Dell, Lenovo, HP to Launch 'Affordable' VR Headsets Alongside Windows 10 Creators Update

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Headsets to come with support for ‘Creators Update’
  • Company showcased its Holographic UI during its Surface event
  • Update to roll out in early 2017

Microsoft showcased its Holographic UI in its full glory during its Surface event on Wednesday and from the looks of it, the company might have given us a glimpse of our ‘mixed reality’ computing future. The demonstrations given by the company were quite impressive but more importantly, the Redmond-based company announced that it has partnered with companies like Dell, Lenovo, Acer, Asus and HP to make affordable VR headsets that are capable of mixed reality and will launch alongside the Windows 10 Creators Update in Spring 2017.

The Redmond giant says the new VR headsets will have a starting price of around $300 (roughly Rs. 20,100). In a blog post, the company added, “And these accessories will be the first and only with inside-out, six-degrees of freedom. Unlike every other virtual reality headset in the market today, there will be zero need for a separate room and complicated setup.” The company says the headsets, apart from being affordable compared to the $500 headsets in the market today, will be designed to work with affordable laptops and PCs.

In order to produce content for these VR headsets, Microsoft announced the Windows 10 Creators Update, which will include a 3D framework designed around Microsoft’s HoloLens and other VR experiences. The Creators Update will allow developers to create content for VR with ease, and will be available in early 2017.The company also showcased its Microsoft new, revamped Paint 3D app, which was leaked recently. The revamped app includes tools for importing and handling 3D artwork, as well as integration with a new online community–Remix3D that allows users to share their creations or search other people’s creations. As reported by us earlier, the community is integrated with the massive 3D Warehouse, a repository for Trimble’s popular SketchUp software, and already contains millions of 3D objects.

Holographic UI was first unveiled by Microsoft last year in January and was presented as a device that allows users to enter a virtual world, through a headgear, and interact with the virtual objects present in it.

Fujitsu Says It Is in PC Merger Talks With Lenovo

Fujitsu Says It Is in PC Merger Talks With LenovoJapan’s Fujitsu said on Thursday it was in talks to merge its struggling PC business with Chinese computer giant Lenovo, sending its shares soaring as the company also announced a recovery in profits.

The talks come as Japanese personal computer makers work to scale back their businesses as consumers shift to smartphones and tablets.

Tokyo-based Fujitsu said it and Lenovo, the world’s largest PC maker, are “exploring a strategic cooperation in the realm of research, development, design and manufacturing of personal computers for the global market”.

The two firms, which are yet to reach an agreement, are also talking with government-backed Development Bank of Japan for financial and strategic support.

Fujitsu shares rose by 7.8 percent on news of the merger negotiations to close at JPY 599.3.

In a separate announcement, the company said its net profit for the six months to September came to JPY 11.8 billion ($113 million or roughly Rs. 755 crores).

The recovery marks a reversal from a net loss of JPY 15.9 billion during the same period last year, thanks to cost-cutting efforts particularly in the PC and mobile phone operations.Operating profit stood at JPY 25.9 billion, up from an operating loss of JPY 12.4 billion the year before, while sales fell 7.0 percent to JPY 2.08 trillion (roughly Rs. 1,32,869 crores).

Fujitsu also slightly revised down its annual sales forecast to JPY 4.5 trillion, JPY 100 billion lower than an earlier forecast due to revised exchange rate assumptions, but kept annual net profit projection at 85 billion yen.

What LeEco, Lenovo and OnePlus are offering this Diwali

Lenovo Z2 Plus. Photo: Ramesh Pathania/Mint

Chinese phone makers are turning the heat on their Indian and South Korean counterparts by offering heavy discounts, attractive trade-offs and a chance to win a free smartphone through online contests. Here are the top deals offered by LeEco, Lenovo and OnePlus on their online stores or on Amazon.in and Flipkart.com.

LeEco Le Max 2

LeEco Le Max 2LeEco

Chinese phone maker LeEco which has been creating quite a buzz in the Indian market with just three phones under the belt is offering a major price cut on its mid-range phone the LeMax 2.

