Chrome OS 54 Starts Rolling Out With Quick View Feature and UI Tweaks

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Chrome 54 stable channel for Chrome OS rolling out
  • It brings many improvements in user interface
  • The update also introduces a new Quick View feature

Soon after Chrome 54 was made available for Windows, Mac and Linux users, Chrome OS 54 has now moved to the stable channel. Chrome OS 54 introduces some bug fixes, security updates, UI tweaks and new features like Quick View.

The Chrome OS stable channel has been updated to 54.0.2840.79, and Chrome OS and Chromebook users will be receiving it in the next few days. While most of the Chromebooks will receive the update, HP Chromebook 13 G1, Acer Chromebook 14 for Work, and Thinkpad 13 Chromebook have been mysteriously left out.

The most notable addition is the new Quick View feature available in the File app to preview files. All you need to do is highlight a file, and then press the space bar to get a generic preview. For example, if you ‘Quick View’ an image file, a small preview along with size and file type information pops up on the screen.

Alt+Tab is a nifty shortcut often used to switch between windows. With Chrome OS 54, Google has added a new animation in the centre that shows a preview (of sorts) of all the open tabs, and lets you select exactly which tab you intend to switch to. Other changes include a new opt-in setting to show Input Method on shelf, a read only policy for external USB/SD storage devices, and general UI improvements across platform. As mentioned, Chrome 54 is already available to desktop and even Android users.

Mozilla Reveals Firefox OS IoT Projects

Mozilla Reveals Firefox OS IoT Projects

Mozilla may have given up on battling Android and iOS to find a firm position in the smartphone operating system market, but the company is affirming its growing interest in capturing a pie of the IoT space. The Firefox maker has shared details of several Firefox OS-powered connected projects it is working on.

The free-software community, led by the Mozilla Foundation non-profit organisation, has announcedthe first round of “connected” projects powered by Firefox OS that cover “a wide range of potential solutions.” These programs are called Project Link, Project Sensor Web, Project Smart Home, and voice assistant Project Vaani.

Mozilla announced last year that it will be discontinuing Firefox OS for smartphones. Reaffirming its stance last month, however, it also noted that it will instead focus on connected devices and how theseminiature gadgets could leverage on its technologies.

Project Link is a “personal user agent” that recognises your preferences and how you interact with devices in your home. The gadget will “automate” one’s connected world. With Project Sensor Web, Mozilla is trying to make it easier for contributors to find open data in sensors. The open data will supposedly enable a detailed understanding of living environments.

Project Smart Home aims to provide a middle ground between the framework that facilitates communication between connected devices, and DIV solutions such as Raspberry Pi. “Combining modular, affordable hardware with easy-to-use rules, Smart Home empowers people to solve unique everyday problems in new and creative ways,” the company wrote in a blog post.

Project Vaani is perhaps the most interesting among the four. It’s an “IoT enabler package” that allows developers to bake in a voice interface to their devices in a flexible and customisable way.

To recall, a leaked document late last year suggested that Mozilla was working on bringing Firefox OS to a Firefox Pad tablet, a keyboard computer Firefox Pi, Firefox Hub, and Firefox Stick. The company at the time told us that these four products were just concepts by one of its developers.

OS X Ransomware Caught Before Large Number of PCs Infected: Transmission

OS X Ransomware Caught Before Large Number of PCs Infected: Transmission

The first known ransomware attack on Apple’s Mac computers, which was discovered over the weekend, was downloaded more than 6,000 times before the threat was contained, according to a developer whose product was tainted with the malicious software.

Hackers infected Macs with the “KeRanger” ransomware through a tainted copy of Transmission, a popular programme for transferring data through the BitTorrent peer-to-peer file sharing network.

So-called ransomware is a type of malicious software that restricts access to a computer system in some way and demands the user pay a ransom to the malware operators to remove the restriction.

KeRanger, which locks data on Macs so users cannot access it, was downloaded about 6,500 times before Apple and developers were able to thwart the threat, said John Clay, a representative for the open-source Transmission project.

That is small compared to the number of ransomware attacks on computers running Microsoft Corp’s Windows operating system. Cyber-security firm Symantec Corp observed some 8.8 million attacks in 2014 alone.

Still, cyber-security experts said they expect to see more attacks on Macs as the KeRanger hackers and other groups look for new ways to infect Mac computers.

“It’s a small number but these things always start small and ramp up huge,” said Fidelis Cybersecurity threat systems manager John Bambenek. “There’s a lot of Mac users out there and a lot of money to be made.”

Symantec, which sells anti-virus software for Macs, warned on its blog that “Mac users should not be complacent.” The post offered tips on protecting against ransomware.

The Transmission project provided few details about how the attack was launched.

“The normal disk image (was) replaced by the compromised one” after the project’s main server was hacked, said Clay.

He added that “security on the server has since been increased” and that the group was in “frequent contact” with Apple as well as Palo Alto Networks, which discovered the ransomware on Friday and immediately notified Apple and Transmission.

An Apple representative said the company quickly took steps over the weekend to prevent further infections by revoking a digital certificate that enabled the rogue software to install on Macs.

Transmission responded by removing the malicious 2.90 version of its software from its website. On Sunday, it released version 2.92, which its website says automatically removes the ransomware from infected Macs.

Forbes earlier reported on the number of KeRanger downloads, citing Clay.

Diablo II Patch Brings OS X, Native Windows 10 Support

Diablo II Patch Brings OS X, Native Windows 10 Support

Blizzard has released an update for its 16-year-old popular hack and slash role-playing game Diablo II to fix compatibility issues with modern operating systems.

(Also see: Overwatch Release Date Revealed)

This is the first update in over five years, and is aimed at providing users of Windows 7 and beyond with a smoother experience, and allow people running OS X 10.10 or 10.11 to play the game. Previously, anyone on Windows 7, 8.1 or 10 had to run the game on XP compatibility mode while Mac owners lost support after Apple switched to Intel processors.

“It’s been a long time coming, but today we’re releasing 1.14a for Diablo II,” the company said in a statement. “This update focuses on system glitches introduced by modern operating systems. In related news, you can finally retire those old Mac PowerPCs. Included with the update is a shiny new installer for OSX.”

“We’ve also begun working to improve our cheat-detection and hack-prevention capabilities. There’s still work to be done, but we’re making improvements every day.”

“There is still a large Diablo II community around the world, and we thank you for continuing to play and slay with us. This journey starts by making Diablo II run on modern platforms, but it does not end there.”

The game went offline at 2pm Pacific Time on Thursday (Friday morning 3:30am IST) and the servers were back up running six hours later. There seems to be have been problems with the Mac installerthough, so you’ll have to wait a bit longer if you were hoping to get the game running on OS X 10.10 / 10.11. Do note that the game does not support OS X 10.9 or earlier.
