some major executive changes in the company;FreeCharge reshuffled its top management in May, and Chandrasekaran’s exit from Snapdeal was announced the same day.

Snapdeal’s new partners obviously sound pretty positive about the development. “This partnership is a win-win for both Snapdeal and Zomato,” says Zomato founder and CEO Deepinder Goyal. “It will enable us to reach out and tap a larger user base of largest Indian online marketplace and will allow even more customers to order food online quickly and easily.”

“Services and products come together to make the user experience complete and we are excited about the possibilities through our joint effort,” adds, Varun Khaitan, co-Founder UrbanClap.

Maharashtra to Put All Major Public Services Online This Year: CM

Maharashtra to Put All Major Public Services Online This Year: CM

Targeting to make all public services online so that a citizen does not have to visit a government office at all, Maharashtra will be launching a mobile application and digital payment gateway by the end of the year to facilitate this.

The initiative was announced by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in Navi Mumbai on Saturday.

“This year itself we will be launching a mobile application and a payment gateway where people can pay (for government services),” he said at an event in Navi Mumbai.

He said at present, 150 public-related services have been taken online and by the end of October, the government is targeting to take the number to 250 which shall cover all the major services used by citizens.

Eventually, the aim is to have all the services online so that a citizen is not forced to visit a government office at all, Fadnavis said, without giving any timeframe for achieving the objective.

The Chief Minister was speaking at a ceremony organised to launch a cloud data centre by ‘Exuberant Support for Data Services’ in this satellite city.

The company has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Maharashtra government to invest Rs. 200 crores in the facility, which will create 500 new jobs by the end of fiscal 2017-18.

Exuberant Support Managing Director and Chief Executive Piyush Somani said the company, which started out from Nashik in northern Maharashtra over a decade ago, supports nearly 2 percent of the Internet at present by serving over 2 million websites with its cloud services.

Amazon Web Services Says Over 1,000 Databases Moved to Cloud Since January 1

Amazon Web Services Says Over 1,000 Databases Moved to Cloud Since January 1

Amazon.com’s cloud business, Amazon Web Services, said that more than 1,000 databases have been moved to the AWS cloud by customers since the beginning of the year.

The AWS Data Migration Service, which allows migration of databases such as Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL, MariaDB and PostgreSQL from on-premises data centres to AWS, is now available to all customers, the company said on Tuesday.

Amazon Web Services said that Expedia, Pegasystems, and Thomas Publishing are among many of the customers who have moved on-premises databases to Amazon Aurora and other Amazon RDS engines.

Cloud computing is the fastest growing business for Amazon, which until recently was mostly known as an online marketplace.

In the meanwhile, Amazon.com is under investigation in Italy for alleged tax evasion, the company’s chief for Italy and Spain Francois Nyuts told Bloomberg.

Prosecutors, last month, were investigating five managers at Alphabet Inc’s Google as part of a probe into allegations the firm evaded taxes worth EUR 227 million ($257 million) in Italy, according to sources.

“Amazon pays all applicable taxes in every jurisdiction where we operate, including Italy. We are cooperating fully with the Italian authorities,” Amazon spokesman Conor Sweeney told Reuters in an email.
