Facebook’s Aquila Internet-delivery Drone Could Add Billions More Online Customers

Facebook’s Aquila Drone Could Add Billions More Online Customers

Social networking giant Facebook (NASDAQ: FB) last week reported the first successful full-scale test flight of its ambitious Aquila solar-powered high-altitude unmanned aircraft. It’s part of an ambitious goal to bring four billion more  people online — more customers, freelancers and maybe even partners for your business.

“After two years of engineering, I’m proud to announce the successful first flight of Aquila — the solar-powered plane we designed to beam internet to remote parts of the world,” wrote Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg in a post on Thursday.

The maiden flight took place before dawn in Yuma, Arizona, on June 28.

Aquila Drone Beams High Speed Internet from the Sky

Facebook’s original mission was to fly Aquila for 30 minutes, but everything went so well that the company decided to keep the plane up for nearly 96 minutes.

It was a significant milestone and step forward in Facebook’s quest to use drones to beam high speed internet from the sky to the nearly four billion people (60 percent of the global population) without internet access, 1.6 billion of whom live in remote locations with no access to mobile broadband networks.

“Over the next year we’re going to keep testing Aquila — flying higher and longer, and adding more planes and payloads. It’s all part of our mission to connect the world and help more of the four billion people who are not online access all the opportunities of the internet,” Zuckerberg said.

“When complete, Aquila will be able to circle a region up to 96 km in diameter, beaming connectivity down from an altitude of more than 60,000 feet using laser communications and millimeter wave systems,” added Jay Parikh, Global Head of Engineering and Infrastructure at Facebook.

“Our goal is to have a fleet of Aquilas flying together at 60,000 feet, communicating with each other with lasers and staying aloft for months at a time — something that’s never been done before,” continued Zuckerberg.

4 Billion More People Could Soon Come Online

It’s worth reiterating that Zuckerberg and his company’s Connectivity Lab, the group working on the state-of-the-art internet-delivery drone, intend to bring four billion more people online via the Aquila project. That’s four billion more potential online customers, freelancers and maybe even partners!

The opportunities of the internet are endless, especially with more people online. From expanding the customer base for online businesses to enabling creation of new services and new revenue streams on top of traditional ones and increasing global visibility for brands, an increasingly connected world cod be good for many.

It’s not surprising, therefore, that Google (NASDAQ: GOOG), another internet giant and major Facebook rival, is also working on a similar project, pushing its Project Loon, which would use high-altitude balloons to distribute connectivity and bring people in remote parts of the world online. Elon Musk’s SpaceX, too, aspires to use satellites to cover the globe with internet connectivity.

Of course, both Facebook and Google have plans of their own on how they would tap this new pool of internet users. Their business models depend on overseas growth and they are determined to reach every single person on the planet. But, savvy entrepreneurs and small businesses also stand to benefit if the high speed internet connectivity projects are successful in bringing more people online.

Moreover, the race to bring affordable internet to hundreds of millions of people in more sparsely populated and hard-to-reach stretches of the globe could also usher in an important new era of rigorous experimentation and innovation not just from technology giants like Facebook and Google, but also from enterprising start-ups touting the next big thing.

60 Percent of Online Traffic Now Comes From Mobile

using smartphone

If your business depends upon online traffic, you should know. More than half of digital traffic online now comes from mobile devices and through mobile apps.

A comScore report says smartphones and tablets combined now account for 6o percent of all online traffic up from 50 percent a year ago. And 51 percent of that traffic is driven by mobile apps (like those for digital radio such as Pandora or Spotify, digital messaging like WhatsApp or Viber and social apps like Facebook and Twitter.)

Significantly, this is a very different measure than the amount of organic traffic driven by mobile, as cited in another recent report from SEO platform BrightEdge.

That study suggested that about 23 percent of organic traffic to websites now originates from Android or iPhone devices while 12 percent comes from tablets. But this report looked only at traffic originating from mobile search, in other words, someone looking for something using a search engine like Google or Bing via their phone or tablet.

The comScore report examines a much broader cross section of online traffic. It could just as easily be looking at visitors delivered to your website via a link on a Facebook app as from a mobile search for your business on a search engine.

One conclusion is that, while categories like digital radio and photo sites like Instagram and Flickr may draw more activity, for marketers (and small businesses) social media is most important.

In it’s official report, comScore explains:

“While social networking does not rank at the very top of this list among the most mobile-skewing content categories, it is arguably the most important. The #1 category in terms of overall digital engagement accounting for 20% of total digital time spent, social networking now generates more than 70% of its activity on mobile. When considering the category’s contribution to total digital ad spending, its rapid shift to mobile marks an important sign of the times for the Internet economy.”

The report adds that:

  • Mobile activity on social media has grown by 55 percent over the past year.
  • It has also accounted for 31 percent of all growth in Internet activity over the same period.
  • Facebook alone accounts for 24 percent of all mobile activity online and its primary app is responsible for 18 percent.

The report should give you a whole new perspective on the importance of social media marketing for your business, especially on sites like Facebook.

Is Minimalist Web Design Poised to Rule the Online Future?

minimalist web design

You are trying hard. You have created a website. You are posting contents on a regular basis. But that’s only a small part.

You’re also creating marketing content. Posting it on different blogs. You’re posting on different social media platforms as well. Yet somehow, you feel you’re not getting returns. And you’re frustrated, because you just can’t find a way out. So, what’s going wrong? Are you focusing enough on your website’s design?

As a business, you need to have an online presence these days. You need great content. But that’s not all. Would you read a book if the words were not printed properly and the design was clumsy? Probably not. Similarly, your target audience will not spend time on your website, even if you have a great content, if the design is not attractive. It will only increase your bounce rate and it won’t help one bit with profit.

So, What is it That You Need?

The answer is simple – attractive web design. But the question remains: Which of the latest website trends is the best for your site?

Gone are the days of complicated designs with a wide array of colors and shades, different fonts, etc. Your idea needs to be clear on what the essentials are. Minimalist web design has been around for quite some time now and remains as relevant as ever before.

Minimalist Web Design: The Basics

What is minimalist web design? The answer is in the name itself. If you’re looking for a minimalist design for your website, exclude everything that seems extraneous.

This might seem an easy task to perform, but in reality, it is one of the toughest things to do. So, what are the features that make minimalist web design so effective?

Follow the Minimalist Philosophy

Omit needless things – this is probably the heart of the minimalist philosophy. Keep features that are necessary and delete many of the others. This ensures that readers will be able to focus more on the primary elements in your website, without being distracted by unnecessary ones.

Light Design Loads Faster

Minimalist web designs have only necessary components. This ensures that the design is light. And a light design means it takes less time to load, which is a great way to ensure that readers remain longer. It helps reduce the bounce rate of your website significantly, which in turn, reflects positively.

User-Friendliness to Increase Website Footfalls

Does it feel easy to surf through a website that’s complicated? Probably not. The same is true with your target audience as well. They will always flock to websites that are easy to navigate.

Usability plays a major role in ensuring that a website is user friendly. This user-friendliness also plays a major role from an SEO perspective, thus increasing the number of footfalls to the website. Minimalism can be a great step forward toward SEO friendly web design.

Attention Remains Focused on the Content

Content is king. No matter what type of website you’re building, content is sure to play an important role. However, it’s hard for readers to concentrate on your content if your design distracts them. This is where minimalist web design comes in handy. It ensures that their complete focus is on your content.

Minimalist web design enhances chances of conversion and is also extremely user friendly. It can attract maximum visitors and help you garner maximum profit.
