Steam Black Friday 2016 Sale: GTA V, Skyrim, and More PC Game Deals

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Steam Black Friday sale ends on November 29
  • Games on discount include indie classics like Undertale
  • There is one discounted price per game for the duration of the sale

(Also see:  The Steam Black Friday Sale Is Here and This Time It’s Different)

Best Steam Black Friday deals

  • GTA V: this open-world crime classic is now Rs.1,468, a whole 50 percent cheaper than what it normally costs, making it well worth buying.
  • Undertale: last year’s indie darling is a steal at Rs. 184, half price from what it is usually. A great game that runs on almost any PC configuration.
  • Quantum Break: this one time Xbox One and Windows 10 PC exclusive is now on Steam with some interesting optimisations for PCs to boot. Well worth the Rs. 636 price of entry.
  • Batman: Arkham Knight: although your mileage in terms of performance will vary, Rocksteady’s last open-world adventure starring the caped crusader demands consideration at Rs.949.
  • The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim: perhaps not as souped up as the recently released Skyrim Special Edition, it has the flexibility of extended mod support. After all, at Rs. 186 you’d be foolish not to check it out.

While these deals are great, Steam may not be the cheapest option. This holds true for games from publishers like Electronic Arts and Ubisoft who have their own digital distribution services. Also, if you can’t pick up anything during the current sale, don’t worry. There will be a Winter sale as well which should take place from December 22 to January 1.

Handmade at Amazon Expands Categories to Include Accessories, Toys, Games, More

Amazon.com announced recently that Handmade at Amazon, its new store for handmade items, has added three new product categories of handmade items. The site sells products crafted and sold directly by artisans in competition with well-known handmade platform Etsy. The new Handmade at Amazon categories are Accessories, Baby and Toys and Games.

News that Handmade at Amazon has expanded categories of handcrafted items should be exciting for the artisans and customers choosing to use the service. That’s because the expansion will introduce thousands more Prime – eligible items, giving customers a fuller experience. It will also provide artisans a richer storefront for handcrafted items where they can showcase their work and make more sales.

The ecommerce company said the new categories of handcrafted items will offer more than 20,000 items sold directly from artisans. It adds that since the beginning of the year, there’s been a 100 percent increase in handmade artisans taking advantage of its service to deliver items quickly to customers.

New Handmade at Amazon Categories

Handmade business owners will now be able to offer everything from accessories like Italian leather handbags and plaid zipper clutches to baby-themed items like teething rings and toys & games products like wooden memory games and felt tool set toys with this expansion.

One doesn’t need stats and figures to see that Amazon Handmade is growing fast and making an impact. The new Handmade at Amazon categories of handcrafted items add to the previously featured Kitchen and Dining, Stationery and Party Supplies, Jewelry, Artwork, Bedding, Home Décor and Furniture categories launched last fall.

Amazon said in the press release that since launching the Handmade e-store last fall, the number of items listed has grown four times to more than 400,000 quality handcrafted items from all 50 states and more than 80 countries around the world.

Social media sites like Facebook also have many satisfied artisans and customers sharing photos of handmade items they either purchased or crafted. They are satisfied because handmade provides a unique feel that someone crafted the item, poured their hearts and soul into it, and the piece stands out.

Impact of Amazon Handmade on Etsy and Similar Sites

When Amazon first announced the opening of a handmade storefront on its giant ecommerce platform, many wondered what it would mean for those who shop and sell on Etsy and similar sites. Would Amazon Handmade be the end of sites like Etsy, the hitherto vibrant peer-to-peer niche ecommerce site focused on handmade or vintage items and supplies?

Amazon Handmade promised to facilitate seamless sales of authentic handmade items and has already made many of the items eligible for Prime, Amazon’s special two day free shipping service. However, it remains a bit hazy whether Amazon Handmade’s terms of service and listings are better than Etsy’s.

According to Investopedia, Etsy has a wildly low fee structure, charging only a 3.5 percent commission and a flat $0.20 listing fee. Comparatively, Amazon charges about a 15 percent commission on most products in its marketplace, although it brings this percentage slightly lower for its Handmade service in order to appeal to small businesses in the artisan space. Still, undercutting Etsy would be difficult.

It’s still too early to tell what the long-term impact the new Handmade at Amazon categories will have on Etsy, but many handmade business owners are welcoming the opportunity to sell their wares on Amazon in addition to Etsy. Amazon is certainly much, much bigger and the additional exposure for artisan items is good.

Facebook’s Aquila Internet-delivery Drone Could Add Billions More Online Customers

Facebook’s Aquila Drone Could Add Billions More Online Customers

Social networking giant Facebook (NASDAQ: FB) last week reported the first successful full-scale test flight of its ambitious Aquila solar-powered high-altitude unmanned aircraft. It’s part of an ambitious goal to bring four billion more  people online — more customers, freelancers and maybe even partners for your business.

