March 8 is International Women’s Day – a time to celebrate the accomplishment of women and highlight the need for gender equality.
The holiday traces it roots back to 1908, when more than 15,000 women marched in New York demanding better pay, improved working conditions and voting rights. The first “National Woman’s Day” was held Feb. 29, 1909 in New York City, with the international celebration starting in 1910 in Copenhagen, Denmark. The United Nations first celebrated the holiday in 1975, which was also designated as International Women’s Year.