The Le Max 2 is a big screen phone that poses serious competition to the high flagships as well as the mid range smartphones. It is selling at Rs.17,999, down from Rs.22,999. Its prime attraction is the 5.7-inch AMOLED display and the screen resolution of 2,560×1,440m, which is unheard of in a sub Rs.20,000 smartphone. This is a sharp and bright looking display and is ideal for movie buffs and fans of graphic intensive games. The audio output in the CDLA ready headphones that comes with the smartphone is one of the best we have heard in any smartphone so far. Powering the phone is Qualcomm’s 2.1GHz Snapdragon 820 quad-core processor which has been paired with 3GB RAM and 32GB of internal storage. The phone’s metallic finish gives it the aura of a premium flagship device. You can get this phone on Amazon.in or LeEco’s official online store.

OnePlus 3

OnePlus 3OnePlus

OnePlus is not offering any direct discount on its new phone. The OnePlus 3 is still selling at Rs. 27,999, but if you are willing to part away with your older phone, you may get a price reduction of up to Rs.16,000 on it, depending on the condition and the model of the phone that you are planning to give away.

The company is giving buyers a chance to get the gold variant of the OnePlus 3 for free under its Diwali Dash sale. It commences on 24 October on OnePlus’ official online store. You can get the details for the contest here .

There is a direct discount on the 64GB variant of the OnePlus 2, though.

Barring the heating issues that we noticed in some of its handsets, the phone is a pretty powerful big screen option for users who fancy the clean Oxygen OS more than the custom User interface based smartphones from Xiaomi or LeEco. It runs on Qualcomm’s 1.8GHz Snapdragon 810 octa-core processor with 4GB RAM. The phone is selling at Rs.19,999, down from Rs.22,999 on Amazon.in.

Lenovo

Lenovo is offering an attractive discount on its budget smartphone Zuk Z1. Earlier priced at Rs.13,499, right now you can get it for Rs.10,999. This is the most affordable Cyanogen phone the market right now. It runs Android 5.1 and offers plenty of cool customisations without feeling overwhelming as phones with custom UIs tend to get. It runs on Qualcomm’s 32-bit Snapdragon 801quad-core processor with 3GB RAM, has a 5.5-inch full HD display and offers 64GB of internal storage. The phone’s other talking point is its classy looks and the 4,100mAh battery that can clock a day and half of backup easily. You can get this device on Amazon.in.

The other phone in the Zuk series is the recently launched Z2 Plus. It doesn’t run the Cyanogen OS but retains the plain Android interface. Lenovo is offering exchange offers which can help you save up to Rs. 13,600. Again the amount of discount you get will depend on the handset you are putting up for exchange. Z2 Plus is a small screen phone with a display size of 5-inches. It is powered by Qualcomm’s 2.1GHz Snapdragon quad-core processor with 3GB RAM in the 32GB variant (Rs.17,999) and 4GB RAM in the 64GB variant ( Rs.19,999). The phone is available on Amazon.in.

Lenovo Plans to Manufacture Laptops in India

Lenovo Plans to Manufacture Laptops in India

Chinese electronics goods maker Lenovo Monday said it considers India as a potential centre for manufacturing laptops.

“At Pondicherry plant, where we are already manufacturing desktops, has the capacity and flexibility to manufacture laptops (notebooks). The company will have to take a call when to do it,” Dinesh Nair, director, consumer business,Lenovo India said.

He said that Lenovo, which already started manufacturing at its Chennai plant, is committed to the ‘Make in India’ initiative, which is evident from the visit of the company’s CEO and Chairman Yang Yuanqing in 2015 for a meeting with the Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Lenovo, which is already the third largest vendor of PCs in India in terms of market share, has redesigned its entire range of portfolio targeting the youth and the business segments and keeping the price at competitive levels, he told reporters in Kolkata on Monday.

Nair said that manufacturing laptops in India would give more flexibility as at least two months were needed to ship products from China.

Currently, the entire range of laptops are being shipped from China, he said.

In terms of revenue contribution, the laptops segment was contributing to 85 percent to 88 percent of overall PC sales, the rest being desktops, Nair said.

On market growth of PCs, he said that it remained flat in the last quarter.