“After two years of engineering, I’m proud to announce the successful first flight of Aquila — the solar-powered plane we designed to beam internet to remote parts of the world,” wrote Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg in a post on Thursday.

The maiden flight took place before dawn in Yuma, Arizona, on June 28.

Aquila Drone Beams High Speed Internet from the Sky

Facebook’s original mission was to fly Aquila for 30 minutes, but everything went so well that the company decided to keep the plane up for nearly 96 minutes.

It was a significant milestone and step forward in Facebook’s quest to use drones to beam high speed internet from the sky to the nearly four billion people (60 percent of the global population) without internet access, 1.6 billion of whom live in remote locations with no access to mobile broadband networks.

“Over the next year we’re going to keep testing Aquila — flying higher and longer, and adding more planes and payloads. It’s all part of our mission to connect the world and help more of the four billion people who are not online access all the opportunities of the internet,” Zuckerberg said.

“When complete, Aquila will be able to circle a region up to 96 km in diameter, beaming connectivity down from an altitude of more than 60,000 feet using laser communications and millimeter wave systems,” added Jay Parikh, Global Head of Engineering and Infrastructure at Facebook.

“Our goal is to have a fleet of Aquilas flying together at 60,000 feet, communicating with each other with lasers and staying aloft for months at a time — something that’s never been done before,” continued Zuckerberg.

4 Billion More People Could Soon Come Online

It’s worth reiterating that Zuckerberg and his company’s Connectivity Lab, the group working on the state-of-the-art internet-delivery drone, intend to bring four billion more people online via the Aquila project. That’s four billion more potential online customers, freelancers and maybe even partners!

The opportunities of the internet are endless, especially with more people online. From expanding the customer base for online businesses to enabling creation of new services and new revenue streams on top of traditional ones and increasing global visibility for brands, an increasingly connected world cod be good for many.

It’s not surprising, therefore, that Google (NASDAQ: GOOG), another internet giant and major Facebook rival, is also working on a similar project, pushing its Project Loon, which would use high-altitude balloons to distribute connectivity and bring people in remote parts of the world online. Elon Musk’s SpaceX, too, aspires to use satellites to cover the globe with internet connectivity.

Of course, both Facebook and Google have plans of their own on how they would tap this new pool of internet users. Their business models depend on overseas growth and they are determined to reach every single person on the planet. But, savvy entrepreneurs and small businesses also stand to benefit if the high speed internet connectivity projects are successful in bringing more people online.

Moreover, the race to bring affordable internet to hundreds of millions of people in more sparsely populated and hard-to-reach stretches of the globe could also usher in an important new era of rigorous experimentation and innovation not just from technology giants like Facebook and Google, but also from enterprising start-ups touting the next big thing.

New Business Ideas: More Than Shoes

FiveFingersIt’s hard to imagine entrepreneurs achieving mass market success with shoes. After all, shoes are everyday items and not very exciting as the latest gadgets.

Despite this, entrepreneurs around the world have come up with winning shoes ideas that have captured the attention of today’s consumers. You’ve probably seen countless people wearing the colorful Crocs shoes in your city. Here are more interesting footwear ideas to pique your curiosity.

  • Designed for physical exercise, the Kangoo Jumps rebound exercise shoesare loaded with springs so that you can jump higher than on your own two feet. You need not worry about adverse side-effects as the shoes reduce impact by 80% so they’re really easy on your joints, hips and spine.
  • The FiveFingers shoes (pictured above) target outdoor sports fans who prefer to go barefoot during their activities. These glove-like shoes permit you to safely enjoy your various physical activities such as running while retaining the sensation and effectiveness of being barefoot.
  • Get rid of smelly feet with Italy’s Geox shoes, created by Italian entrepreneur Mario Polegato. Fitted with a patented membrane, these Geox shoes are designed to leave toes cool and eliminate the bad smell because the soles are specially made to allow feet to “breathe” elegantly.
  • Walkers are standing up and taking note of Masai Barefoot Technology (MBT) trainers. Based on the erect barefoot stride of Africa’s Masai tribe, the chunky-soled shoes create a rocking motion that improves posture and balance. Professional sportsmen apparently use MBT trainers to speed up regeneration, optimise their running style, and for speed and power training.

Have you seen any creative and innovative footwear ideas lately in your country?

Ringly Raises $5.1 Million to Create More Gadget Jewelry

012615 ringly

With ideas like the Smarty Ring winning support in crowdfunding campaigns, the market for mart jewelry has already been established.

But a company called Ringly, also known for a ring that lights up to signal incoming notifications, plans to push that market to the next level.

Now, after a successful $5.1 million round of Series A funding, Ringly is ready to develop even more wearables beyond its current offerings.

The influx of investment at Ringly comes primarily from Andreessen Horowitz, according to the company.

Other new investors in the company include High Line Venture Partners, Silas Capital, PCH, and more.

Ringly also received follow-on investments from First Round Capital, Mesa+, Social+Capital, and Brooklyn Bridge Ventures.

