HIGHLIGHTS

  • Headsets to come with support for ‘Creators Update’
  • Company showcased its Holographic UI during its Surface event
  • Update to roll out in early 2017

Microsoft showcased its Holographic UI in its full glory during its Surface event on Wednesday and from the looks of it, the company might have given us a glimpse of our ‘mixed reality’ computing future. The demonstrations given by the company were quite impressive but more importantly, the Redmond-based company announced that it has partnered with companies like Dell, Lenovo, Acer, Asus and HP to make affordable VR headsets that are capable of mixed reality and will launch alongside the Windows 10 Creators Update in Spring 2017.

The Redmond giant says the new VR headsets will have a starting price of around $300 (roughly Rs. 20,100). In a blog post, the company added, “And these accessories will be the first and only with inside-out, six-degrees of freedom. Unlike every other virtual reality headset in the market today, there will be zero need for a separate room and complicated setup.” The company says the headsets, apart from being affordable compared to the $500 headsets in the market today, will be designed to work with affordable laptops and PCs.

In order to produce content for these VR headsets, Microsoft announced the Windows 10 Creators Update, which will include a 3D framework designed around Microsoft’s HoloLens and other VR experiences. The Creators Update will allow developers to create content for VR with ease, and will be available in early 2017.The company also showcased its Microsoft new, revamped Paint 3D app, which was leaked recently. The revamped app includes tools for importing and handling 3D artwork, as well as integration with a new online community–Remix3D that allows users to share their creations or search other people’s creations. As reported by us earlier, the community is integrated with the massive 3D Warehouse, a repository for Trimble’s popular SketchUp software, and already contains millions of 3D objects.

Holographic UI was first unveiled by Microsoft last year in January and was presented as a device that allows users to enter a virtual world, through a headgear, and interact with the virtual objects present in it.

GoDaddy Says Its Latest Feature Will Make it Much Easier to Launch Your WordPress Site

The new GoDaddy WordPress Website wizard will enable small businesses to build their own WordPress website more easily then before.

WordPress is used by 26.9 percent of all the websites in the world, and GoDaddy (NYSE:GDDY) just announced a new service called WordPress Website that will make launching more of those websites on WordPress even easier.

The New GoDaddy WordPress Website Wizard

GoDaddy said this will be the easiest way for small businesses to build their own WordPress website. And according to the company, the new exclusive WordPress Quick Start Wizard is what is going to make it possible.

With so many websites being created using the WordPress content management system (CMS) every day, GoDaddy has made an effort to make the integration even easier.  That’s not surprising considering more than 50 percent of the platform’s hosting customers use WordPress.  GoDaddy’s newest feature began with the acquisition of ManageWP, a WordPress site management tool, last month. The combined technologies has made the company a single destination for WordPress site creation, management and hosting.

The WordPress Quick Start Wizard builds on GoDaddy’s existing solution for this CMS so small business owners can create professional websites. It includes free high-quality images for every industry imaginable, professionally built premium themes and a Visual Page Editor for easy drag and drop customization.

Everything your small business needs is readily available to quickly create a blog, photo gallery, contact form or other integrations with the most popular social media sites, the company says. During the tool’s beta release, the average time to publish a site was reduced by 73 percent. And if that wasn’t impressive enough, the number of customers that successfully published a site increased three fold.

Other features include an email signup form integrated with GoDaddy Email Marketing, an SEO Wizard and more.

The WordPress Websites is available now with three different tiers, starting at $7.99 per month for Basic, $9.99 per month for Business, and $14.99 per month for Ultimate.

Xiaomi Mi Note 2 With Bezel-Less Display Likely to Launch on October 25
HIGHLIGHTS
The Xiaomi Mi Note 2 is likely to launch on October 25
Leak suggests an edge-to-edge display
The smartphone was previously tipped to sport 6GB of RAM
Xiaomi has scheduled an event in China on October 25, where it is expected to announce the Mi Note 2 smartphone. The company is finally unveiling the smartphone after many leaks and speculations about the launch. Additionally, the latest leak hints that the Mi Note 2 will have an all top display, with no sensors or front camera on top, giving it a very different look from the current models in the market, but no dual-edge display as rumoured earlier.

Xiaomi is hosting an event in China at the Peking University Gymnasium on October 25, where it is likely to launch the Mi Note successor. Xiaomi has also announced that Hong Kong-based actor Tony Leung will be the host for the event.

Separately, a few photos of the Xiaomi Mi Note 2 have been leaked on Weibo, which show that the Xiaomi Mi Note 2 will have very thin bezel on all four sides. The bottom chin usually used for navigation buttons, and the top part used for front camera as well as sensors is not seen in these images, and the Mi Note 2 instead sports an edge-to-edge display. The images also show the smartphone running MIUI OS, adding more credibility.
This images contradict previous leaks that speculated the Mi Note 2 will come with a dual-edge display. However, the leaked images only show the smartphone from the front, hence the dual camera setup rumour leaked recently could still be true.

The Mi Note 2 was expected to arrive on several occasions throughout the latter part of the year, the latest one being September 14, but the launch hasn’t happened yet. We were about to give up hope, when CEO Lei Jun himself reignited launch expectations by saying that the Mi Note 2 will “have a surprise” whenever it launches. However, Xiaomi is now finally looking to put all rumours to rest on October 25.

As mentioned, the Mi Note 2 has been leaked on several occasions revealing key specifications. The smartphone is said to be powered by a Snapdragon 821 SoC, and pack a 3600mAh battery. It’s anticipated to sport two speaker grilles at the bottom, and have a fingerprint sensor at the front. Lastly, the Mi Note 2 is expected to come in 6GB RAM/ 64GB storage and 6GB RAM/ 128GB storage bundles and be priced at CNY 2,499 (roughly Rs. 25,000) and CNY 2,799 (roughly Rs. 28,000) respectively.

“For those who are looking forward to its launch, we would like to thank everyone for their patience and continued support. We are beyond excited to deliver to them the amazing experience that PS VR offers. The launch date will be confirmed in due course of time,” the statement continued.

“Our aim with IGX is to bring as many of these varied experiences as possible under one roof, and with PlayStation VR, we can offer our visitors a jaw-dropping virtual reality experience,” said IGX’s organiser Sameer Desai.

While neither Sony nor IGX has mentioned what you can play on the PS VR at the expo, it is safe to say the contents of the device’s demo disc would be one of the many experiences on display.

And if VR isn’t up your alley, other games will be present at the event as well. These include WWE 2K17, Mafia 3, NBA 2K17, Pro Evolution Soccer 2017, Rise of the Tomb Raider for PS4, FIFA 17, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, and No Man’s Sky.

Further shoring up the list are a host of locally developed games such as Asura. a Diablo-styled game from Hyderabad-based Ogre Head Studios, Zenith, a role-playing co-developed by Bengaluru’s Holy Cow Productions, and Dodgefall, a racing game from Roosh Interactive, a studio based in Mumbai.

This year’s edition of IGX will take place at the World Trade Centre in Mumbai from October 15 to 16.

The first year of IGX was an honest representation of the consumer gaming scene in the country, unlike India’s many Comic Con events, which have over the years devolved into a crowded bunch of known stores selling merchandise and little else. How it evolves in its second year will be interesting to see.