Lenovo, Fujitsu Said to Discuss Merger of PC Businesses

Lenovo, Fujitsu Said to Discuss Merger of PC BusinessesLenovo, Fujitsu Said to Discuss Merger of PC Businesses
HIGHLIGHTS
The companies are aiming to reach agreement this month: Nikkei
Lenovo is also seeking to make further inroads into smartphones
Fujitsu would move its PC planning, development, manufacturing divisions
Lenovo Group Ltd. is in talks with Fujitsu Ltd. to merge their personal-computer businesses, with the Chinese manufacturer taking a majority stake in the venture, a person with knowledge of the matter said.

The two sides are still discussing pricing and terms, said the person, who asked not to be identified because the talks are private. The companies are aiming to reach agreement this month, according to the Nikkei newspaper, which reported the deal earlier Thursday.

An alliance with Fujitsu would give Lenovo, the world’s biggest PC maker, a bigger foundation to expand its share. Lenovo had 19.4 percent of the global PC market in 2015, compared with 2.1 percent for Fujitsu, according to IDC. Lenovo is also seeking to make further inroads into smartphones, while embarking on a plan to cut $1.35 billion from annual costs and eliminate 3,200 jobs. The company said in August that it was making progress and would turn around its business next year.

Fujitsu shares rose about 7 percent to JPY 575.7 as of 10:45am in Tokyo, after climbing as much as 8.6 percent. The stock had declined 11 percent this year through Wednesday. Lenovo’s shares climbed as much as 2.7 percent in Hong Kong, but remain down more than 30 percent in 2016.
Japan’s PC makers have been scaling back their operations or exiting the business entirely, as more people use mobile devices to check e-mail, manage their finances and access the web. Fujitsu had been struggling to find a partner, and talks with Vaio and Toshiba Corp. were on the verge of collapse, the Wall Street Journal reported in April.

The Nikkei reported that the Lenovo-Fujitsu business may merge in the future with Lenovo’s PC venture with NEC Corp., which was formed in 2011. Fujitsu would move its PC planning, development, manufacturing divisions to Lenovo as part of the deal, the Nikkei said, with about 2,000 Fujitsu workers likely to be relocated to Lenovo.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 vs Moto G4 Plus vs Lenovo Zuk Z1: Which is the Best?

Xiaomi_Redmi_Note3_Zuk_z1_Moto_G4_Plus_camera_ndtv.jpg

HIGHLIGHTS
The Redmi Notice 3 excels in the performance and display branch.
The Zuk Z1 trumps the others with a higher digicam and battery existence.
You’ll in most cases emerge as with the Moto as the others may be long past in a flash.
Selecting a telephone in the under Rs. 15,000 fee section is like identifying what to devour in a foodcourtroom. There’s tons of options to pick out from, every providing better fee for cash than the opposite and on the identical time, you want to ensure you keep away from the ones that could looktop at the beginning but then make you suffer later.

Out of the sheer quantity of telephones which have been introduced within the past couple of monthson this section, three have clearly left a long-lasting impression on us. We’re of route talking about the Xiaomi Redmi Observe three (Overview), Moto G4 Plus (Evaluate) and the newly launched Lenovo Zuk Z1 (Assessment).

To be sincere, you cannot move wrong with any of them, however which one is the pleasant? We attemptto answer that very conundrum.

(Also see: Specs contrast – Xiaomi Redmi Be aware 3 vs Moto G4 Plus vs Lenovo Zuk Z1)

Design
Design is some thing it is very subjective and differs wildly but after using all 3 smartphones we’d have togo together with the Moto G4 Plus. It is the lightest and the slimmest the various 3 and plenty simpler to grip because of the rubber back. Motorola hasn’t compromised on the construct even though as it Alsohas a metal frame for pressure. the opposite two Additionally look precise and have metal builds butthey are not the maximum ergonomic when as compared to the Moto.

Winner – Moto G4 Plus

display
The excellent of the display is one of the vital elements as it‘s your simplest approach of interacting with your smartphone. All three telephones have 5.5-inch complete-HD presentations with scratch protection, which manage to provide sharp visuals. But, Xiaomi’s Daylight display hardware characteristic nudges itbeyond the opposite . The brightness ranges aren’t super at the Z1 although it does function a polarising coating to atone for that. The Moto G4 Plus is available in a close 2d despite having a everydayTFT display rather than IPS.

