Adobe Cloud on Microsoft Azure

Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen emphasized the importance of having a strong cloud infrastructure, noting that Adobe processes 23 trillion transactions each quarter, or over 90 trillion per year.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said  in a statement, “Together, Adobe and Microsoft are bringing the most advanced marketing capabilities on the most powerful and intelligent cloud to help companies digitally transform and engage customers in new ways.”

Both companies have made the cloud a central part of their strategies. Under Nadella’s leadership, Microsoft has placed heavy bets on Azure and is investing significantly in all of Microsoft’s cloud offerings including its Office 365 software-as-a-service application.

Adobe moved its business to a cloud model a couple of years ago, and the move is paying off.  Adobe’s most recent financial results show strong performance.

Adobe also will get access to Microsoft’s AI/machine learning service Cortana Intelligence Suite — giving customers access to more intelligence.

For small businesses that use the Adobe Cloud products, in the near term as Adobe transitions to Azure it means a strong cloud infrastructure to rely on.  Some Adobe services have been running on Amazon’s AWS, but it’s not clear if under the new arrangement Microsoft will become Adobe’s exclusive cloud infrastructure provider.

Microsoft Ignite is Microsoft’s conference for technology professionals and executives. The conference sold out weeks ago with over 23,000 people registered to attend.  The conference is also being simulcast live from the event website at ignite.microsoft.com.

Cyber-Security Firm FireEye Announces Layoffs

Cyber-Security Firm FireEye Announces Layoffs

Cyber security firm FireEye Inc said on Thursday it planned to lay off 300 to 400 of its 3,400 workers as it announced quarterly sales below its own forecast, due to a slowdown in demand for its services helping businesses respond to hacking attacks.

FireEye’s shares were down 16.2 percent at $14.02 in extended trading.

The Milpitas, California-based company also cut its full-year sales outlook.

Chief Financial Officer Michael Berry told Reuters that the job cuts were part of a restructuring effort that will reduce annual costs by about $80 million (roughly Rs. 534 crores).

Chief Executive Kevin Mandia said the company is now responding more frequently to financially driven cyber criminals, who engage in crimes such as ransomware, which are relatively simple to clean up.

“The size and scope have changed. The whole remediation was more complex” when the company was responding to large numbers of state-sponsored hacks from China, he said.

FireEye cut its full-year revenue forecast to $716 million-$728 million (roughly Rs. 4,783 crores – Rs. 4,864 crores) from $780 million-$810 million (roughly Rs. 5,211 crores – Rs. 5,412 crores).

The company is still targeting non-GAAP profitability by the end of 2017 and expect to generate positive free-cash flow in 2017, Berry said on a conference call.

It reported second-quarter revenue of $175 million (roughly Rs. 1,169 crores) , missing its own projection of $178 million to $185 million (roughly Rs. 1,189 crores to Rs. 1,236 crores).

Executives blamed much of the trouble on a slowdown in its services business, including its high-profile Mandiant forensics unit that helps organizations respond to cyber-attacks.

That division’s revenue rose just 2 percent in the second quarter, compared to a 40 percent increase in the first quarter. Its total number of engagements rose, but average revenue from each one fell dramatically because work performed was less extensive.

Mandia said that was due to a shift away from previous years where there were large numbers of state-sponsored espionage hackers from China attacking customers in the United States.

FireEye and other cyber-security firms said in June that cyber-espionage attacks from China appeared to have dropped this year as the Chinese government made good on a pledge with the United States to stop supporting the digital theft of US trade secrets.

The company reported lower-than-expected billings, a closely watched indicator of future business.

FireEye posted second-quarter billings of 196.4 million, below its forecast of $200 million to $215 million.

It also cut its full-year billings forecast to a range of $835 million to $855 million, from its previous range of $975 million to $1.055 billion.

In contrast, peer Symantec Corp reported second-quarter revenue and adjusted profit above the average analyst estimates, helped by strong enterprise demand for its security products.

Up to Thursday’s close, FireEye shares had fallen more than 62 percent in the last 12 months.

Blizzard Announces Big Hearthstone Expansion – Whispers of the Old Gods

Blizzard Announces Big Hearthstone Expansion - Whispers of the Old Gods

Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft has been growing in size since its release two years ago, and Blizzard announced a third expansion for the free-to-play collectible card game on Friday night. Titled ‘Whispers of the Old Gods’, it adds 134 new cards to the game.

(Also see: Hearthstone Introduces New Game Formats and More Deck Slots)

Alongside that, you will also be able to get your hands on four “Legendary Old Gods” cards featuring C’Thun, Yogg-Saron, Y’Shaarj, and N’Zoth. Yep, those really are their names.

“It is said that for millennia uncounted the massive Old Gods lay dreaming in ageless sleep deep beneath the surface of Azeroth,” Blizzard elaborated in a blog post. “Maybe noisy taverns full of laughter, shouts of triumph, and clanking tankards are like a snooze alarm you can’t turn off, and this whole Old-Gods-waking-up thing is entirely our fault.”

You can now pre-order a 50-pack bundle of randomly-generated Whispers of the Old Gods cards for $49.99 (approx. Rs. 3,300) before the bundle releases next month. And should you choose to do so, you will be rewarded with a new card back for your loyalty to Blizzard.

The company said to expect the release of the new expansion across all platforms – Windows, OS X, iOS, and Android – starting end of next month and latest by early May.

You will be able to put down gold you earn in-game (or real money if you please) to get the new card packs contained within the expansion. Blizzard is trying to involve the community further by doing a further reveal of the cards coming with Whispers of the Old Gods next Monday. If you want to know more, head to the official website for the expansion to learn more then.