Since releasing its first wearable products, Ringly has grown from a group of three co-founders to a company of 12 people, its blog notes.

On the official Ringly blog, founder and CEO Christina Mercando writes:

“I didn’t set out to start a wearable technology company. In fact, when I first had the idea for Ringly, the term ‘wearables’ hadn’t even hit mainstream. I was simply tired of worrying where my phone was — at dinner, meetings, parties, drives, picnics, hikes, everywhere — for fear I’d miss something important.”

Ringly launched with a line of four wearable rings. These rings look the equivalent of some vintage costume jewelry. They have a simple setting with an 18k gold finish and a rather large stone, either a precious or semi-precious gem.

Remember, Ringly founder Mercando said that the company was founded with a fashion-first initiative.

In her blog post, Mercando adds:

“I’m not against the term wearables; it’s an important, growing category and perhaps that is where we fit in the world of tech. But we’re also a piece of jewelry that stands on its own?—it’s a mistake to only think of Ringly as a wearable.”

There’s a discreet light on the side of the ring that notifies users of incoming calls, texts, or any other types of alerts. A mobile app that corresponds with the Ringly ring can be set to alert users for any type of notification.

Ringly can also send a slight vibration to the finger that’s wearing the device when a notification has arrived.

The initial line of four rings was followed by a limited edition ring, too. All five are in the same style. All the rings are meant to be worn by women.

With the infusion of capital, Ringly hopes to expand its line to include more wearable devices.

In her post, Mercando mentions “a shirt that tracks your heart rate while you’re at the gym” and “a bathing suit that monitors sun exposure at the beach.” But she gave no further specifics about what products the company might unveil next.

Though she did hint on a next phase of growth for the company and suggested the next step in the industry would involve diversification of offerings.

TechCrunch reports Ringly may have set its sites on a diversified selection of rings, and perhaps bracelets next.

8 Innovative Devices, Gadgets and More for Small Business

When you’re on the road, whether locally or internationally, sometimes you just need that little device, gadget or thingamajig to make your work life easier.  These tools are not just for road warriors, but for anyone who appreciates elegant lifehacks.

Here are eight of my favorites:

Breffo spiders are absolutely amazing. Simple, but super cool. You can mold one into a stand for your iPad, iPod, Droid, mobile phone or whatever else it can wrap itself around. My only advice: Do not play around and set one up to look like a giant spider to scare your friend on a dark night. It will scare them, and you won’t like the outcome (nor will your friend).

LoJack for Laptops.  When my laptop was stolen a few years back, how I wished for LoJack-type technology to get the data back–never mind the laptop. Now it’s here. Instead of a silly cable lock that can be easily snipped, load the LoJack software if you are wandering around anywhere where your machine is out of sight.

Skype Mobile has saved my neck a bunch of times. Last year, Skype sent me a DroidX to test and play with, and having VOIP on a mobile phone simply rocks. When I’m close to my call minute maximum or I just feel like making a free call, the Skype Mobile app via the Verizon cell network cannot be beat. You can IM, call Skype-to-Skype and make international calls at Skype rates (not higher cell phone rates).

iTwin looks like a USB-drive, but it is really a device to set the world free from cables. You plug one half into your computer and the other half into any other computer and you can access your files from your home network or the Internet. Pretty sweet.

ioSafe Rugged Portable Hard Drive just commands respect. Rodney Dangerfield could have gotten respect if he had one of these. You can bake ’em, submerge ’em, drive over them with your Ford F150 pickup truck and still get the data out. We gave a couple away after testing them last year. I used a nonportable one as a boat anchor, an anvil, a meat tenderizer (don’t ask), and a spoof on Will-It-Blend where I crushed a blender. Plus, you can bolt them to the floor and make them hard to steal. But the little portable hard drives from ioSafe are amazing and sleek.

iGo provides a variety of eco-friendly chargers and battery boosts. This iGo device has to be one of my favorites for mobile devices (not laptops). You plug it in and charge it up, then if you’re not near an outlet it will continue to run your device on its internal battery. Hat tip to Matt Kostanecki of Archon Systems.

If you need a portable hard drive with above-average security, check out ROCBIT FXKT.  This device has one of the most secure encryption modes available and is both bus-powered and bootable with key-token technology. What does that really mean? The hardware itself is doing the encryption, which makes it more effective and less “hackable.”

The last item I want to share is a neat little compound called Sugru invented by Jane ni Dhulchaointigh. Sugru is like modeling clay, but made from silicone. Once it’s exposed to air, it cures to a tough, flexible silicone overnight.

sugru

It is designed to stick to as many other materials as possible. It forms a strong bond to aluminum, steel, ceramics, glass and other materials including plastics. A friend of mine used it to pad the corners of his new iPhone. Another made a thin power cord adapter more “grippy.”  Trust me and check out the Sugru site for more ideas.

What are your favorite gadgets and devices to enhance your productivity, protect your devices, or just plain help you in your work?