Winner – Xiaomi Redmi Observe three

Xiaomi_Redmi_Note3_Zuk_z1_Moto_G4_Plus_side_ndtv.Jpg
Software program
All 3 telephones excel within the Software branch with each Xiaomi and the Lenovo Zuk bringing specificversions of Android, so Selecting one relies upon on the form of consumer you’re. In case you want apure Nexus-like revel in, then the Moto G4 Plus is 7c5d89b5be9179482b8568d00a9357b2. With the mostcontemporary model of Android and just the bare crucial apps present, It is left up to the user to down load and customize what apps they need for unique obligations.

However, In case you‘re the kind of character who wants the customize each unmarried component at the phone, from the subject to the coloration of the notification LED, you then must be searching at Zuk Z1 which runs on Cyanogen OS (v12.1 on the time of this text). Xiaomi’s MIUI 7 Also gives lots of customisation, although in all likelihood not as full-size as Cyanogen. But, it does have one very usefulfunction which the others lack and that’s the capability to lock apps in your fingerprint, so handiestyou’ve got get right of entry to to them.

Winner – depends on your taste

overall performance
looking merely on the numbers, the Redmi Observe three is an easy winner. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 650 hexa-center SoC offers stellar performance over the growing older Snapdragon 801 inside the Z1 and the mid-variety Snapdragon 617 in the Moto G4 Plus. All three phones have 3GB RAM (despite the fact that you can get the 2GB versions of the Redmi Word three and G4 Plus for a chunk much less) andenormous onboard storage. Remember the fact that the Z1 compensates for the dearth of a microSD card slot with 64GB of storage. The Redmi Word 3 has a hybrid SIM slot however the legitimate expandablegarage aid is just 32GB. The Moto G However has a dedicated slot with an legit score of 128GB.

All 3 phones will easily cope with traumatic apps and video games, although we did word the Motoreceives warm as an alternative speedy while as compared to the alternative . Considering the overall performance of the interface, apps, fingerprint senor and connectivity functions, the Redmi Note 3 is theclean winner, accompanied carefully via the Zuk Z1.

Winner – Xiaomi Redmi Note 3

Battery lifestyles
All 3 telephones have full-size batteries so one can remaining you above a day of normal use. However, the Zuk Z1 outlasts the other with the aid of extra than an hour in our video loop check. Do maintain in thethoughts that despite the fact that the Z1 doesn’t aid fast charging, it does ship with a high abilitycharger for charging it fast. It’s simply that it may not charge as fast as the Redmi Word 3 or the Moto G4 Plus while beginning from 0.

Winner – Lenovo Zuk Z1

Xiaomi_Redmi_Note3_Zuk_z1_Moto_G4_Plus_camera_ndtv.Jpg
digital camera
The digital camera is some other integral thing in modern-day smartphone and all over again, It’s the Zuk Z1 that has the nice digital camera out of the three. Focusing speeds are brief and we managed to gettrue information in landscapes and macros. Plus, this is the first cellphone on this charge variety with optical image stabilisation (OIS). Low-light overall performance is commendable too, that is some thingthe Moto G4 Plus and Redmi Note three struggle with. The digital camera app is also the satisfactorysome of the 3 as it‘s easy to use for beginners and gives finer controls for extra expert users.

Winner – Lenovo Zuk Z1

Verdict
Like we referred to in advance, all 3 are superb smartphones in their own proper, so Selecting one willcompletely depend upon in which your priorities lie. Going through our individual scoring, It’s a tieamong the Zuk Z1 and the Redmi Notice 3. In case you‘re looking often at a great digicam and batterylifestyles, then the Lenovo Zuk Z1 is your satisfactory guess. It fares properly inside the otherdepartments as nicely however excels in these two unique ones. The Redmi Word 3 trumps the others in terms of show excellent and performance, no longer to mention the highest spec’d model continues to be inexpensive than the alternative .

However, do not discount the Moto G4 Plus just yet as despite the others having the top hand inmaximum departments, the Moto G4 Plus is the smartphone you will most likely turn out to be buying. Why? Simply because the Redmi Note three and Zuk Z1 will be almost impossible to get due to the ridiculous flash sale model. If lady luck is on your aspect then super, else There is usually Moto to fallback on.