Build 2016: Microsoft Announces New Free Development Tools

Build 2016: Microsoft Announces New Free Development Tools

Technology giant Microsoft has unveiled new free development tools for its developers including those in India to help them easily build apps and reach the largest possible number of customers.

On the second day of its annual developers’ conference ‘Build 2016’ in San Fransisco, Microsoftannounced the new free development tools which include new cloud services, developer tools and productivity extensions, to help every developer more easily scale their apps for every platform and reach the largest possible number of customers.

“Microsoft is the only cloud vendor that supports the diverse needs of every organisation and developer from core infrastructure services to platform services and tools to software-as-a-service for any language, across any platform,” Microsoft’s Executive Vice President of the Cloud and Enterprise Group Scott Guthrie said.

(Also see:  Build 2016: Microsoft Unveils Desktop App Converter, Xbox Dev Mode, and More)

India’s developer community of over a million is among the largest in the world for Microsoft.

“With 30 regions worldwide, more than every major cloud provider combined, Azure’s massive scale means developers and businesses alike can focus on creating the next generation of amazing applications, not their underlying cloud infrastructure. This makes our cloud the de facto choice for enterprises of today and tomorrow,” Guthrie said.

(Also see:  Microsoft Announces Windows 10 Anniversary Update at Build 2016)

Guthrie along with Executive Vice President of the Applications and Services Group Qi Lu demonstrated how Microsoft Azure services and the Office platform can empower developers to more easily leverage advanced analytics, machine learning, emerging cloud development models and the Internet of Things to build their intelligent apps.

“With new extensions and new connections to the Microsoft Graph, an intelligent fabric that applies machine learning to map the connections between people, content and interactions across Office 365, developers are empowered to build intelligent apps that can transform the landscape of work,” Lu said.

(Also see:  Microsoft Says Windows Phone Isn’t Its Focus This Year)

Guthrie said that Microsoft is helping developers more easily build native cross-platform mobile applications by including software company Xamarin’s capabilities.

The company also announced a commitment to open source the Xamarin SDK, including its runtime, libraries and command line tools, as part of the NET Foundation in the coming months.

Guthrie announced several new services on the cloud computing platform Azure designed to help developers address operational realities and take advantage of upcoming emerging trends, such as the Internet of Things and microservices.

Lu highlighted how conversational interaction will evolve in the future and developers can immediately start building apps that engage users in meaningful conversations.

Xiaomi Announces ‘Mi Ecosystem’ Sub-Brand

Xiaomi Announces 'Mi Ecosystem' Sub-Brand

At an event in China, Xiaomi on Tuesday announced a new sub-brand called Mi Ecosystem. The new brand is meant to cover products manufactured by Xiaomi’s ecosystem partners.

As per Xiaomi, the Mi Ecosystem sub-brand will adhere to the “philosophy of making products that stand out as works of art in daily lives.” It adds that its ecosystem partners are chosen because they adhere to the “high-quality” required to be aligned with Xiaomi.

Xiaomi said that to build the Mi Ecosystem, it has thus far invested in 55 companies that design and manufacture products beyond the company’s own three core product categories: smartphones, smart TVs, and smart routers. It added that 29 of these companies have in fact been incubated by Xiaomi since their founding, including Zhimi (responsible for the Mi Air Purifier) and Viomi (responsible for the Mi Water Purifier). The company added that so far, 28 Mi Ecosystem companies have won international design awards, while 20 companies have launched products. The companies have also become “industry benchmarks” in their own right, with spectacular sales figures for such startups – no doubt helped by the Xiaomi brand. It said that seven Mi Ecosystem companies already have annual sales of over $100 million, while two have reached annual sales of over $1 billion.

Xiaomi in a statement added that its Founder and CEO, Lei Jun, started exploring the ecosystem business model two years ago with the aim to “promote an upgrade in Chinese manufacturing with a new concept of ‘Made in China’ products.” The statement adds, “Rather than simply being a venture company, Xiaomi imparts to these companies its approach to making quality products, sharing its methodologies and existing resources, including supply chain, e-commerce, marketing, and branding.”

xiaomi_mi_induction_heating_pressure_rice_cooker_in_story.jpgThe first product under the Mi Ecosystem brand is the Mi Induction Heating Pressure Rice Cooker (seen above). Priced at CNY 999 (roughly Rs. 10,200), the rice cooker is supposedly 40 percent cheaper than its Japanese counterparts, the company says. It will go on sale in China via Mi.com during the Mi Fan Festival beginning April 6.

As you’d expect from Xiaomi, the Mi Induction Heating Pressure Rice Cooker is an Internet-connected device, and not just a ‘dumb’ pressure cooker. The Wi-Fi-enabled cooker can be controlled via the Mi Home app. Xiaomi says users can scan a packet of rice to identify the type of rice, brand, and origin, and depending on these factors, the rice cooker will adjust its heating to best suit the rice type. The company says it currently supports more than 200 brands of rice, a list that will be expanded in the future. The Mi Home app also provides recipes for dishes that can be made with Mi Induction Heating Pressure Rice Cooker, including cakes, and users simply have to select the recipe in the app for the cooker to adjust itself.

What began as a software company five years ago, Xiaomi has grown to become a major manufacturer of smartphones, tablets, as well as TVs. The company now sells products such as suitcases, air purifiers,LED lights, routers, set-top boxes, and even lamps under its brand. The vast majority of these products, however, don’t leave China’s boundaries. In recent years, Xiaomi has been working with different governments such as India, Singapore and their regulations to launch more of its products, while also working on its debut in the United States and United Kingdom markets.
